LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Sorghum unveiled a new interactive delivery map during its annual Field Day on Monday, providing farmers with an easy way to locate buyers, elevators and processors accepting&nbsp;<a href="https://www.morningagclips.com/tag/sorghum/">sorghum</a>&nbsp;across the state. In today’s challenging economic times, farmers need reliable tools to make informed marketing decisions.

This interactive map offers a clear and user-friendly way to view delivery points and access relevant information and addresses. It will be updated as new delivery points become available, and farmers who know of additional locations can easily share them through the website’s “Submit a Location” feature.

“As a sorghum grower, I know how important it is to have reliable market information,” said&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Grain Sorghum Board Vice Chair Tyler Bose, a farmer from Arcadia, Neb. “This map puts delivery options at our fingertips and makes it easier for farmers across the state to connect with buyers and plan their marketing more effectively.”

Nebraska&nbsp;Sorghum Executive Director Kristine Dvoracek-Jameson emphasized the checkoff’s commitment to supporting growers statewide. “Our mission is to expand opportunities for sorghum producers, and this delivery map is one more way we’re helping. By providing a central, easy-to-use tool, we’re making it simpler for growers to find purchasers and make informed decisions for their operations.”

National Farm Safety and Health Week is September 21-27

LINCOLN, Neb. – As harvest season approaches, the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Board (NCB) and&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) are reminding farmers, rural communities and motorists to prioritize safety during National Farm Safety and Health Week, September 21-27. This year’s theme,&nbsp;“Safety First, Avoid the Worst,”&nbsp;highlights the importance of taking proactive steps to prevent accidents during one of the busiest and most dangerous times of the year in agriculture.

Agriculture remains the backbone of&nbsp;Nebraska’s economy, with one in four jobs tied to the industry. But farming continues to rank among the most hazardous occupations in the United States. Fatigue, stress, heavy equipment and unpredictable conditions all contribute to the risks faced by farmers and rural residents alike.

“Harvest is a season that brings families together across generations, but it also requires us to be more vigilant than ever,” said Brandon Hunnicutt, chairman of NCB. “Taking a few extra moments for safety, whether in the field, on rural roads or around equipment, can save lives and help us avoid the worst.”

Nebraska&nbsp;Corn encourages both farmers and the public to keep these safety reminders top of mind this fall and beyond:

Nebraska&nbsp;Corn also reminds those traveling through rural areas to be patient during harvest traffic and be aware of&nbsp;Nebraska’s updated move-over law. The updated measure requires drivers to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles and vulnerable road users which now includes agricultural vehicles and equipment. Slowing down and staying alert can prevent accidents and help avoid the worst.

The&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Board is funded through a producer checkoff investment of a one-cent-per-bushel on all corn marketed in the state and is managed by nine farmer directors. The mission of the&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Corn Board is to increase the value and sustainability of&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;corn through promotion, market development and research.

Nebraska Corn: Safety First, Avoid the Worst

As we move into fall, many producers may be looking at harvesting forage from summer annuals like sorghum-sudan or other large-stemmed crops. While these can provide a valuable feed source, making dry hay this time of year comes with some real challenges.

Cooler days and nights, heavy dew sets, and fewer daylight hours all slow the drying process. Add in thick stems and reduced sunlight intensity, and getting hay down to a safe storage moisture becomes difficult. Pushing hay harvest late into the season without good drying weather can increase the risk of mold, heating, or even spontaneous combustion in the stack.

If dry hay is still the goal, there are a few steps to improve curing. Mechanical conditioning, like crimping stems, can speed drying. Spreading hay into wide windrows helps capture more sunlight and airflow. And leaving a taller stubble gives the windrow space off the soil surface, reducing moisture wicking from the ground and allowing better air movement underneath.

Even with these adjustments, weather windows can still be tight. Alternatives such as silage or baleage may be a better fit when moisture is high and stems are slow to cure. Stockpiling growth for grazing later in the fall is another option that reduces harvest risk and provides valuable feed, though quality may drop as plants mature.

As you plan fall forage harvest, weigh the risks of slow drydown against the flexibility and feed quality benefits of ensiling or wrapping, or even stockpiling. A little planning now can help protect both forage quality and safety.

Irrigating alfalfa now through November until the soil freezes can protect plants and improve fall yields. However, adjust irrigation rates compared to in-season watering. During the hot growing season, alfalfa water usage may exceed 0.30 inch per day versus fall cooler days water usage dropping to 0.10 inch per day. As a perennial plant, alfalfa growth extends longer into the fall and does not have specific critical growth stages for water stress like most traditional annual crops. So, when moisture stressed, the plant will slow growth; go dormant; and then resume growth once conditions become favorable again. Generally, maximum alfalfa forage growth requires 5 to 6 inches of water per cutting.

The main advantage of fall irrigation is lower evaporation compared to summer; thus, improving irrigation efficiency. Further, most irrigated alfalfa fields never get much water stored below 4 feet depth although alfalfa plants can grow roots down 8 feet or more. Since roots will not grow through dry soil to reach wet soil, deep soil water storage reserves may be lacking if field soil wetting does not leach below 4 feet.

To reduce field compaction, pause irrigating 2-3 days before cutting the alfalfa; and irrigate again when alfalfa regrowth begins. Irrigation scheduling efficiency can be improved by using ET (evaporation &amp; transpiration) measurement gages or soil moisture monitoring.

Review your local NRD irrigation district water usage restrictions; since potential total supplemental water applications per year may have limits, and alfalfa usage could exceed irrigation allocations. Conversely, building deep stored water reserves in the fall can help your alfalfa next summer during rapid growth when it may be difficult to keep up with peak plant water usage demands.

Finally, some fields have lower water infiltration rates, so irrigating now through November may be the right time for building water reserves. For example, in five-cutting irrigated system, research has shown that the next spring first cutting yield will be lowered by approximately the same amount as the yield from a late-fall last cutting.

During dry weather, cutting schedules can be pushed back or more forage may be needed. In these cases, what may be the risk if these producers seek yet another cutting during this growing season?

If the first fall frost occurs earlier than normal, then winter injury is a risk. However, conditions vary from year to year; and plant winterizing generally begins about three weeks before the first frost date with the “ideal” being six weeks of uninterrupted growth in the fall to become well winterized.

Winter survival of later cuttings will improve with younger stands (except new stands); winterhardy varieties and disease-resistant varieties. For those needing extra cash or forage this fall, the higher dairy quality forage values may off-set the financial risk of needing to re-establish alfalfa stands next year which winterkill.

LINCOLN, Neb. (Aug. 25, 2025) — Gov. Jim Pillen has appointed Lisa Lunz of Wakefield as the new District 4 director of the Nebraska Corn Board, succeeding Debbie Borg, who chose not to seek reappointment after serving since 2013.

Lunz, a fourth-generation farmer, has 37 years of experience raising corn and soybeans with her husband, Jim. She holds a degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and has served as a Dixon County supervisor and on the Nebraska Soybean Board.

“Lisa will be a valuable addition to our organization,” Nebraska Corn Board Chairman Brandon Hunnicutt said in a statement. “With her extensive farming experience and leadership background, we’re looking forward to her insights and contributions as we work together to promote the interests of Nebraska’s corn growers.”

Along with Lunz’s appointment, Pillen reappointed Dan Nerud of Crete and Adam Grabenstein of Farnam as directors for districts 1 and 5.

At its Aug. 19 meeting, the board also elected its 2025–26 officers: Hunnicutt of Giltner as chair, Andy Groskopf of Scottsbluff as vice chair, and Ted Schrock of Elm Creek as secretary/treasurer. Jay Reiners of Juniata will continue to serve as past chairman.

“The leadership elected take on great responsibility, representing all 36,000 corn farmers in the state,” Executive Director Kelly Brunkhorst said. “Their continuity and experience will serve us well as we continue to promote Nebraska’s corn industry and drive initiatives that benefit producers.”

Wakefield farmer appointed to Nebraska Corn Board

BASSETT, Neb. — Two Nebraska sale barns etched their names in the history books Wednesday with record-breaking feeder cattle prices that sent shockwaves through the national livestock market.

At Bassett Livestock Auction, the northern Nebraska barn posted the five highest 10-weight steer prices ever recorded in the United States, highlighted by 159 head at 1,038 pounds selling for $318.25 per hundredweight. The barn also shattered the all-time national record for 9-weight steers, selling 180 head at 936 pounds for $336.75/cwt.

The historic July 23 sale pushed all five top spots for 10-weight steers (1,000–1,099 lbs) onto Bassett’s ledger. Prices for those five lots ranged from $315.75 to $318.25 per hundredweight, a strong signal of continued demand for heavyweight feeder cattle amid tight supplies and elevated corn prices.

Meanwhile, Albion Livestock Market, located in east-central Nebraska, notched major milestones of its own Wednesday. The barn recorded the second- and third-highest 8-weight steer sales in U.S. history. A draft of 65 head at 828 pounds sold for $344.50/cwt, while 43 head at 864 pounds brought $343.50/cwt.

Albion also set its personal best for 7-weights, selling 12 head at 700 pounds for $355.00/cwt—one of the top prices nationally in that weight class so far this year.

Wednesday’s sales come at a time when feeder cattle prices are surging amid lower national herd numbers and strong feedlot interest. Analysts say the records reflect both market volatility and the premium paid for high-quality, reputation cattle.

“These kinds of sales don’t just happen,” said one market observer. “They’re a combination of excellent genetics, precise management, and a red-hot market willing to pay for performance.”

The back-to-back record days at Bassett and Albion are expected to influence pricing dynamics across the Midwest heading into late summer.

Nebraska Sale Barns Set National Records with Sky-High Feeder Cattle Prices

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 95.2 million acres of corn planted in the United States for 2025, up 5% from last year, according to the Acreage report released today. Soybean area planted is estimated at 83.4 million acres, down 4% from last year.

Following up on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2025/03-31-2025.php">Prospective Plantings</a>&nbsp;report released in March, NASS surveyed approximately 67,700 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information on what farmers actually planted. Key findings released in the Acreage report include:

 </figure>By&nbsp;—USDA NASSWASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimated 95.2 million acres of corn planted in the United States for 2025, up 5% from last year, according to the Acreage report released today. Soybean area planted is estimated at 83.4 million acres, down 4% from last year.Following up on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nass.usda.gov/Newsroom/2025/03-31-2025.php">Prospective Plantings</a>&nbsp;report released in March, NASS surveyed approximately 67,700 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information on what farmers actually planted. Key findings released in the Acreage report include:Corn<ul>
 <li>Growers expect to harvest 86.8 million acres of corn for grain, up 5% from 2024.</li><li>Ninety-four percent of all corn acres planted in the United States are biotech varieties, the same as 2024.</li>
 </ul>Soybeans<ul>
 <li><a href="https://www.morningagclips.com/tag/soybeans/">Soybean</a>&nbsp;harvested area for 2025 is estimated at 82.5 million acres, down 4% from last year.</li><li>Producers planted 96% of the soybean acreage using herbicide resistant seed varieties, the same as 2024.</li>
 </ul>Cotton<ul>
 <li>All cotton planted area for 2025 is estimated at 10.1 million acres, 10% below 2024.</li><li>Upland cotton planted is estimated at 9.95 million acres, down 9% from last year.</li><li>American Pima planted area is estimated at 171,000 acres, down 17% from 2024.</li><li>Ninety-seven percent of Upland cotton planted acres are biotech varieties, up 1% from last year.</li>
 </ul>Wheat<ul>
 <li>All wheat planted area for 2025 is estimated at 45.5 million acres, down 1% from last year.</li><li>Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 33.3 million acres, down less than 1% from 2024.</li><li>Other spring wheat planted area is estimated at 10.0 million acres, down 5% from 2024.</li><li>Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 2.11 million acres, up 2% from last year.</li>
 </ul>NASS also released the quarterly Grain Stocks and Rice Stocks reports to provide estimates of on-farm and off-farm stocks as of June 1. Key findings in those reports include:Grain Stocks<ul>
 <li>Corn stocks totaled 4.64 billion bushels, down 7% from the same time last year.</li><li>On-farm corn stocks were down 16% from a year ago, and off-farm stocks were up 6%.</li><li>Soybeans stored totaled 1.01 billion bushels, up 4% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm soybean stocks were down 12% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were up 18%.</li><li>All wheat stored totaled 851 million bushels, up 22% from a year ago.</li><li>On-farm all wheat stocks were up 32% from last year, while off-farm stocks were up 20%.</li><li>Durum wheat stored totaled 27.9 million bushels, up 32% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 41% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>Off-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 25% from a year earlier.</li>
 </ul>Grain Stocks<ul>
 <li>Rough rice stocks totaled 69.7 million hundredweight, up 15% from June 1, 2024.</li><li>On-farm rice stocks were up 94% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were up 7%.</li><li>Long grain rice varieties accounted for 69% of the total rough rice, medium grain accounted for 30%, and short grain varieties accounted for 1%.</li><li>Milled rice stocks totaled 6.09 million hundredweight, up 26% from a year ago.</li><li>Milled rice stocks were comprised of 4.01 million hundredweight of whole kernel rice and 2.08 million hundredweight of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.</li>

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Corn Growers Association (NeCGA) is excited to announce the establishment of the Panhandle Corn Growers Association, representing corn growers in Banner, Box Butte, Garden, Morrill, Scotts Bluff and Sioux counties. The announcement follows the acceptance of a formal request to the NeCGA Board of Directors during its board meeting on June 17th in Broken Bow.

Andy Groskopf, president of the newly founded local association, presented the letter and officially requested affiliate status. Groskopf said the Panhandle Corn Growers Association aims to unify corn growers in western Nebraska under the shared belief of advancing the corn industry through leadership, advocacy, policy development and education.

Warnar Schaneman has been selected to serve as the Panhandle representative on the NeCGA state board. In this role, Schaneman will help ensure the voice and interests of Panhandle growers are represented at the state level.

“The formation of the Panhandle Corn Growers Association is a major milestone in the continued growth of the Nebraska Corn Growers Association,” said Michael Dibbern, president of NeCGA. “Our mission has always been to serve grassroots corn farmers across the entire state, and the need for local representation in western Nebraska has never been greater. We’re excited to welcome these growers and look forward to the leadership and perspective they’ll bring to the Association.”

In alignment with NeCGA’s mission, the Panhandle Corn Growers Association is committed to hosting annual promotional and educational events and actively participating in statewide activities. WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) recently mailed the July cattle survey to about 18,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of U.S. cattle inventories. This is the first July cattle survey mailed to producers since the reinstatement of key reports was announced earlier this year.

“This information helps producers make timely, informed business decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “It also helps packers and government leaders evaluate expected slaughter volume for future months and determine potential supplies for export. Obtaining the current count of cattle will serve as an important decision-making tool for the entire agriculture industry.”

During the first two weeks of July, U.S. cattle producers will have the opportunity to report their beef and dairy cattle inventories, calf crop, death loss and cattle on feed information. To make it as easy as possible for producers to participate in the survey, NASS offers the option of responding via the website&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/">agcounts.usda.gov</a>, telephone, mail or a personal interview with a local NASS representative.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 23, 2025) — Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith said making key tax relief provisions permanent and curbing federal spending are top priorities as lawmakers debate what President Donald Trump has dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Speaking to the North Platte Post over the weekend, Smith, who represents Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, said the sweeping economic package — formally known as the reconciliation bill — is critical for the country’s financial future.

“If we don't get our work done on this bill, that means a roughly $1,500 tax increase for your average household, and more than $5,000 for your average farming operation,” Smith said, citing figures from the American Farm Bureau.

The reconciliation process, Smith explained, allows Congress to pass budget-related legislation with a simple majority in the Senate — avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold.

“The fact of the matter is, we've gotten the bill through the House already, which I think is good. We need to get our work done,” Smith said. “Some of these tax policies are currently on the books. We want to make that permanent. We certainly don’t want taxes to go up.”

Smith pointed to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as a model of pro-growth policy that boosted wages and encouraged investment across agriculture, manufacturing, and other sectors.

“Sometimes you listen to folks in Washington and they demonize prosperity so much, you'd never realize that actually our tax code depends very heavily on prosperity,” he said. “Even with the tax cut, businesses paid more in taxes because they were making more money — and that’s a good thing.”

Smith, who was in North Platte for a series of local meetings and events, emphasized that he considers Nebraska’s agricultural economy to be on “the front lines” of the nation’s economic engine.

He also said trade policy remains a top issue, both for Nebraska producers and the Trump administration.

“Hopefully we’ll have some trade agreements come together very quickly,” Smith said. “And land the plane, so to speak, on trade policy so that we can really be poised well heading into next year.”

The Senate is expected to take up the reconciliation bill in the coming weeks.

NORTH PLATTE, Ne - When Tanner Drueke was a little boy, he rummaged through his dad's old rodeo gear bag, finding the remnants of Bart Drueke's bull riding career.

And that was just more fuel for the Sutherland man’s love of rodeo.

Now Drueke, age 21, is competing professionally in the PRCA and will ride at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte on June 20. He also competes in regional associations like the Nebraska State Rodeo Association (NSRA) and the Mid-States Rodeo Association (MSRA).

He rode bulls, like his dad, in high school, but he also rode bareback horses, and that’s where he found his niche.

In high school, Drueke qualified for the Nebraska State High School Finals three times, then went on to the National High School Finals Rodeo three times.

He attended Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., rodeoing collegiately, and graduating with an associate’s degree in electrical technology.

By the time Drueke was born to Bart and Crystal, his dad had pretty much quit rodeoing, but Tanner saw the memorabilia around the house, the mementos of his dad’s rodeo career, and he loved it.

“I saw all the stuff on the wall and thought I wanted to do it,” he said.

Now, he’s working for a rancher near Paxton and rodeoing professionally. His goal is to be among the top fifteen bareback riders in the Prairie Circuit (the pro rodeos in Nebraska Kansas and Oklahoma), and compete at the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kansas in November.

He’s sitting eighth in the Prairie Circuit right now, and has won a few checks, including a second place finish in Strong City Kan., a fourth place finish in Abbyville, Kan., and a third place in Springfield, Neb., enough to keep him on the rodeo road.

Another young bareback rider from Nebraska will compete in North Platte at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

Spencer DeNaeyer, Seneca, is friends and traveling partners with Drueke.

A 2022 Mullen High School graduate, he competed at the Neb. State High School Finals and at the National High School Finals Rodeo, finishing eleventh at Nationals his senior year.

DeNaeyer went to Odessa (Texas) College, earned a degree in ag business, and rodeoed for them.

Now he lives in Cheyenne, Wyo. with his fiancée Kaydence Bartlett. He broke his wrist during a ride at a rodeo in Montana last September and is just now back to riding. &nbsp;

The break, in the scaphoid bone of the wrist, is usually a “career-ender,” DeNaeyer said. It required surgery, but he’s back to competition. It hurts, but “not that bad,” he said. “Not enough to quit” rodeoing.

Like Drueke, DeNaeyer’s dad competed in rodeo, but as a saddle bronc rider. DeNaeyer rode bulls for a while and did some saddle bronc riding, but it was the bareback riding that he took to.

Getting on bulls is “pretty scary,” he said. “At least the bucking horse is trying to get away from me instead of chasing me and trying to kill me when I get off,” like a bull would, he joked.

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo attracts big-name talent, and that can be intimidating for young cowboys like Drueke and DeNaeyer, who are just getting started.

But it can also be incentive, DeNaeyer said. “It’s hard not to ‘fan-girl’ over the cowboys I’ve watched on TV since I was twelve,” he said. “But you have to snap out of it and say, I’m here to beat you now. I’m here to win. You’re not there to get autographs, you’re there to take money.”

This will be the third time for him to compete in North Platte. Two years ago, he won third place. &nbsp;

Over 450 cowboys and cowgirls will compete at this year’s Buffalo Bill Rodeo, in eight events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and bull riding.

Performances start at 7:30 pm June 18-21. Slack, the extra competition that doesn’t fit into the evening performances, is at 8 am on Jun 18-19.

Buffalo Bill Rodeo Set To Kick-Off Wednesday Night in North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (June 16, 2025) — As the 70th annual Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant unfolds this week in North Platte, three young women from across the state are competing for the prestigious title ahead of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo's opening night Wednesday.

Contestants Brylee Thompson of Hershey, Jessica Lange of Crofton, and Maycie Johnson of Oakdale are showcasing their horsemanship, public speaking, fashion, and rodeo knowledge as they vie for the honor of becoming Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026.

The competition began with horsemanship at the Wild West Arena and continued with impromptu interviews, a barbecue meet-and-greet, and formal speeches. Contestants will also be evaluated on their social media engagement, a modern element of the pageant that reflects the evolving role of rodeo queens as public ambassadors.

Thompson, who began competing in pageants at age 10, called it a “privilege” to be in the running for Nebraska’s top rodeo title. “You rarely bring your own horse to a rodeo as Miss Rodeo Nebraska,” she said. “It’s important to be able to ride different horses and navigate each arena confidently.”

Lange, representing northeast Nebraska, emphasized how social media has expanded the reach and impact of the role. “I don’t have a large cheering section here, but through social media, so many people back home can follow the pageant and support me,” she said.

Johnson, the third contestant, is newer to pageantry but comes from a background in barrel racing. “It’s about the bond between you and your horse,” she said. “That trust and communication is everything in barrel racing and something I’m excited to bring to this experience.”

This year’s style show, a fan-favorite event where contestants display Western fashion flair, will take place Tuesday night at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte — a new location for the occasion. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by a fundraising auction at 6:30 and the show at 7.

The pageant will culminate Wednesday with the coronation of Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2026, just before the start of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo at the Wild West Arena.

Organizers credit community support, longstanding sponsorships and a deep roster of volunteers for the rodeo’s continued success and national reputation. Fisher noted that North Platte’s pride in hosting the event fuels its growth and helps attract top-tier rodeo athletes.

“Guys that have been part of NebraskaLand Days for 40 years still want to see this grow,” he said. “It’s our chance to showcase North Platte and kick off the summer.”

This year’s rodeo will once again feature livestock from Beutler and Son, whose elite stock frequently appears at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR). Thompson emphasized the importance of quality animals to the rodeo’s success.

“These are true animal athletes,” he said. “They get better every year, just like the cowboys and cowgirls. Beutler and Son bring the kind of stock that contestants can win on.”

Ropin' The Rodeo - Buffalo Bill Rodeo Returns June 18 with Big Purse, Top Stock and Family-Friendly Fun

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - When Jim Gragg takes vacation, he goes to work, and loves every minute of it.

For the past fifty years, the Tryon, Neb. man has spent four days every June in North Platte, volunteering at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. And even though it’s work, he loves it.

Since 1974, Gragg has untied calves after every tie-down roping run at the rodeo.

He was a high school sophomore when he began helping, and he’s never missed a performance or Wednesday morning slack.

He drives from his ranch south of Tryon every day, instead of staying in North Platte. It’s easier that way, because he can take care of ranch chores on the place he and wife Judy own. He puts on about 600 miles in the four-day period.

After each tie-down roping run, he and another man run to the calf and take the rope off, handing it back to the roper. It’s not a hard job, but with about 140-150 ropers throughout the four days of rodeo, it requires the ability to make the repeated trip from the side of the arena, to the horse, roper and calf, and back again.

Last year, Gragg was given the Trail Boss Award, an annual award given to volunteers who exemplify dedication and going above and beyond the call of duty to support the rodeo or its auxiliary events.

Gragg didn’t know he was receiving the award last year till he heard his name called. It was a big surprise, he said. “I was headed to the catch pen, and I saw all these people I know,” he said. He was escorted to the middle of the arena, where he was presented with the award.

“I was shocked, I was just so shocked,” he said. “Coming home that night, we generally have the radio on, but I was so wound, I rattled all the way home.”

As soon as he got home, he hung the plaque. “I found a spot and hung it on the wall.”

Gragg, along with other volunteers, helps with the calves and steers, making sure they’re sorted in the correct pens. When Hadley Barrett was announcing the rodeo, he always opened a gate to the catch pen, so Hadley could ride his horse into it during the bull riding.

Gragg loves every part of the rodeo, “everything,” he said. One of the highlights is for him to meet the rodeo stars who compete in North Platte. “I’ve met so many neat people,” he said, like (world champion tie-down roper) Tuf Cooper. One morning at slack, he was roping, and I thought, I’d just as well shake his hand. I’ll never get another chance. It’s neat to see all these people and be a part of their life, at least for a few seconds.”

Gragg and his wife Judy raise cattle and quarter horses. She usually doesn’t accompany him to the rodeo, but she was there when he received the Trail Boss Award.

A humble man, he was grateful to receive the award. “It meant the world to me. I never dreamed in a million, in a million-plus years, they’d even consider me for this award. It means the world to me.”

The time he spends at the rodeo is special to him.

“I just consider those four days my vacation. I just love it.”

This year’s rodeo is June 18-21 with nightly shows at 7:30 pm. The rodeo is held at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

Rodeo board members Justin Thompson and Levi Fisher joined the North Platte Post to preview what fans can expect from one of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s top-tier events.

Now just two weeks away, final preparations are underway for the nationally recognized rodeo, which runs Wednesday, June 18 through Friday, June 21. Fisher said planning is complete and the focus is now on last-minute details at the arena.

“We’ve got contestant lists in, all the pieces are in place — now it’s just about finishing strong,” Fisher said.

A highlight of this year’s rodeo is the return of&nbsp; rodeo clown John Harrison.&nbsp;Harrison just won the "Triple Crown of Rodeo Clowns" at the PRCA Awards Banquet in December for the third year in a row. He won Comedy Act of the Year for the 9th time, Coors Man in the Can for the 8th time and for the third time in his career...Clown of the Year!  Known for his high-energy comedy acts and crowd interaction, Harrison will provide specialty entertainment each night.

“He’s one of the best in the business, and fans are going to see something new every night,” said Thompson. “You can come to all four nights and get a completely different show.”

Organizers also emphasized the rodeo’s top-tier production quality, comparable to what fans see at the National Finals Rodeo. With nightly production meetings, high-end video and audio equipment, and a live broadcast on The Cowboy Channel, the experience is designed to be fast-paced and professional from start to finish.

Veteran Hall of Fame PRCA announcer Randy Corley will return to the crow’s nest this year, joined by Garrison Allen. Corley, the son-in-law of the late Hall of Fame announcer Hadley Barrett, continues a tradition of elite rodeo commentary in North Platte.

Buffalo Bill Rodeo Returns June 18 with Four Nights of PRCA Action

Lincoln, Neb., May 30&nbsp;—&nbsp;Agricultural landowners and tenants in Nebraska who are involved in crop share lease agreements are invited to participate in a new survey from the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Data from responses will be used to better understand how crop share leases are structured across the state and inform new publications.Crop share agreements allow landlords and tenants to share both the risks and rewards of crop production. But the terms of these agreements — how costs and returns are divided — can differ widely depending on region, crop type, land productivity, and local traditions.

“Many leases are still based on verbal agreements or old rules of thumb,” said Anastasia Meyer, extension agricultural economist with the Center for Agricultural Profitability. “We know practices vary, but we don’t have consistent statewide data showing how. This survey is an important step toward helping landowners and producers make better-informed decisions.”

The anonymous survey asks participants — whether landlords or tenants — about lease structures, shared expenses, and other common terms. Results will inform the development of educational materials and tools to support fair and effective lease negotiations across Nebraska.

UNL Seeks Input from Nebraska Ag Landowners and Tenants in New Crop Share Survey

North Platte, Neb. - May 27, 2025 - Raegyn Beachner lives for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte. The 14-year-old cowgirl, a resident of Hershey,&nbsp; volunteers at the rodeo, carrying sponsor flags during the grand entry of each night of rodeo, and saddling, unsaddling and warming up horses that the rodeo queens ride.&nbsp; Beachner has been helping at the rodeo the past four years, but she's been attending it since she was a baby.

The daughter of Ashley and Tylan Gayman and Levi Beachner, her grandparents, Tom and Shelli Arensdorf, live near Hershey. Raegyn and her family lived near Parsons, Kan., but every summer they would come back to Nebraska for the week of rodeo. Raegyn and her mom moved to Hershey seven years ago.

State rodeo queens from all over the country come to North Platte for the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and Beachner saddles their horses and warms them up, so they are ready to ride. Marvin Mueller, Sutherland, supplies many of the saddle horses the queens ride.

She's had the chance the last two years to carry a flag on horseback in the grand entry, which is what she loves. She also loves meeting all the queens, including Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo America, who visit North Platte for the rodeo. "I get to meet a bunch of new queens, and I get to meet the professional rodeo athletes, too," she said.

The sponsor flag staging area is close to where the cowboys and cowgirls warm up their horses, so Beachner has rubbed elbows with big-name barrel racers like world champions Hailey Kinsel and Fallon Taylor and multiple-time National Finals Rodeo qualifiers like Emily Beisel and Stevi HIllman.

Beachner comes from a long line of rodeo volunteers. Her grandma has been on the Buffalo Bill Rodeo committee for twenty years, and competed in high school and professional rodeo as well.&nbsp;"She lives for it," Arensdorf said, of her granddaughter. She loves being around horses. "She will spend hours and hours and hours with the horses, combing, petting, bathing, walking and riding them."&nbsp; &nbsp;"I love having a personal friend," Beachner says. "I talk to them, and they're always there when you need them."&nbsp;

The Buffalo Bill Rodeo takes place June 18-21 in North Platte at the Wild West Arena. Shows start each night at 7:30 pm.&nbsp;Tickets range in price from $11-$24 and can be purchased online at NebraskalandDays.com, at the NebraskalandDays office, and at the gate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LOVING RODEO: Buffalo Bill Rodeo volunteer loves chance to volunteer at rodeo, work with horses

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The North Platte Stockyards Sale Barn hosted its largest Catalog Horse Sale to date on Tuesday, May 27, drawing a full house of buyers and sellers and moving 238 head through the ring.

The top-selling horse of the night fetched $14,750 — a 7-year-old registered gelding known for his ranch experience, gentle disposition and striking grey coat.

A 5-year-old Draft Cross gelding, previously named Horse of the Year on the local ranch rodeo circuit, followed closely at $14,000. Organizers described him as “dog gentle” and well-suited for ranch work or recreational riding.

Horses with arena credentials also proved popular. A 15-year-old palomino gelding trained in team roping sold for $13,250, while a 17-year-old red roan gelding brought in $10,000.

The loose horse market remained strong, with the top loose horse — a shapely palomino gelding — selling for $4,900.

The top five horses averaged $12,300, while the top 10 averaged $10,585.

"This was our biggest sale to date, and demand was strong from start to finish," the Stockyards said in a statement. "We appreciate all of our buyers and sellers who made it such a successful event."

The next Catalog Horse Sale at North Platte Stockyards is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29.

The Grape &amp; Sizzle event, organized by the Lincoln County Cattle Women's Association, will take place Friday, June 6, at Venue 304 in downtown North Platte. The evening combines gourmet food, wine tasting, and lively auctions to raise funds for local nonprofits.Tracy Olson, president of Grape &amp; Sizzle, and board secretary Amanda White joined the Sandhills Post this week to share details about the event, which has supported Lincoln County for over two decades.“Our slogan is ‘Beef for a Cause,’ and our mission is to promote the beef industry while giving back to local nonprofits,” Olson said.This year, three nonprofit recipients were selected through a competitive process:<ul>
 <li>The Connection, a shelter in North Platte that supports homeless individuals and families on their path to permanent housing.
</li><li>CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), which aids children in the juvenile court system, particularly those in foster care. Funds will help expand their Kids' Closet, which provides essential items for youth.
</li><li>Lincoln County 4-H Council, which serves children ages 5 to 18. This year’s funds will go toward agricultural literacy displays on corn, beef, pollinators, and pork.
