Central Nebraska community partners are coming together to host a free Ag Health and Safety Event, Cultivating Health, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in Gothenburg.

The event will be held at the Dayspring Bank Event Center and is designed to take a broad look at the health, safety, and day-to-day challenges involved in agriculture and rural life.

Joe Richeson, one of the organizers, said the event goes beyond traditional safety training.

“This isn’t hard-hat safety or excavation safety,” Richeson said. “It’s more of a top-down approach to what it takes to run an ag operation, whether you’re a producer, farmer, rancher, or involved in ag in some other way.”

Sessions throughout the day will cover a wide range of topics, including mental health, distracted driving, water quality and quantity, nitrates in drinking water, occupational safety, and nutrition for long workdays in the field.

Presenters include the Nebraska Trucking Association, members of the governor’s groundwater task force, Nebraska Medicine, and an occupational therapist focusing on safe movement and body mechanics. A session on food preparation will also address how to safely prepare energy-rich meals for long days during planting, harvesting, or livestock work.

Richeson said the event is open to anyone, not just those directly involved in agriculture.

“You don’t have to be ag-related to attend,” he said. “Ag touches everyone’s life every day, whether you realize it or not.”

Spouses and family members are encouraged to attend, particularly for the mental health session, which focuses on coping with the stresses unique to the agricultural industry, including markets, employees, and daily uncertainty.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Exhibit booths will be set up by noon and remain open until 4 p.m., with sessions concluding at 4 p.m. A business-after-hours event will follow from 4 to 7 p.m.

Attendees may come and go throughout the day and are not required to stay for all sessions. A free lunch will be provided, and local FFA members will assist during the event.

Health screenings will also be available through Gothenburg Health, with options for multiple screenings, including full blood work for those who choose to fast.

Registration is not required but is encouraged. Information is available on the Gothenburg Health Facebook page, the Gothenburg Irrigation Facebook page, or by contacting Richeson directly at 308-529-1181.

🎙️Central Nebraska Partners to Host Free Ag Health and Safety Event in Gothenburg

CHASE COUNTY — A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle moved through much of Chase County and into Imperial Thursday afternoon before ending with two arrests.

According to the Chase County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy spotted a dark-colored sedan traveling at a high rate of speed west of Imperial on Highway 6 around 2:39 p.m. The vehicle was clocked above the posted 65 mile-per-hour speed limit.

The deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, identified as a black Ford Fusion without license plates, but the driver failed to stop and continued eastbound, increasing speed.

As the pursuit continued, another deputy positioned stop sticks farther east on Highway 6 before the vehicle entered Imperial. Officers with the Imperial Police Department also staged at the north end of Broadway Street. Authorities say the driver was able to swerve around the stop sticks and continued through Imperial.

The vehicle traveled onto Spur 15A and into Champion, then looped back toward Imperial using county roads. Spike strips were successfully deployed before the vehicle reentered town.

The pursuit continued through Imperial and east on Highway 6, where the vehicle left the roadway and drove through several fields before returning to town. After traveling through streets and yards in Imperial, the vehicle was finally stopped at the intersection of East Third Street and Highway 61.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Brian Foster of Denver, Colorado, and a passenger, 25-year-old Michelle Marie Fernandez of Florida, were taken into custody without further incident.

Investigators later confirmed the Ford Fusion had been reported stolen.

Foster was arrested on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities say additional charges are possible as the investigation continues. Foster is also reportedly wanted in Colorado on multiple felony charges.

NORTH PLATTE — The Miss Nebraska Organization will return to North Platte in early February for its annual Crowns and Gowns weekend, bringing pageant events, leadership workshops and a former Miss America to the community.

Crowns and Gowns is scheduled for Feb. 6–8 and serves as the final local competition opportunity for contestants before the Miss Nebraska state pageant in June. Events are centered around professional development for young women ages 14 to 27, as well as public activities open to the community.

This year’s weekend will feature Heather French Henry, Miss America 2000, who will serve as a keynote guest throughout the weekend. French Henry will emcee the local Miss Nebraska competition on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. at Mid-Plains Community College. Doors are expected to open at 6:30 p.m., with tickets available at the door.

She will also headline a Women’s Empowerment Luncheon on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at North 40 Chophouse. Tickets for the luncheon are available online at MissNebraska.org.

Megan Doughty, executive director of the Miss Nebraska Organization, said Crowns and Gowns is designed to help young women grow far beyond the stage.

“The word ‘pageant’ is really a misnomer anymore,” Doughty said. “It’s about developing personal passions, advocacy and life skills that carry through long after competition.”

Throughout the weekend, delegates will participate in workshops focused on interview skills, public speaking, branding, advocacy development and community engagement. Professional hair and makeup services, headshot photography and private gown appointments will also be offered.

The local competition includes personal interviews with judges, on-stage questions, fitness wear, evening gown and talent segments. Scholarships are awarded based on placement and special awards.

According to Doughty, the Miss Nebraska Organization awards more than $40,000 annually in cash scholarships, along with access to more than $1 million in tuition scholarships through partnerships with Nebraska colleges and universities.

The current titleholders include Miss Nebraska’s Teen Gabriella Swift of North Platte and Miss Nebraska 2025 Mackenzie Gregory of Scottsbluff.

Doughty said community support has helped make North Platte a key location for pageant events statewide.

“We’re bringing young women from across Nebraska to experience our community,” she said. “It’s about showcasing North Platte while helping these delegates realize their potential.”

Ogallala, Neb. - The Ogallala YMCA is building momentum heading into February with new members, upcoming fitness challenges, expanded class offerings, and plans to introduce indoor pickleball.

Melissa Ewert, branch executive director of the Ogallala YMCA, said last week’s “Try the Y Day” event was a success despite extremely cold weather.

“We did about 15 to 20 memberships and I would say half of those were new members and half were renewals that day,” Ewert said.

While evening class attendance was lighter than expected due to the cold, Ewert said the event still achieved its main goal: introducing new people to the facility.

“There were so many new faces that I had never seen, and that was the plan for this — to get new people in, get them interested and get them comfortable coming in,” she said.

Personal training also saw a boost, with around five new clients signing up. Ewert said trainer Amber was busy with consultations throughout the day.

“That alone made the day a success,” she said.

The YMCA is also adding two new Silver Sneakers classes beginning next week. The classes are designed for beginners, people returning to exercise after a long break, or those recovering from illness or injury.

One class, Silver Sneakers Classic, will focus on low-impact strength training using weights, bands and balls. The second is a chair yoga class. Both will be led by instructor Kim.

Ewert said the classes are meant to help people ease back into physical activity.

“You should never just think, ‘I took this many months off, I’m going to jump right back into where I started,’ because that does not happen,” she said.

Youth basketball is also getting underway, with coaches now contacting families. Games are scheduled to begin February 22.

In addition, the YMCA has launched a Gratitude Miles Challenge. Members can track the miles they walk, run, bike or swim, and write something they’re grateful for on a board in the lobby.

“It’s a good way to remind people that we should be thankful for our health and for our families, and just keep them motivated to continue moving,” Ewert said.

One of the most anticipated additions is indoor pickleball. The YMCA will be adding pickleball court lines to its basketball court, allowing community members to play throughout the winter.

“We’re going to set up times where people can come in and play pickleball here at the Y,” Ewert said.

She noted that many residents currently travel to nearby communities for indoor pickleball, and this will provide a closer option.

Pickleball’s growing popularity reflects the YMCA’s mission of community engagement, something Ewert says is central to the organization’s identity.

“Being able to work for people who want to build our community and do things for our youth in town and just build those relationships with everyone that comes in the door is pretty special,” she said.

Ewert said the growth at the Ogallala YMCA over the past year has been significant, with expanded programs and increased participation.

“Sometimes change is growing pain, but I can say this has been painless for change,” she said.

Ewert said trainer Amber was busy with consultations throughout the day.“That alone made the day a success,” she said.<h2>New Silver Sneakers Classes</h2>The YMCA is also adding two new Silver Sneakers classes beginning next week. The classes are designed for beginners, people returning to exercise after a long break, or those recovering from illness or injury.One class, Silver Sneakers Classic, will focus on low-impact strength training using weights, bands and balls. The second is a chair yoga class. Both will be led by instructor Kim.Ewert said the classes are meant to help people ease back into physical activity.“You should never just think, ‘I took this many months off, I’m going to jump right back into where I started,’ because that does not happen,” she said.<h2>Youth Basketball and Fitness Challenges</h2>Youth basketball is also getting underway, with coaches now contacting families. Games are scheduled to begin February 22.In addition, the YMCA has launched a Gratitude Miles Challenge. MPCC announces Fall 2025 President's and Dean's Lists

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) will be offering Vaccines for Children at public clinics in February. Anyone two months of age and older are invited to get their vaccinations. Flu shots will still be available for anyone 6 months of age and older. Flu (influenza) is circulating throughout the health district, and almost 100 people have gone to the emergency room for influenza so far this flu season. Getting a flu shot now will provide protection for the rest of time flu is going around. It is never too late to get a flu shot.

Curtis&nbsp;– Monday, February 9th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Medicine Valley High School.

Imperial&nbsp;– Wednesday, February 18th, 4:00-6:00 pm Mountain Time at Chase County Clinic.

Ogallala&nbsp;– by appointment only, based upon the nurse availability, at 10 N Spruce St, Suite B.

McCook&nbsp;–&nbsp;daily Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:00 pm based upon the nurse availability, at 404 West 10th Street (one block north of Arby’s).

Shingles is a painful illness caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After someone recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body and can reactivate years later as shingles. Shingles can cause burning pain, blisters, fever, and in some cases long-lasting nerve pain. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults&nbsp;50 years and older&nbsp;get the shingles vaccine, called&nbsp;Shingrix, even if they have had shingles before or do not remember having chickenpox. If you had two doses of the older Zostavax vaccine, you are still eligible to receive the Shingrix vaccine.

SWNPHD: Vaccines for Children Public Clinics in February

HERSHEY, Neb. — Hershey Public Schools, in partnership with Public School Proud, has released a new video highlighting the district’s Digital Citizenship Initiative, which focuses on helping students and families make safe, respectful, and responsible choices online.

The initiative emphasizes the lasting impact of online behavior, reminding students that posts, comments, screenshots, and tags can follow them long after they are shared.

The video features voices from across the Hershey school community, including Superintendent Jane Davis, Director of Teaching and Learning Sarah Ostmeyer, students Demi DaMoude and Cole Murdock, both juniors, sixth-grade student Kyler Klein, parent Mandy Abbott, and school board president Steve Koch.

Hershey’s Digital Citizenship Initiative is built around six core principles designed to help students manage their digital footprint. Those principles include finding balance in digital use, respecting privacy, understanding the impact of words and actions, defining personal identity, practicing kindness and courage, and being critical thinkers and creators online.

According to district officials, the initiative grew out of a Board of Education goal-setting process that addressed increasing concerns over student cell phone use, social media behavior, and online safety.

“We want students to understand that what they do online impacts real people,” said Superintendent Jane Davis. “Our goal is to help them make choices that show respect, protect privacy, and build a positive digital footprint.”

Koch said the effort helps connect schools and families around a shared message.

“When we support students in learning responsible online habits, we strengthen our school culture and our community,” he said.

As part of the initiative, Hershey Public Schools shares weekly digital citizenship reminders through school communications, digital signage, and social media. The district also provides resources and conversation starters for parents to encourage discussions at home.

The Nebraska Rural Community Schools Association, in partnership with A.Plum Creative, has shared information about Hershey’s approach with member districts interested in implementing similar programs. The video is available on the Public School Proud website.

SIDNEY, Neb. — Authorities have confirmed that the body of Kara L. Bancroft-Westman, who was reported missing and considered at-risk, was discovered Sunday morning in Sidney.

The Sidney Police Department said Bancroft-Westman, 51, was reported missing on Friday, January 24. At that time, police issued an urgent alert asking for the public’s help, noting she was last seen Thursday evening around 10:00 p.m. in the vicinity of Walmart. Authorities said she did not have her cell phone with her and had been without necessary medication for several days, prompting concerns for her safety.

Police described Bancroft-Westman as 5 feet 2 inches tall, weighing approximately 135 pounds, with grey hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a long black trench coat that reached her ankles.

On Sunday, January 25, the Sidney Police Department and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office announced that Bancroft-Westman’s body was discovered at approximately 11:00 a.m. Authorities did not release the location where she was found.

In a joint statement, the agencies said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing and remains active. No additional details are being released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Officials expressed condolences to Bancroft-Westman’s family and loved ones and asked the public to respect their privacy during this time.

The meeting will cover several important topics, including the resignation of council member Kevin Block and other routine business affecting the community.

The council will review consent items such as the resignation of JD Cartwright from the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department and a change order for the West and East 2nd Street improvement projects. City departments will provide updates, including a fiscal year 2024–2025 audit presentation by Marcy Luth of AMGL. Reports from the Tree Board and the Library, covering quarterly and annual activities, are also scheduled for discussion.

Additionally, the council will hear a public update from PeopleService Inc., the city’s utility management provider, and consider requests for proposals to upgrade SCADA systems for both the city’s wastewater and water departments. An emergency ordinance will allow for the contracting and repair of the South Lift Station pumps, with a related claim of $106,150 for the necessary repairs. Planning and zoning matters will also be addressed, including vacating a portion of a roadway in Bairn’s Subdivision and approving the final plat for the AlVarado Replat in the same subdivision.

Council members will provide reports on their committee assignments, including the Board of Health, Ogallala Community Hospital and Health Foundation, the Library Board, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Keith County Area Development, and West Central Nebraska Development District. The meeting will conclude with updates from the city attorney, city manager, and council members, and may include a closed session if needed under Nebraska law.

January 23, 2026 (Scottsbluff, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a former Scotts Bluff County corrections officer after an investigation into a reported incident involving an inmate.

On Thursday, investigators arrested Christopher Schlosser, 55, of Scottsbluff, for one count of sexual abuse of an inmate. The arrest occurred at Schlosser’s home. The incident occurred on October 13, 2025. Schlosser resigned his position at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center shortly thereafter, after being placed on administrative leave, pending investigation.

The incident was reported to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, which has worked with NSP during the investigation. The Scotts Bluff County Detention Center also assisted in this investigation. Schlosser was lodged at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

Mark and Robyn Jones hope to invest and build ‘world-class cattle operation’

LINCOLN — In what appears to be a record-high buy for a Nebraska ranch, a roughly 40,000-acre Sandhills property with a history of prominent owners has shifted hands to a self-made billionaire insurance couple with a vision to build a “world-class cattle operation.”

Sold for $56 million, Lincoln County’s Pawnee Springs Ranch on Tuesday became the latest investment for Mark and Robyn Jones of Westlake, Texas. The high school sweethearts with a growing family of six kids and 20 grandchildren said they were seeking to diversify their business ventures.

Among other key holdings is part ownership of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goosehead.com/about/" target="_blank">Goosehead Insurance</a>, a public company the Joneses founded and grew, and a sprawling forested timberland ranch the pair bought a few years ago in Montana.&nbsp;

“What we wanted to do is have a sizable operation that focuses on actual agricultural production,” Mark Jones said in an interview days ago on his 64th birthday. “The Sandhills quickly jumped to the top of the list.”

Mark Johnson of Hall and Hall, which handles ag real estate in nine states, said Pawnee Springs Ranch “exemplifies the top qualities of a Nebraska Sandhills river ranch.”

Drawn by the property’s 2,500 mother cows, wildlife habitat, native range, river corridors and other ag benefits of the Ogallala Aquifer, Jones said the search led them to the Nebraska ranchland east of North Platte, whose name harkens to the area’s original Native American inhabitants.

Hall and Hall, an ag focused multi-state real estate company based in Valentine, represented both the buyer and seller in the private listing deal, with local agent Mark Johnson serving as listing broker.&nbsp;

When Hall and Hall represented owners of the Nebraska Metzger ranch last year, the asking price for that 55,136-acre property was $50 million, an amount brokers described then as possible state record for a ranch sale. Johnson said the Metzger family ultimately decided to keep the Cherry County multigenerational ranch and work through the family dynamics.

Publicly available documents show that the Gottsch Feeding Corp. sold Pawnee Springs Land and Cattle LLC Tuesday for $56 million.

“It’s the largest total dollar ranch sale we’ve been able to determine from any records we could find,” Johnson said.

Among past owners of the Pawnee Springs property, which dates back to 1918, are names that ring familiar to Nebraska business and social circles. A former Nebraska governor, Keith Neville, was a previous owner. Construction titan Peter Kiewit bought the operation in 1949. He once told the North Platte Telegraph that the ranch derived its name from the natural springs that flowed.

The family behind Gottsch Feeding Corp. started leasing in 1985 and eventually purchased the ranch. In a statement regarding Tuesday’s sale, the Gottsches said “with a heavy heart” it agreed to sell a ranch that has been part of their family for 41 years.

“With three generations being a part of the spring brandings, summer grass and fall/winter backgroundings, Pawnee has shaped many lives,” the Gottsches said, offering special thanks to the Boeshart family caretakers and to neighbors who pitched in to help during branding season. “Those memories will always be cherished.”

The Gottsch statement said its family business footprint spans Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Texas, and its commitment stretches seven decades of “bridging the gap between ranching, high-tech feedlot management and sustainable farming.”

Under the new ownership, Pawnee Springs for the most part will maintain current operations, said Ryan Langston, son-in-law to Jones and new CEO of the ranch. That includes raising calves from birth to weaning and returning them to grass as yearlings, as well as running ag pivots.

Three cowboys who now live and work on the ranch will stay, Langston said, and a new manager is to be hired to replace the current one who he said is moving on with the Gottsches.

“We are making a long-term commitment to the area,” Langston said. “We intend to hire local talent where possible, partner with our neighbors and make meaningful contributions to the local community.”

Known also for philanthropy, the Joneses in 2021 donated $101 million to the Montana State University nursing program — the home state of the scenic Flathead Ridge Ranch they bought that year. The couple&nbsp;<a href="https://www.montana.edu/news/21412/a-day-of-new-beginnings-msu-nursing-college-receives-101-million-gift-from-founders-of-goosehead-insurance" target="_blank">told the university</a>&nbsp;news service their intention was to help address one of the most defining challenges of the time: access to health care, particularly for residents of rural and remote areas.

The university at the time called it the largest ever donation to a college of nursing and the largest private gift in the state’s history.

Regarding the Nebraska purchase, Jones told the Examiner he and his wife hope it is the first of more acquisitions in the region. He said they were eager to invest in and build a “large-scale, truly world-class beef production operation … that in its most fundamental form is converting grass to protein.”&nbsp;

He sees the family’s focus being in Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming and Montana. The Pawnee Springs operation, he said, “will be a platform we can build onto.”

As a commercial enterprise, the Nebraska tract differs from the Jones’ 125,000-acre alpine ranch in Montana, which they refer to as a&nbsp;<a href="https://flatheadbeacon.com/2021/02/08/texas-power-couple-acquires-125800-acres-of-timberland-west-of-kalispell/" target="_blank">“family legacy investment.</a>” Jones said he and his wife have tried to continue that property’s historical use by keeping the vast majority open to public recreation.

There, he said, “our objective is really to&nbsp;<a href="https://flatheadbeacon.com/2021/06/09/meet-the-joneses/" target="_blank">conserve the land</a>. It’s been fairly heavily logged … So we’re very focused on nursing the forest back to optimal health.”&nbsp;

The Joneses are not planning to live in Nebraska, but hope to be “active participants” in the local community.

Said Jones: “You should expect us to have a very real and ongoing presence and engagement with the community.”

The couple’s fortune is built upon a relationship that started as teens in Alberta, Canada. Married young and with their first few kids, Jones said he enrolled in college in the mid-1980s. In 1989, the family moved to Boston so he could attend Harvard Business School.

“Robyn was pregnant at that time with our fifth daughter. I believe that we still hold the record for the greatest number of kids for any Harvard Business School student,” Jones said with a chuckle.

He worked several years at Bain global management consulting firm. Robyn went from stay-at-home mom to work that led her to establish the insurance company the couple continued to grow together, after her husband made a job switch.
