February 17, 2025 (OMAHA, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is heartbroken to announce that a Nebraska State Trooper has been killed in the line of duty today.

The&nbsp; Trooper was Kyle McAcy #302, who gave his life in the line of duty this morning while assisting motorists who had been involved in a crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland. 

Preliminary investigation shows that Trooper McAcy was responding with other troopers to a crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 424, between Ashland and Greenwood. During that response, Trooper McAcy was outside his patrol unit and was struck by a snowplow.

Trooper McAcy has been a dedicated Trooper for 10 years and an incredible friend to countless people. Please keep his family, friends, colleagues, and all who have the honor of knowing him in your hearts following this unimaginable loss.&nbsp; Trooper McAcy served in North Platte prior to taking post on the eastern side of the state.

“Our NSP family is devastated today,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Kyle was a dedicated trooper, a devoted public servant, and most importantly a good friend to many in Omaha and beyond. His loss is being felt by countless people. Please keep his family, friends, colleagues, and community in your hearts as they deal with this unimaginable loss.”

Trooper McAcy, 31, was a ten-year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol. He was a graduate of Camp 56 and wore badge #302. Trooper McAcy has served in the Patrol Division, Carrier Enforcement, and as a Crisis Negotiator. He was stationed in Omaha.

NSP has asked the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office to conduct the crash investigation. As winter weather conditions continue across the state, NSP urges all motorists to be safe if they must travel.&nbsp;

Former North Platte Trooper killed while responding to crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced its fall 2024 dean’s list for students enrolled in nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the allied health professions of medical imaging and therapeutic sciences program and medical laboratory science.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To qualify for the dean’s list, nursing and the allied health students must be enrolled for 12 or more hours during the semester and have a grade point average of 3.75 or above. To qualify for the pharmacy dean’s list, students must place in the top 20% of their class and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Dental students must be in the top 10% of their class for the semester.&nbsp;

UNMC Announces Fall 2024 Dean’s List

North Platte Community College’s 56th annual Inter-High Day lured in 373 students from 14 area high schools Thursday.

They competed for scholarships and other prizes while taking tests in everything from art, accounting and criminal justice to auto body, welding and diesel technology. The scholastic contest was spread across both of NPCC’s campuses.

Schools earned points based on how well their students placed in the academic divisions. The top three point earning schools received a plaque and a $500 scholarship to award to a student of their choice.

Individual first place winners received a medal, a $500 scholarship and three credit hours of summer tuition to the college. Second and third place recipients earned medals as well as three credit hours of summer tuition.

The top three winners in each of the applied technology competitions also received industry-based prizes related to their test areas.

The Hot Sheets: February 16th, 2025

Alliance, Ne – According to the Alliance Police Department, officers
were dispatched around 3am on Saturday morning to Box Butte General Hospital in
Alliance for a report of a male who had been assaulted. Officers arrived and observed
the victim to have sustained possible life-threatening injuries. The initial
investigation revealed that the suspect drove the victim to the hospital after
the assault. Witnesses stated that the suspect punched the victim repeatedly
after a verbal argument escalated.

The victim fell to the ground, striking his head on the
pavement. The suspect continued to strike the victim several times until a
witness intervened. The suspect then drove the victim to the hospital and did
not disclose that he had caused the injuries to the victim. The suspect was identified
as Dreyson McCormick of Alliance. Following interview with all witnesses,
McCormick was located and taken into custody without incident. The victim
remains in critical condition.

McCormick is currently being held in the Box Butte County
Jail where he is facing a charge of First-Degree Assault.

Surplus items include TVs, printers, iPads, MacBooks and other laptops. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department

The Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) announces their 16th annual Radon Poster Contest winners. Students aged 9 to 14 made posters about the hazards of radon gas, which is the second leading cause of cancer. Entries were judged in December and presentations were held at four schools in January for Radon Action Month.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;“The radon poster contest offers a fun opportunity for students to understand the elevated radon levels we face here in Nebraska and the actions we can take to address it,” says Hunter York, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “The creativity displayed by the students is impressive. We extend our congratulations to all participants for their efforts in educating our communities about the dangers of radon and ways to lower the risk of lung cancer.”&nbsp;

Posters will be displayed on social media, on website (starting February 12th) and on McCook LED sign at 404 West 10th Street.&nbsp;

Paws-itive Partners Humane Society is sponsoring Lower Income Love My Cat during the month of March 2025.&nbsp; Just coming off a 4-month-long Love My Cat period, Paws-itive Partners and local veterinarians are, once again, working together to make spaying and neutering financially feasible for pet owners.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Being a pet owner has its responsibilities and spaying and neutering is an important part of that responsibility.&nbsp; Altering a cat's reproductivity is the most cost-effective way to control cat overpopulation.&nbsp; Left unaltered, the results are unplanned litters, homelessness, suffering and abandonment.&nbsp; Spaying and neutering cats can reduce cancer risks, unwanted behaviors, roaming and aggression.&nbsp;

Pet owners who qualify for Lower Income Love My Cat assistance can register by calling&nbsp;308-650-PAWS, 308-660-5561 or 308-530-1516 or go online to&nbsp;<a href="http://pawsitivepartners.org/" target="_blank">pawsitivepartners.</a>&nbsp;click "Spay &amp; Neuter." Love My Cat is accepting up to four cats per person.&nbsp; Unowned community cats are welcome and cat advocates feeding and sheltering community cats are especially encouraged to take helping cats an additional step by spaying/neutering.&nbsp;

Love My Cat surgery is an affordable $45 per cat.&nbsp; Some clinics require exams and vaccinations for new clients and some have additional fees.&nbsp; This will be explained to pet owners when they contact Paws-itive Partners.&nbsp; Payment is expected at the time of appointments.&nbsp; Pet owners are encouraged to contact one of the above numbers or go online now to schedule appointments.&nbsp; Appointments are limited and must be completed by the last day of March.&nbsp;Paws-itive Partners has spayed and neutered more than 7,000 cats during Love My Cat months.&nbsp; In addition to that, Paws-itve&nbsp;Partners helps spay and neuter hundreds of dogs and cats year-round through their Get 'Em Fixed program and specialty programs such as Be Responsi-Bull.&nbsp;

That’s why Community Connections is providing Lincoln County residents with the&nbsp; Deterra® Drug Deactivation and Disposal System for permanent, at-home drug disposal. By distributing Deterra Pouches, Community Connections aims to help local households&nbsp; prevent medication misuse, accidental ingestion, and environmental harm by safely&nbsp; deactivating and disposing of expired or unneeded medications.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Community Connections provides free at-home drug deactivation and disposal  pouches to help prevent prescription drug misuse in Lincoln County

For Children’s Dental Health Month, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages parents to teach good dental habits and get regular dental care for their children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit their dentist no later than their first birthday and every six months after that. When children learn how to care for their teeth early in life, their families save on costs and prevent future problems.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“According to AAPD, tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood illness in the United States, and the most preventable of all health problems,” states Sarah Minnick, Program Manager for SWNPHD.&nbsp; “Oral health care is part of overall health care. Now is the time to teach good oral health.”&nbsp;

Polish Your Pearls is a grant-based dental program from SWNPHD that helps supplement regular dental visits to provide protection against cavities for infants and children through 6th grade. This program is available to local daycares, preschools, and schools to provide oral health screening, dental education, sealants, and application of fluoride varnish.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The fluoride varnish that is applied by Polish Your Pearls is a sticky, honey like material that is painted on the teeth with a small soft brush. This varnish can be applied 4 to 6 times per year to strengthen teeth and protect against cavities. Polish Your Pearls also provides children with education on proper brushing and flossing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Having your child participate in the Polish Your Pearls dental program can save money and help prevent problems. In a thrilling matchup, the Knights secured the victory, making the night even more special for attendees.

As honored guests, the group enjoyed the game from the VIP lounge overlooking the court, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Mid-Plains Community College. Attendees were also treated to complimentary popcorn, adding to the fun and lively atmosphere.
