OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — A Perkins County man reported missing after failing to return home from work was found deceased Thursday evening in Keith County, authorities said.

According to the Keith County Sheriff’s Office,  Trenton Weinke of Elsie had been reported missing by the Perkins County Sheriff’s Office on the evening of July 30. Weinke had last been seen while working on irrigation pivots in Keith County and was driving a blue Chevrolet 2500 truck towing an ATV on a trailer.

Initial efforts to locate Weinke began after his cellphone was last pinged in an area south of Highway 61 and east of Ogallala Community Hospital. Deputies conducted vehicle searches in the area throughout the night.

Search efforts resumed the morning of July 31, with the Keith County Sheriff’s Office and Ogallala Ambulance District deploying aerial drones and conducting ground searches using utility terrain vehicles. Despite extensive efforts, Weinke was not located.

Later that day, deputies received a report of a possible pivot site Wenke may have intended to check on his route home. The location was near County Road 20 East and County Road D South. Upon arriving in the area, deputies located Weinke's vehicle approximately half a mile south of the pivot entrance on a minimum maintenance road. He was found deceased at the scene, the result of a vehicle accident.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available, the sheriff’s office said.

Missing Man Found Dead in Keith County Following Overnight Search

A local chapter of the Widows Sons motorcycle organization presented a $6,000 donation to Homestead Refuge on Friday morning, offering a significant boost to the nonprofit’s mission of supporting victims of sex trafficking in rural Nebraska.

The presentation took place during a live radio interview at Eagle Media in North Platte, where representatives from both groups spoke about their shared commitment to helping vulnerable individuals rebuild their lives.

Road Runner, Guardian of Membership for District 13 and a representative of the Widows Sons’ Western Travelers Chapter, said the funds were raised during the group’s annual state rally held in June. The Widows Sons, a fraternal motorcycle group made up of Master Masons, selected Homestead Refuge as the charitable beneficiary for this year’s event.

“We’re a charitable riding organization that focuses on helping widows, orphans, and anyone in need, especially those affected by abuse or hardship,” Road Runner said. “We’re proud of what we were able to raise with the help of our brothers from across the country.”

The Western Travelers Chapter includes nine fully patched members and two journeymen currently working toward full membership. The funds were raised through raffles, auctions, and other rally activities.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Homestead Refuge was Betty Remus, a volunteer who has been instrumental in the organization’s development.

Located in rural Lincoln County, Homestead Refuge offers a safe haven for survivors of sex trafficking, providing peace, privacy, and healing in a country setting. The home features animals and quiet outdoor spaces to aid in recovery.

“We’re a place where survivors can escape the chaos and begin the long process of healing,” Remus said. “This donation means the world to us, especially as we work to sustain and grow our program with limited staff and funding.”

Homestead Refuge currently employs one paid staff member, thanks to a private donor, with the remainder of operations handled by volunteers. The organization began about four years ago, when Remus and others repurposed an old family home into a shelter after feeling called to address the growing trafficking issue in the area.

Widows Sons Donate $6,000 to Homestead Refuge for Victims of Trafficking

August 1, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple crashes that left several people injured and closed parts of I-80 for several hours Thursday.

The initial crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 244 on I-80 westbound. A passenger vehicle suffered a blown-out tire and lost control. A semi hauling cattle attempted to avoid the other vehicle and overturned. Neither driver was injured. There were 36 cattle in the trailer. 21 survived the crash.

As the first crash was nearing the end of clean-up at approximately 6:50 p.m., a second crash occurred approximately one mile east of the first crash. An NDOT arrow truck was parked on the shoulder of westbound I-80, directing traffic to move into the passing lane. A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.

The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.

August 1, 2025 (Lexington, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple crashes that left several people injured and closed parts of I-80 for several hours Thursday.The initial crash occurred just before 1:00 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 244 on I-80 westbound. A passenger vehicle suffered a blown-out tire and lost control. A semi hauling cattle attempted to avoid the other vehicle and overturned. Neither driver was injured. There were 36 cattle in the trailer. 21 survived the crash.As the first crash was nearing the end of clean-up at approximately 6:50 p.m., a second crash occurred approximately one mile east of the first crash. An NDOT arrow truck was parked on the shoulder of westbound I-80, directing traffic to move into the passing lane. A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (Aug. 1, 2025) — The federal building in downtown North Platte now bears a new name, honoring a historic figure in Nebraska politics — former Congresswoman Virginia Smith.

A formal ceremony held this week commemorated the renaming of the building after Smith, who represented Nebraska’s Third Congressional District from 1975 to 1991. She remains the only woman from the state to have served in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The renaming was made possible through legislation introduced in 2024 by members of Nebraska’s federal delegation.

“Her legacy is still all over this Third District,” said Anna Castner Wightman, a former congressional staffer for Smith. “To come from these small towns and help Mrs. Smith serve a district and state we love, and watch her masterfully bring home projects like the Valentine Weather Station and the Heartland Expressway — it was inspiring.”

Current Third District Congressman Adrian Smith praised his predecessor’s dedication and work ethic.

“To serve in her footsteps is an honor,” he said. “She led the way with hard work, traveling the district and really setting the example for how to best serve Nebraskans.”

Lincoln County Commissioner Micaela Wuehler, the first woman elected to the board, called Smith a trailblazer.

“Virginia Smith was more than just the first congresswoman from Nebraska; she broke barriers with grace and grit,” Wuehler said. “She elevated agriculture on the national stage and showed what strong, compassionate representation looks like.”

A similar dedication ceremony is scheduled Friday in Lexington, where the post office will be renamed in honor of William E. and Elsie L. Barrett.

North Platte, NE — West Central District Health Department has confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV), the first detection of the virus in our area this season.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people infected will not develop symptoms, some individuals — particularly older adults and those with weakened immune systems — may develop severe illness.

“This finding is a reminder that West Nile Virus is present in our community,” said Meghan Trevino, Executive Director of West Central District Health Department. “The best protection is prevention. We encourage everyone to take simple steps — like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and removing standing water — to reduce mosquito bites and lower the risk of illness.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following precautions to reduce exposure:

· Use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

· Wear long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure when possible.

· Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes lay eggs (e.g., buckets, flowerpots, old tires, birdbaths).

· Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

OGALLALA, Neb. (July 30, 2025) — As the calendar turns to August, the energy is building at Ogallala Public Schools ahead of the first day of school on Wednesday, August 14. Superintendent Gene Russel says the district is eager to welcome students back with new programs, facility upgrades, and a strong emphasis on community support and student readiness.

Among the key initiatives this year is the “Kick Start to Kindergarten” program. Designed to help incoming kindergarteners ease into their new environment, the program gives students a chance to meet their teachers and experience a mock school day before the official first day of class.

“This helps take away the tears and anxiety for both kids and parents,” Russell said. “It’s a smooth transition that sets the tone for the year.”

Russel says students and families will notice major updates across the district, especially at Prairie View School, where modernization efforts include new record boards, upgraded trophy cases, a freshly painted gym, and a new video scoreboard. At the high school, renovations include remodeled restrooms and custom murals by local artist Brianna Benton, helping create a more engaging and modern atmosphere.

“We’ve worked hard to save over the last four or five years so we could reinvest in the student experience,” said Russel. “We believe our kids deserve to walk into a building that feels exciting and inspiring.”

One of the most significant proposals on the horizon is a possible expansion of the district’s preschool offerings. Ogallala Public Schools is exploring the addition of new preschool classrooms, potentially at the National Guard Armory, to help address a critical early education gap.

According to district data, about 60% of incoming kindergarten students have little to no formal preschool experience.

“We’re seeing too many kids show up not ready—socially, emotionally, or academically,” Russel said. “This expansion could help close that gap and offer free, accessible education to the students who need it most.”

The proposal is still under discussion and will be a topic at upcoming school board meetings in August and September, as the board finalizes its budget and levy.

Russel encourages community members to share their input early: “This is the time to get involved. We want to hear your thoughts before decisions are made.”

New Staff, Fall Sports and Community Spirit

Teachers officially report back to school on Friday, August 8, with returning staff beginning in-service training on Monday, August 11. Russell says the district is welcoming several new staff members this fall and is focused on getting everyone ready for a strong start.

And it wouldn’t be back-to-school season without fall sports. Volleyball, football, cross country, and girls golf all kick off the first week, and the district is rolling out some fun new additions to its concession stands—including soft-serve ice cream and a refreshed menu aimed at making game night the place to be in town.

“It’s going to be fun,” Russel said. “We’re working hard to enhance the experience for students, families, and fans.”

With energy high and plenty of excitement in the air, Ogallala Public Schools is set for a fresh start filled with community, commitment, and continued growth.

The Ogallala City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday morning to consider a key step in the long-anticipated opening of the Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack just south of Interstate 80.

Scheduled for 8 a.m., the meeting will include a public hearing on an application for a Class C liquor license submitted by Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack, LLC. The proposed resort is located at 777 Pony Express Lane and is applying to operate under the name Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack.

Following the hearing, the council will review recommendations from city administration regarding the license. According to the application, the casino would be open from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

The casino is aiming to open its doors on August 10, with live horse racing expected to begin nine days later, on August 19.

The new resort is expected to bring jobs, tourism, and expanded entertainment options to the Ogallala area, and Wednesday’s vote marks a key regulatory hurdle in the development’s final approval process.

OGALLALA, Neb. (July 28, 2025) — The Keith County Fair is back this week in Ogallala, bringing a packed schedule of family-friendly entertainment, competitive events, and classic fair traditions to southwest Nebraska.

While the parade helped kick off the celebration on Sunday, the fair’s main lineup gets underway Tuesday, July 29, and runs through Saturday, August 2. Organizers say they’re especially excited for this year’s slate of events, which includes the return of crowd favorites like Survivor Games, a George Strait tribute concert, the Ranch Rodeo, and the wildly popular Combine Derby.

Survivor Games &amp; Family Night – Wednesday, July 30
Wednesday evening is themed as family night and features the third annual Keith County Survivor Games, a free-to-watch competition in the outdoor arena where teams of four tackle events like the tire flip, tank swim, and gate hop.

“It’s just a lot of fun, and we have different age divisions so everyone can participate,” said fair board member Makenzie Spurgin. Registration has been extended through Tuesday and is available on the Keith County Fair website and Facebook page.

The evening also features the annual BBQ, kicking off the night’s festivities before families move to the arena to cheer on the contestants.

Ranch Rodeo, Karaoke, and More – Thursday, July 31
Thursday brings a full day of 4-H events, culminating in an action-packed evening with the Men’s Ranch Rodeo, Bronc Riding, and Karaoke Night. Spurgin said the karaoke contest continues to be a crowd favorite, adding to the variety for all ages.

George Strait Tribute Concert – Friday, August 1
A major highlight of the week is Friday night’s performance by the Strait Country Tribute Band, which pays homage to country legend George Strait.

“If you’re a George Strait fan, you’ll want to be at this concert,” Spurgin said. “The performer looks and sounds just like him—it’s uncanny.”

VIP meet-and-greet tickets, which include drink tickets, are selling quickly, though general admission tickets are also available online or at the gate. A beer garden will be on-site.

Saturday Spectacular – August 2
Saturday is jam-packed with events starting early with the Fair Board Breakfast, Little Mr. Keith County and Little Miss Ogallala contests, and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull. Activities continue throughout the day with mud volleyball, face painting, bounce houses, a video game trailer, and a free watermelon feed. The 4-H Livestock Sale begins at 2 p.m.

The day caps off with the Combine Derby and lawnmower races, two of the fair’s most anticipated events.

“These lawnmowers are going 40 miles per hour—it’s wild,” Spurgin said. “It might be more dangerous than the Combine Derby.”

Gates open at 6 p.m. for Saturday night’s events, with lawnmower races at 6:30 and the Combine Derby at 7. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for kids ages 6–15, and free for children 5 and under.

Carnival Returns Wednesday–Saturday
The traveling carnival, a key feature for young fairgoers, returns Wednesday through Saturday. Provided by the same operator as the Cheyenne County Fair in Sidney, Spurgin said the goal is to keep the attraction as a yearly staple in Ogallala.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 25, 2025) — A local firefighter took top honors at the “You Can Be a Star” talent show Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln County Fair, earning a spot in the statewide Galaxy of Stars competition next month.

Jeremy Condon, a firefighter with the North Platte Fire Department, opened the competition with an original song, accompanying himself on guitar. Moments after his performance, he had to leave the fairgrounds to report for duty — unaware that just two hours later, he would be named the winner.

The show is part of the Galaxy of the Stars program created by Wynne Adams and held annually at county fairs across Nebraska. As the first-place winner, Condon automatically qualifies for the statewide finals at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. The top prize at that competition is a $4,500 recording package in Nashville.

Thedford’s Brayden Hickman, 14, was named first runner-up. Hickman also competed in last year’s local talent show. Second runner-up honors went to Gavon Schurr.

The event drew a crowd of spectators and showcased a range of local talent across all age groups.

Wynne Adams, who hosts and organizes the event, said the show continues to be a platform for young performers and emerging artists to shine on a larger stage.

The Galaxy of Stars State Finals are scheduled for late August at the Nebraska State Fair.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - A fast-moving thunderstorm dumped torrential rain across western Nebraska Wednesday afternoon, triggering flash flooding in parts of Ogallala and North Platte.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, the storm brought between 1.50 and 2.00 inches of rainfall within a single hour, overwhelming storm drains and sending water spilling over streets, sidewalks, and low-lying areas.

In Ogallala, several intersections were temporarily impassable, with water pooling across residential blocks and portions of downtown. Local law enforcement urged drivers to avoid flooded roadways and use caution during the heaviest part of the storm, which struck between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.

In North Platte, flash flooding swamped storm drains and sent small creeks spilling out of their banks. City crews were dispatched to clear debris from blocked drains and monitor flood-prone areas.

No major injuries were reported, but officials said some vehicles were stranded, and a handful of basements experienced minor flooding.
