Custer County - Officials say a grass fire sparked mid-afternoon on Thursday with multiple agencies responding.&nbsp;

According to a press release from the Custer County Emergency Management, around 3:38 pm on Thursday, the Broken Bow Fire Department was paged for a grass fire that was at the intersection of Gates and Round Valley Road. &nbsp;

With a high wind warning, wind gusts up to 40 mph which the fire was spreading quickly to the southeast. Mutual aid was requested and well over 30 departments responded to the call.&nbsp;

Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful

Thirty-six nominations were received this season for the Beauty of the Holidays lighting competition, organized by Keep North Platte and Lincoln County Beautiful and the North Platte Bulletin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There is no shortage of Christmas spirit this year, with many spectacular, heartwarming displays in yards and homes around the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We love this time of year. Getting out and seeing all of the effort people put into spreading joy, gives us all the Christmas spirit,” KNPLCB Executive Director Mona Anderson said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year’s prizes are generously sponsored by Brothers Tavern, Menard’s, Schaben Sanitation, and Cody Keno.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eighteen community judges traveled over 35 miles driving the streets of North Platte and beyond to rank each nominated display on curb appeal, balance, theme, and maintenance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The rankings were very close.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The purpose of the competition is to spread the Christmas spirit and recognize those who continue to make North Platte and Lincoln County a beautiful place to live.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some of the judges comments include: “Fun and colorful,” “Classy, simple, and serene.”&nbsp; “Reminds me of Martha Stewart.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bulletin Publisher George Lauby thanks everyone who puts up Christmas lights and goes to the extra effort to make the holidays extra beautiful.&nbsp;

“It gives us a lot of cheer,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The sponsors have provided cash prizes for the first-place winners in each ward, to encourage the continuation of community spirit and beautification through the holiday seasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The event is set to begin around 5:30pm and the cookie platter can be bid on at the Mockingbird. This year has been a slower year in donation for the Mid-Plains United Way. Also an update on the giving tree at FNBO and all tags have been claimed.

The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the Rotunda of the Capitol, 1445 K. Street, in Lincoln.

Remarks will be provided by&nbsp;<a>Governor Jim Pillen, Attorney General Mike Hilgers, and Colonel John Bolduc</a>, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. The recruits will receive their badges and take the oath of office, which will be administered by Secretary of State Robert Evnen.

Following graduation, the recruits will begin their careers at Nebraska State Troopers, serving in a variety of communities across the state.

The graduation ceremony will be live streamed on the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.facebook.com/nestatepatrol" target="_blank">NSP Facebook Page.</a>

Nebraska State Patrol 70th Basic Recruit Camp to Graduate Friday

The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, December 18, 2024, in Room 200 of W.W. Wood on the North Platte Community College - North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Jo Etta Brown, Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Ted Klug Jr., Ernie Mehl, Tyler Pribbeno and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer. Board member Kim Korgan, Dr. Ben Lashley and Kent Miller were absent and excused.

NPCC student trustee Jaelyn Dicke was also present.

2. OPEN FORUM (Comments from students, faculty, staff, public and Board)&nbsp;

a. Jaelyn Dicke gave an update on the student activities at North Platte Community College.

b. Haven Smith was introduced to the Board as the new Director of Institutional Advancement.

c. Ernie Mehl was recognized as the NCCA Board of Governors Nominee.&nbsp;

d. Outgoing Board Members Jo Etta Brown and Ernie Mehl shared their appreciation to the Board for their combined 30 years of service on the Board.

e. Jo Etta Brown and Ernie Mehl were honored for their service to MPCC.

c. Outgoing Student Trustee Jaelyn Dicke was presented a certificate of appreciation for her service to the Board of Governors.

&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is excited to announce winners of its fourth annual “Name-A-Snowplow” contest.

Students from Wallace, Hershey and Maywood were selected as winners in this year's contest.

This contest strives to bring awareness about winter weather preparedness and safety to Nebraska’s elementary and middle school students. This year, NDOT received over 1,300 submissions from across the state, a new record for the contest. 

NDOT visited the winning schools to personally congratulate the students. During the visits, students had the chance to see the newly named snowplows up close and ask NDOT snow fighters questions about snow removal and plow operations. 

“This contest is an excellent opportunity to highlight the effort that goes into ensuring our roads are safe, especially during winter,” said NDOT Director Vicki Kramer. “Engaging with students allows us to tell our story while delivering a safety message to Nebraska’s future drivers.” 

NDOT operates a fleet of more than 600 snowplows to ensure driver safety during winter weather. During a winter storm event, each plow is deployed with a full tank of liquids and salts to treat the road surface. 

As winter approaches, drivers can view travel conditions and stay informed by tracking both the newly named snowplows and past winners in real time at 511.nebraska.gov.

&nbsp; Lincoln, Neb. - For more than a century, the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis has been a cornerstone of technical agricultural education, evolving from a high school to a technical college in 1965.Beginning in 2025, NCTA will align more closely with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). 

This partnership aims to enhance resources, expand opportunities, and create seamless pathways for students to enter Nebraska's growing agricultural workforce.

Leadership Transition and Dean Larry Gossen’s Contributions

Larry Gossen, who has served as NCTA’s dean since 2020, will retire in June 2025.“We’re grateful for Dr. Gossen’s leadership and his unwavering commitment to NCTA and Nebraska’s largest industry—agriculture,” said Mike Boehm, University of Nebraska vice president and Harlan Vice Chancellor for UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“Larry guided NCTA through the complexities of COVID with a steadfast focus on students, laying the groundwork for a stronger partnership with CASNR.”

Under Gossen’s leadership, NCTA addressed significant deferred maintenance, including repairs to steam tunnels, roads, roofs, and building exteriors. He strengthened ties between the college and the Curtis community, while spearheading partnerships with CASNR to enhance workforce development and expand continuing education opportunities for Nebraska’s meat processors.

A key milestone during his tenure was securing a $644,489 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to develop a targeted curriculum for the Nebraska meat processing industry. In collaboration with UNL’s Department of Animal Science and private industry, this program trains and credentials potential and current employees. It incorporates hands-on learning at NCTA’s and UNL’s meat labs and offers bilingual materials in English and Spanish to improve workforce skills, retention, and satisfaction.

Gossen also played a pivotal role in securing a transformative $6 million gift from Barbara and Wally Weitz, part of a $12 million project to renovate NCTA’s historic “Barn” into a Student Success and Activity Center. The project will provide vibrant gathering spaces, enhance dining facilities, and expand resources to support student success.

The realignment of NCTA and CASNR will create seamless pathways for students pursuing high-demand agricultural careers. NCTA students will have the opportunity to dual-enroll in CASNR, gaining access to advanced coursework and pathways into four-year degree programs or specialized certificates.

“This partnership will open doors for students to access world-class research facilities and hands-on learning opportunities at sites like the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center, the Great Plains Veterinary Education Center at USMARC, the Klosterman Feedlot Innovation Center, and the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory,” Gossen said. “It equips them with the skills they need to thrive in an evolving agricultural industry.”

CASNR students will also benefit from this collaboration by acquiring technical skills through NCTA coursework and hands-on learning opportunities. They will have the option to earn associate degrees or certificates as they work toward bachelor’s degrees.

“This partnership exemplifies the forward-thinking collaboration that will propel the University of Nebraska on its odyssey to extraordinary,” said NU President Jeffrey P. In total, 11 businesses were checked. Two of those businesses sold alcohol to a minor. Neither of the businesses that sold to a minor checked their ID. The checks throughout these counties had a compliance rate of 82%. The businesses checked included convenience stores, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores.

The Hot Sheets: December 18th, 2024

December 17,2024 — Rachelle Lipker, Executive Director for the American Red Cross, serving Central &amp; Western Nebraska will present the “Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders”. This is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to Reilly Shakin for saving a man’s life on May 24, 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On May 24, 2024, Reilly Shakin, trained in American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR helped to save the life of a man who was unconscious outside the Connection Homeless Shelter in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; Reilly, who works at the facility as a Security Staff member was on duty when she was notified of an unconscious male lying in the alley behind the building.&nbsp; She was the first to respond and immediately began CPR while another staff member called 911.&nbsp; Reilly continued performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived and transported the male to the hospital.&nbsp; Without a doubt, the skills learned in the American Red Cross Training Services course helped to save the life of this gentleman.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trudy Merritt is also being recognized with the award of “The Lifesaving Instructor Award”.&nbsp;&nbsp; This award was crafted in 2020 and recognized instructors that trained a student that saved a life.&nbsp; Ms. Merritt has taught American Red Cross classes for over 30 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

American Red CrossDecember 17,2024 — Rachelle Lipker, Executive Director for the American Red Cross, serving Central &amp; Western Nebraska will present the “Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders”. This is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to Reilly Shakin for saving a man’s life on May 24, 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;On May 24, 2024, Reilly Shakin, trained in American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR helped to save the life of a man who was unconscious outside the Connection Homeless Shelter in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; Reilly, who works at the facility as a Security Staff member was on duty when she was notified of an unconscious male lying in the alley behind the building.&nbsp; She was the first to respond and immediately began CPR while another staff member called 911.&nbsp; Reilly continued performing CPR until emergency personnel arrived and transported the male to the hospital.&nbsp; Without a doubt, the skills learned in the American Red Cross Training Services course helped to save the life of this gentleman.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Trudy Merritt is also being recognized with the award of “The Lifesaving Instructor Award”.&nbsp;&nbsp; This award was crafted in 2020 and recognized instructors that trained a student that saved a life.&nbsp; Ms. Merritt has taught American Red Cross classes for over 30 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This presentation will occur on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 12:00 noon at the Connection Homeless Shelter located at 414 E. 6th. For example, turkey should reach 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, thigh, and wing.</li><li>Avoid the Danger Zone: Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Bacteria can grow rapidly between 40°F and 140°F. Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.</li><li>Thaw Safely: Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator, in cold water (changing the water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave. Viruses such as RSV and COVID-19 have been spreading at high levels throughout November and December, and influenza (the flu) is now also circulating. Covering your coughs and sneezes and washing your hands often with proper hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of these serious respiratory illnesses.

“I have been teaching handwashing to preschool and elementary age kids for about 3 years.” says Paula Wimer, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “I enjoy seeing the expression on the kids faces about how gross germs look.”

Remember to immediately wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from getting sick.

Jocelyn Fattig has been selected as North Platte Community College’s Business Student of the Month for December.

Fattig is from Paxton, Neb., and is married to Lane Fattig. She is a mom to two young children and chose to attend NPCC because of the flexibility of taking classes online.

“MPCC offered me the opportunity to be a successful student and to take certification exams to better myself and my skills,” Fattig said. “I also have such wonderful professors to work with.”

Business instructor Lynn Lupomech nominated Fattig for the Student of the Month recognition.

LINCOLN — A political barrier fell, and the U.S. Senate on Monday passed a bill that would allow more than 180 lakeside cabins to remain at two southwest Nebraska reservoirs.

The proposal, introduced in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., had been held up “as political leverage” last week, but the opposition stepped aside on Monday.

The bill was introduced on behalf of cabin owners along Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs in southwest Nebraska who were threatened with removing their abodes to make way for campground improvements planned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which manages the reservoirs.

Removal of the cabins, some of which have been used by families for decades, was scheduled to begin in February. Last week, it was unclear whether the bill could be passed before the Senate’s holiday recess.

The bill would put the cabins under control of Hitchcock and Frontier counties. It now goes to President Joe Biden for his signature.

“Thankfully, today Congress has agreed to right this wrong by transferring control of this land back to local officials,” Fischer said Monday in a statement.

The members of the Hitchcock and Frontier county boards thanked Fischer and the rest of the Nebraska congressional delegation for pushing the bill to approval in a joint statement.

The House of Representatives had earlier passed a version of the bill for the cabin owners that was introduced by U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb., who represents the 3rd District.

Following disagreement about how the BoR was managing the concession areas at the Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs, the Nebraska congressional delegation received numerous requests to introduce legislation to transfer the ownership of the areas from the BoR to a local entity.&nbsp;In June 2023, members of the Nebraska Congressional delegation&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=48BFD43D-3EB0-404E-B7B4-2B31C6F1A331">wrote a letter</a>&nbsp;stating they would sponsor legislation to authorize a land transfer once they received official documentation from a local, public entity that was willing to accept the land, was cable of managing it for the public, and would take on the associate responsibilities and liabilities.

The bill was drafted in collaboration with Hitchcock County, Frontier County, and the Bureau of Reclamation. Hitchcock and Frontier Counties have now provided confirmation that they are supportive of the legislation as drafted.

The Hot Sheets: December 17th, 2024

Philips County, Colorado -&nbsp;On 12/14/2024 at approximately 23:15 hrs, officers of the Holyoke Police Department were engaged in vehicle pursuit of a wanted suspect, Russell Scott Brown of Cozad, Nebraska. On this evening, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle was known to be operated by a wanted party out of Nebraska and who was believed to be armed and dangerous. Officers also had information that the male party was a known user of methamphetamines and had a lengthy criminal history, including weapons and drug offenses. 

When the officer attempted the traffic stop, the vehicle pulled over initially and waited for the officer to exit his vehicle. The vehicle then sped away from the stop heading north on HWY 385 an officer initiated a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle then turned eastbound onto Colorado HWY 23 and continued to flee from officers. Due to the belief that Brown was armed and posed a public safety risk, a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) was executed on the vehicle. The vehicle came to a stop on the highway after striking the police vehicle. Brown attempted to flee the vehicle on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers and a Deputy from the Phillips County Sheriff's Office. 

Brown was later transported to the Logan County Jail and is waiting court for felony charges related to the pursuit and possession of controlled substances. A passenger of the vehicle was found not to be a part of the criminal episode and was released on scene. All charges are alleged, and the suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Cozad Man Arrested in Colorado Following Pursuit

LINCOLN — A bill to allow lakeside cabin areas to remain at two southwest Nebraska reservoirs is being threatened by last-minute opposition from departing U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, I-West Virginia, and a small group of other legislators.

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., the chief sponsor of the bill on behalf of cabin owners along Swanson and Red Willow Reservoirs, pressed Manchin on Wednesday to reconsider his opposition to her bill, which was part of a larger measure concerning federal lands.

Fischer said her portion of the bill has widespread support in the Senate and passed the House unanimously on a voice vote.

She said her proposal is being unfairly held up “as political leverage for unrelated matters.”

“This really is outrageous,” the Nebraska senator said.&nbsp;“My legislation cannot wait.”

That, she said, is because if her bill isn’t passed, owners of cabins at two sites along the reservoirs will be required to vacate the land in February.&nbsp;

A request for response from Manchin’s office was not immediately returned on Friday.

But the Examiner learned that Manchin has since dropped his opposition, though Fischer’s efforts to pass a stand-alone bill on the cabin developments is being resisted by a different group of lawmakers.

With the U.S. Senate recessing for the year on Friday, Dec. 20, it is unclear if Fischer’s bill can be passed in time to avoid disrupting the cabin developments.

Manchin, a former governor of West Virginia, declined to seek re-election this year after serving in the Senate since 2010.

The cabin controversy, which the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/06/13/rural-county-seeks-to-save-trailers-on-reservoirs-in-southwest-nebraska/">Examiner first reported</a>, pertains to the management of the two reservoirs by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the Bureau’s plan to remove the cabins to make way for improvements to campgrounds facilities.

All are located on land now managed by the Bureau.Cabin owners and county officials in the area objected to the removal order, which was initially scheduled to go into effect in November 2025. They maintained that some families had enjoyed cabins on the lake for decades, and that the two cabin areas were important economic contributors to rural Hitchcock and Red Willow Counties.Under bills introduced in the Senate by Fischer and U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., and in the House by U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith, R-Neb, management of the two cabin developments would be transferred to Hitchcock and Frontier Counties. They would manage the two areas and benefit from lease payments from cabin owners and fees paid by concessionaires.Fischer said that she has received letters from more than 1,000 local residents supporting the transfer of the property, and that the two cabin sites — among the largest communities in the two counties — should be allowed to remain.Hitchcock County Board member Paul Nichols has said that local residents support the land transfer, which will allow communities “in place and operating for decades” to remain.
