Attorney General Mike Hilgers is pleased to announce the upcoming addition of a satellite location of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office in Ogallala, Nebraska. The Attorney General’s Office currently has two outstate investigators in western Nebraska. The expansion is part of the Attorney General’s vision to have more on-the-ground presence to support law enforcement in Greater Nebraska. 

“This is an exciting day for our office. Opening this office will enhance our ability to recruit and retain talented lawyers to western Nebraska, and it will expand our ability to assist our law enforcement partners in this portion of the state,” Attorney General Hilgers expressed at the opening event in Ogallala.

The area is office and conference space shared within the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO) new office building, officially opened with a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, October 10th. 

"NACO is proud to have the Attorney General share our commitment to serving all areas of the state, partnering with us by using space in NACO's new facility in Ogallala," stated Jon Cannon, Executive Director, Nebraska Association of County Officials.

This satellite addition will increase the AGO's reach in supporting criminal cases when surrounding county attorneys seek support in prosecuting cases.

Gardening Back to Basics Classes Offered in October and November for North Platte and Scottsbluff

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– A photography exhibition celebrating 40 years of the University of&nbsp; Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska Women in Agriculture program will be on display through Nov.&nbsp; 20 in North Platte at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center, 402 W. State&nbsp; Farm Road.&nbsp;

A free lecture by Jessica Groskopf, director of Nebraska Women in Agriculture, will be held at&nbsp; the center at 6 p.m., on Nov. 18. She will speak about the historical role of women, their current&nbsp; challenges and their future involvement in agricultural sciences.&nbsp;

The exhibition, “Legacy of Leadership: Faces of Nebraska Women in Agriculture,” aims to&nbsp; highlight the vital role of women in Nebraska’s agricultural landscape with a collection of over&nbsp; 70 portraits captured at the 2024 Nebraska Women in Agriculture Conference by renowned&nbsp; photographer John Noltner. Each portrait is accompanied by the subject’s short answer to the&nbsp; question, “what has called you to this work?”&nbsp;

"We are thrilled to present this unique exhibition honoring the resilience, innovation and&nbsp; enduring impact of women in agriculture," Groskopf said. "Through these powerful portraits, we&nbsp; hope to encourage discussion about the important role of women in our state’s largest industry."&nbsp;

The traveling exhibit has been featured at this year’s Nebraska State Fair, Husker Harvest Days&nbsp; and in the Loft Gallery in the Nebraska East Union in Lincoln.

Launched in 2023, the initiative aims to connect Nebraska’s sustainably produced commodities with growing global market demand. Our mission is simple but critical: to ensure Nebraska’s agriculture is seen as the most sustainable ag supply chain in the world. Full Value Agriculture’s efforts focus on helping producers achieve economic profitability through sustainable practices and recognizing Nebraska as a leader in agricultural innovation.

Laying the foundation: Milestones from year one

The foundation of Full Value Agriculture was laid in Kearney, Nebraska, at the Governor’s Agricultural and Economic Development Summit in August 2023. At that summit, Full Value Agriculture was introduced as an initiative that would serve as a bridge between Nebraska producers and the global demand for sustainable commodities. Pillen secured $307 million in federal funding through the state’s Priority Climate Action Plan and Implementation Grant application. This funding will provide vital resources to producers as they adopt sustainable agricultural practices and continue to contribute to Nebraska’s leadership in the agricultural sector. The collaborative effort involved leaders from agricultural organizations across the state, and we’re proud to have played a role in defining the strategy and securing these funds.

But our work didn’t stop at securing funding. Throughout the past year, we’ve engaged in critical discussions about the future of Nebraska’s agriculture. In December 2023, we convened agricultural leaders from across the state to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our producers. The conversations focused on how best to position Nebraska’s agriculture for long-term success in a rapidly changing world.

Additionally, we traveled to communities like Alliance and North Platte in early 2024 with members of the governor’s team to gather public input on Nebraska’s climate action plan. These discussions helped shape a comprehensive strategy for our state’s agricultural and energy needs, ensuring that the voices of Nebraska’s producers were at the forefront of our efforts.

As we move into our second year, the future of Full Value Agriculture is bright. We’re dedicated to continuing our mission to support Nebraska’s producers through four key pathways:

The path forward is clear. Nebraska is uniquely positioned to lead the world in sustainable agriculture, and Full Value Agriculture is here to support the producers that will make that happen. Our producers deserve recognition and fair compensation for their hard work, and we’re committed to partnering with them to ensure that happens.

Nebraska is Uniquely Positioned to Lead the World in Sustainable Agriculture

Van Keslin, of McCook, is the winner of this year’s hood decorating contest at North Platte Community College. Malaky Johnston, of Tryon, earned second, and Will Hicks, of North Platte, was third.

The competition on Thursday provided students in the Auto Body Technology program with the opportunity to learn basic collision repair skills.

The students were given the challenge of repairing and repainting damaged vehicle hoods. Their work was then voted on by students and instructors in NPCC’s other applied technology programs.

Keslin wins NPCC Hood Decorating Contest

Sutherland, Neb. - Around 30 residents of Sutherland gathered at the American Legion Hall on S. Maple Street on Thursday to celebrate Lasting Legacies, hosted by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation. The event featured a pulled pork sandwich meal, live music from Sutherland Rascal Martinez, and a presentation celebrating legacies created in Sutherland.&nbsp;

Opening remarks were made by Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation president Dan O'Neill before passing the microphone over to Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation Executive Director Eric Seacrest who hosted a 25-minute presentation highlighting different legacies that have occurred in Sutherland whether it's grant money to the school system, scholarships for students and wrapping up the presentation telling the life of John Rusell Applegate and his grant created following his passing 2003 that benefits teachers and education.&nbsp;

The Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation serves 12 counites&nbsp;(Arthur, Custer, Dawson, Frontier, Hayes, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, &amp; Thomas). During the presentation, Seacrest mentioned that the Sutherland School Foundation has received well over $20,000 in funds to benefit the school system.&nbsp;

Students in the region have plenty of opportunities to earn scholarships to help cover schooling. Over $25,000 in scholarship money was awarded to students in 15 awards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation has awarded over 151 grants totaling over $300,000 for education. Earlier this year, the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation awarded a grant to Hershey Public Schools which used the funds to bring in Justin Matott who is an anti-bullying advocate.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The John Russell Applegate&nbsp;for Teachers Training and Support Grant was created after the passing of John Russell Applegate in 2003. After his passing, he left around $2 million to the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation which created grant funds for education, teachers training, and support.&nbsp;Over the last 20 years, $2.5 million has been awarded in the form of grants or scholarships.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last year, the community foundation awarded over $300,000 in Betterment grants. Many grants/scholarships are open but get the application quickly as there are deadlines. Community members come together to celebrate Lasting Legacies of Sutherland

North Platte, Neb. - The 29th FNBO Chili Cook-Off to kick off the 2024-2025 Mid-Plains United Way campaign year was a huge success raising nearly $5000. The weather was perfect, and guests got to enjoy around 20 different booths of chili. Attendees voted for the best booth, best chili and voted for who got pied in the face.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tonight, the Mid-Plains United Way is hosting a fundraiser event at Raisin Canes in North Platte from 5:00pm-9:00pm. When ordering, make sure to let Canes know you are there for the Mid-Plains United Way fundraiser and 15% of sales will go towards the united way.&nbsp;

The event is open to the public. It will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 26. Volunteers are asked to gather in the fire pit area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

PTK announces fall Trash-a-thon

Paxton, Ne – If you’ve driven through the small town of
Paxton in Keith County this summer, you may have noticed multiple seed corn
signs south of Highway 30 on the west side of town south of town. That ground
near the Paxton Schools Bus Barn is owned by the Paxton Consolidated School
District and used to be farmed by local farmers in the area…until last year. The POST spoke with Paxton Consolidated Schools Industrial Arts Teacher Corey Turner and Sophomore Landon Drews in a sit down recently. 

Mr. Turner said that Paxton Superintendent Del Dack had come to him two years ago, "he asked me if the FFA chapter would like to farm the ground down by the Schools Barn along Highway 30. I thought it'd be an opportunity for a kid. I had a senior year plant wheat the first year, and then spring of last year I went to Landon to ask of his interest. Then last fall he went to school board and they approved him to go ahead with it and he started getting the field, cleaned up. He's gone way beyond what I thought was gonna happen with it."

Landon Drews is a sophomore at Paxton, he was only a
Freshman when he was asked about taking on this FFA project. Drews went before the Paxton School Board last fall to find out if he could get sponsors to help him plant his corn crop. He say's that was a big part of this FFA project. "&nbsp; I think that part was the most important, getting in contact that was pretty easy to do. I know most of the guys around here, you call one guy and say hey would you like to be a part of the Paxton FFA and support us and they just all wanted to be part of it. They had no worries about it. We have six different dealers that helped support us so we had Channel, DeKalb, Golden Harvest, Becks, Hoegemeyer, and Pioneer. Hi-Line Coop sprayed the corn and Harden Agency insured the crop from hail over the summer." Drews says it took them 5 1/2 hours plant that little peice of land because every time you went out, you had to come back and clean out the seed boxes on the planter.

In all it’s about 10 acres of dryland corn Drews and his
volunteers planted, Mr. Turner has used Landon’s project to teach others in his
class about putting a crop in the ground and tending to it, "I was able to take my students down. All of our FFA members got to go down and they helped clean out the planter and they got to ride in the tractor. We talked to different different dealers and they told them about the different varieties of seeds that they were putting in. So I mean that day right there was worth it to me just to get those other kids who don’t have the experience that Landon does. They don’t have the knowledge that he does in farming, and now they got some of that experience and knowledge firsthand.

On Wednesday, October 30th, Drews plans to
harvest his crop. Claas, Nebraska Harvest Center, in Ogallala is donating a combine to come pick the corn. Mr. Turner said the day will be a fun filled day for the entire Paxton School system. Elementary kids plan to come watch part of the day, his FFA and agriculture students plan to help also. Landon has also reached out to locals in the community who are donating hamburger which they cook burgers for the kids that day at the harvest site.&nbsp;

Mr. Turner says after the crop is out they plan to mill some
of the corn for feed that they’ll use to feed 3 cows the FFA tends too over the
winter, and likely they’ll put the cows out on the stocks over the winter.

Elementary kids plan to come watch part of the day, his FFA and agriculture students plan to help also. Landon has also reached out to locals in the community who are donating hamburger which they cook burgers for the kids that day at the harvest site.&nbsp;Mr. Turner says after the crop is out they plan to mill some
of the corn for feed that they’ll use to feed 3 cows the FFA tends too over the

Paxton FFA student helps turn school land into real working corn test plot (VIDEO)

October 9, 2024 (North Platte, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, has arrested three people following a pursuit and search near Gothenburg on Tuesday.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, troopers were notified that a Kia Soul was being sought in connection with a stolen property investigation in Lexington. A trooper then saw the vehicle on Interstate 80 headed westbound. The trooper attempted a traffic stop near mile marker 219. The vehicle began to slow down, but then accelerated and fled at a high rate of speed. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The Kia fled westbound, with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The driver exited I-80 at the Gothenburg interchange and began traveling north into town. The trooper discontinued the pursuit out of concern for public safety. A short time later, another trooper saw the same vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 30. Another pursuit began and the vehicle fled northbound on Road 409, west of Gothenburg. The pursuit continued until the vehicle came to a stop in a field several miles northeast of town. The two occupants then fled on foot.

Troopers and deputies utilized drones, an NSP K9, and an NSP Aircraft to search the area. The two subjects were eventually located on a nearby farmstead and were taken into custody.

The driver, Steven Conner, 37, of Omaha, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer, criminal mischief, numerous traffic violations, and outstanding warrants. The passenger, Skyanne Christensen, 24, of Omaha, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer, criminal mischief, and an outstanding warrant. Troopers discovered that a third occupant has been dropped at a farmhouse just west of Gothenburg. That person, Kayla Tatum, 29, of Omaha, was located walking along Highway 30 and arrested for obstructing a peace officer.

All three were lodged in Dawson County Jail.

Region 51 Emergency Management urges public to stay away when emergency operations are being conducted

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has received reports of two more cases of disease from insect bites - a third case of West Nile Virus (WNV) from a mosquito bite and one case of tularemia from a tick bite. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Nebraska has seen more tularemia cases than usual this fall.

“We are still seeing insect-related diseases in the health district,” explains Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “It is a good idea to continue using bug spray until the first hard freeze, and use permethrin on tents and camping gear to prevent tick bites.”

SWNPHD worked with Nebraska Department of Health and Humans Services (DHHS) doing tick drags over the summer&nbsp;to help identify which ticks are living in the health district. Tick dragging is a method for collecting ticks in areas that are likely to have ticks, such as woods, tall grasses, or weeds. The most common type of tick in southwest Nebraska is the American Dog Tick.&nbsp; These ticks are known to carry Tularemia and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Tularemia is caused by a bacteria that gets into the body when someone is bitten by an infected tick. It can also be spread by contact with infected animals like rabbits or rodents. The symptoms are fever, headache, swollen glands in the armpit or groin, and skin ulcers at the site of the bite. Tularemia can be life-threatening, but most infections are treated successfully with antibiotics. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop symptoms after being bitten by a tick.

North Platte, NE – The City of North Platte has announced that it has dismissed the&nbsp; condemnation proceedings against the Pawnee Hotel, owned by HPNP, LLC. The decision&nbsp; follows productive discussions with Mr. Jay Mitchell, the owner of HPNP, LLC.&nbsp;

To ensure the safety and integrity of the historic building, the City and Mr. Mitchell have agreed to conduct a comprehensive building inspection before the end of October 2024. The inspection will assess the property’s condition and identify any necessary action on the property owner’s&nbsp; behalf, as required by the International Property Maintenance Code, 2018 Edition, as adopted&nbsp; by the City.&nbsp;

The City of North Platte values the Pawnee Hotel’s significance as a local landmark and is&nbsp; committed to progress by working collaboratively with Mr. Mitchell to preserve its historic&nbsp; character. OMAHA, NEBRASKA — During Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12), the American Red Cross of Nebraska reminds everyone home fires claim more lives in a typical year than all natural disasters combined. To help protect your household, test your smoke alarms each month and practice your escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes.

To help protect your household, test your smoke alarms each month and practice your escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes.“Fire now travels faster through homes, largely due to popular open-concept layouts and synthetic materials,” said Josh Murray, Red Cross of Nebraska spokesperson. “The sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get out.  <li>Everyone in your household should know&nbsp;two&nbsp;ways to escape from each room in your home.</li><li>Smoke is dangerous. Get low and go!</li><li>Decide where to meet once you get outside. Select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as a neighbor’s home or landmark like a specific tree in your front yard, where everyone knows to meet.</li><li>Get out and stay out. Never go back inside for people, pets or things.</li><li>If a fire starts, you may have less than&nbsp;two minutes&nbsp;to get to safety. (October 7, 2024) Lexington, Neb. – At the October 2nd meeting, Dawson Public Power District’s board learned that its irrigation customers experienced less load management than in previous years.

Of the 66 hours of possible irrigation control, Dawson PPD’s anytime option irrigation customers averaged 50 hours of irrigation load management for the 2024 growing season. Most irrigation customers subscribe to the anytime rate, which means they allow their irrigation well to be shut off at any time and on any day of the week. By working together, Dawson PPD and its irrigation customers help keep overall wholesale power costs low.

Dawson PPD’s electrical grid peaked in demand at 209 megawatts in 2024. In 2023, it was 252 MW.

“At Dawson PPD, we take a unique approach to our irrigation load management to benefit our customers,” said Cole Brodine, Manager of Engineering. “Our Board votes on a certain load threshold at the beginning of the irrigation year. This number is determined by historical data and wholesale power costs. When electrical use increases on a summer control day, we slowly shut off irrigation wells to keep Dawson PPD’s overall electrical demand under the threshold. As electrical usage decreases in the evening, we start to slowly turn irrigation wells back on to allow load up to the threshold or until our wholesale provider, Nebraska Public Power District, cancels load management for the day.”

Safety and Loss Prevention Coordinator Dean Kunkee provided a summary of Dawson PPD’s Loss Analysis for 2023. Animals and birds caused about $42,800 in damage to the District’s substations in 2023.

 <li>State Senators Teresa Ibach and Mike Jacobson spoke with Dawson PPD Board Members about the special session and current issues, and requested feedback from the board on issues they feel need to be addressed.</li><li>Dawson PPD’s revenue is 3% under budget and 6% less than last year. Total operating costs are 4% under budget and 3% less than last year. Net Margin is $388K under budget.</li><li>The Board reviewed the preliminary 2025 budget, which is subject to change. They plan to vote on the final budget at the November 6 Board Meeting.</li><li>Operations Manager Jeremy Kaiser updated the Board on the restoration process of the September 25 power line and structure loss caused by a helicopter. The helicopter operator was spraying phragmites in the Platte River near Darr Road and Interstate 80 when it contacted the transmission power lines strung over the river. The impact caused the transmission lines and its poles to fall from the river, across Darr Road, and over the Interstate. More than 1,000 meters were without power for about 2 hours. Power has been rerouted to customers by nearby substations. Dawson PPD is gathering necessary replacement materials and coordinating with the State of Nebraska to re-string the power lines over Interstate 80.&nbsp;</li><li>Pad mount transformers ordered in 2021 are starting to arrive. They had been delayed by supply chain and quality control issues.</li><li>Board members Brad Brodine and Dan Muhlbach, and employees Gwen Kautz and Cole Brodine attended the Nebraska Generation &amp; Transmission Board Meeting September 11-12.</li><li>General Manager Gwen Kautz attended the Nebraska Rural Electric Association Manager’s Meeting and Legal Seminar September 17-18. The Legal Seminar focused on public meeting and information basics to ensure that all public power districts understand their obligations.</li><li>Kautz also reported on the status of contract negotiations with NPPD and general information about a bid submitted to The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District about purchasing 20 MW of hydropower from Jeffrey Hydro.</li><li>Board member Brad Brodine attended the September Safety Meeting on September 18. He reported that he was impressed with employees conducting themselves during the Pole Top Rescue and Fire Extinguisher Trainings.</li><li>Board members Pat Hecox, Page Peterson and Roger White attended the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Region 7 Meeting September 24-26. The board members reported information gained at the meetings and breakout sessions.</li>
