NORTH PLATTE - Great Plains Health in North Platte is offering a free Osteoporosis screening this Saturday, Oct. 21st from 8am - 12pm. The event is taking place at the Great Plains Health Conference Center in North Platte. The event is for anyone over the age of 50 and no registration is required.

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Marcus Taylor about the upcoming Trevin Jeffs &amp; Travis Roberts Benefit event this upcoming Saturday.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Trevin Jeffs and Travis Roberts Benefit will be taking place this Saturday from 12pm - 2pm at Budke Powersports in North Platte. The event is a chili feed and silent auction with a variety of auction items being donated from business around the community. The event is $10 per person. All proceeds will go to the families of Jeffs and Roberts.&nbsp;

Jeffs and Roberts were both injured in a motorcycle accident on Oct. 8th. Both riders sustained broken bones and other injuries. Jeffs and Roberts are a part of a group of riders here in North Platte and the idea of the benefit came during a discussion in the riders group chat. This will be one of several benefits for these gentlemen.&nbsp;

The two riders sustained severe injuries from the wreck and all proceeds collected at the benefit will go to the riders' families. "All the proceeds are going to be split evenly between the families to help cover these medical expenses and some of the expenses to get back and forth between here and Omaha where both of these gentlemen are currently recovering at," said Marcus Taylor.&nbsp;

Smith recaps the FNBO Chili Cook-Off and gives us a more in-depth looking into Mid-Plains United Way. Hipp talks about the mentoring program at the Community Connections&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way kicked off their 2023-2024 campaign with the 28th Annual FNBO Chili Cook-Off. For this year's event, over 240 people attended and almost $4,000 was raised. The event this year raised $500 more than last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mid-Plains United Way supports 11 non-profits and serves in a 16-county region. "The non-profits provide services and programs that improve education and health and finical stability for people in need," said Mid-Plains United Way Executive Director Haven Smith.&nbsp;

One of these organizations that is supported by the Mid-Plains United Way is Community Connections of Lincoln County. Community Connections is a non-profit that matches youths with mentors. Many of the youths will be matched up with mentors that have very similar skill sets.&nbsp;

Teammates is another program that matches youth with mentors. However, Community Connections has a slightly different approach than Teammates. "Well just that, you know (Teammates) school based, there meeting at the school at a set time each week. There are kids who need maybe some mentoring outside of the school," said Mentoring Coordinator Angela Hipp. "We think the relationship can really flourish when they are able to go do that."&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE – The 21st annual G.R.E.E.N. fundraising event for the North Platte Catholic Schools is planned for Saturday, October 21st at St. Patrick High School. Generating Resources for Educational Excellence Now is the largest single event of the year for the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust, which works year-round to generate around $600,000 for McDaid and St. Patrick’s schools.&nbsp; 

Endowment Director Wendy Dodson says that this year’s event will feature all of the things that supporters have loved about G.R.E.E.N. over the years… A delicious meal, an online silent auction, Heads or Tails game, Lucky Lotto drawing, live auction, and Spirit Wagon raffle. Plus, guests may also try their hand at the Wall of Wine and the Wall of Whiskey and enjoy some fun entertainment with the Polka Police.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dodson says that since the G.R.E.E.N. event began in 2003, it has generated over $2.1 million dollars in&nbsp; support of the North Platte Catholic Schools. These funds have been used to establish a teacher&nbsp; retirement fund, support general operations of McDaid and St. Patrick’s, fund school improvement&nbsp; projects and technology, and to provide tuition assistance for families.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Rock Church in North Platte is hosting their annual RocktoberFest this Saturday beginning at 5:30 at the Rock Church. The event will have family friendly activities, chili and cinnamon rolls, live music, pumpkin painting, and so much more. The event is free for anyone to attend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This event initially started off as a chili cookoff before being switched to something fun and new. "It started out as a chili cookoff in our church, and we wanted to show North Platte how much we love our community," said Rock Church Senior Pastor Vaughn Fahrenbruck. "Were very for North Platte, very for our community and decide let's open it up to the entire city." The Rock Church wanted to find ways to expand their chili cookoff and get the community involved and that's how RocktoberFest was created. "We wanted to make it as a popup pumpkin patch and let's make it fun and let's make it free," said Vaughn.&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath caught up with Ashley Lewis from the Connection Homeless Shelter for their monthly conversation. This time, the two talked about the Out of the Box Challenge the Connection Homeless Shelter is hosting.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Connection Homeless Shelter is hosting a fundraiser event called the Out of the Box Challenge. The shelter wants to invite local businesses, emergency personnel services, or just anyone who wants to form a team and take part in the challenge. The Connection Shelter would like to have business show off their boxes from November 13th-16th which is Hunger/Homeless Awareness Month. The final day of the event is November 16th at Brigham's Taproom where the teams can show off their box and have members vote for who has the best box. There is a registration fee of $200 per team.&nbsp;

The idea of the challenge is to grab a box and build a house out of it. The fundraiser event is to help raise money for the homeless shelter. There are dimension rules on the box which have to be 4x4x4. If you would like to learn more about the event, check out the podcast above. &nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath talked with Mid-Plains United Way Executive Director Haven Smith about the 28th Annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by First National Bank of Omaha.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The 28th Annual Chili Cook-Off hosted by First National Bank of Omaha fundraiser event is set for October 6th from 11:30am - 1:30pm in the downtown parking lot of FNBO in North Platte. The event is the official kick off for the 2023-2024 Mid-Plains United Way campaign season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FNBO is hosting the event while all the proceeds made from this event will go to Mid-Plain United Way. "This is the 28th annual and it's presented by First National Bank of Omaha and Mid-Plains United Way is super grateful for them (FNBO) to be hosting this for us," said Executive Director Haven Smith. "They provide the event and all the proceeds come back to Mid-Plains United Way." The money raised will be used to help support non-profit organizations in the region.&nbsp;

15 teams have signed up for this year's cook-off and it only cost $10 to get into the event. You can try all the chilis and see which team may have the best. The event is October 6th at the downtown FNBO parking lot from 11:30am - 1:30pm. The weather is looking more on the chilly side for Friday. Post's Derek Beck chatted with Autumn Schleicher from the Nebraska Department of Labor about how the last month of September is National Employee Older Workers Week and the Nebraska Department of Labor has programs for older workers to join their team.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The last week of September is dedicated as National Employee Older Workers Week and the week encourages employers to hire older workers to join their team. The Nebraska Department of Labor is always offering programs for workers 55 and older who want to get back into the work field. The Nebraska Department of Labor offers what's called the Senior Community Service Employment Program. The program is targeted at workers who are 55 and older, are unemployed and maybe looking to start a new career path. The program runs year-round but is limited spots.&nbsp;

If you are interested in joining the Senior Community Service Employment Program, you can contact the Nebraska Department of Labor office at (308)-535-8320 or you can go to their office building in North Platte. NORTH PLATTE - The Lincoln County Raceway is hosting their first ever Valve Cover Races on October 28th. The event geared towards a driver teaming up with 4-5 kids and competing in the races. The drivers will be the kid's mentors throughout the whole event from getting together to working on getting ready for the valve cover races and being a role model for their team.&nbsp;

Kids will receive a T-Shirt with their name and team name on it that they can wear to the day of the races. It is free for kids to participate in the event. Registration ends on October 1st. Branden and James are a cello and vocal due that travel around the United States and perform at concerts and events. Effie Passero is a singer who joins Branden and James at times when performing at events and concerts.&nbsp;

The event is taking place at the Ogallala Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the event cost $15 for adults and $7 for students. Podcast - End Of Summer Block Party for Elderly Ogallala Residents

North Platte/Sandhills Post News Director Canon Rath caught up with 4-H'er Ezri Bay and 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson about the 4-H Dog Skillathon category.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - 4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program. A unique category is Dog Skillathon.&nbsp;

The Dog Skillathon contest is an opportunity that 4-H'rs can patriciate and test their knowledge of dogs. "It's a giant mess test and it's kind of interesting and so you walk in this big room and there's a whole bunch of tables with different activities," said 4-H'er Ezri Bay. "They hand you a test and you go to one of the tables and at each table there's like questions and photos that go with you questions and you have to answer those."&nbsp;

The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. There are many different categories that 4-H'ers can participate in during their time in the program. A unique category is Dog Skillathon.&nbsp;</p><p>The Dog Skillathon contest is an opportunity that 4-H'rs can patriciate and test their knowledge of dogs. "It's a giant mess test and it's kind of interesting and so you walk in this big room and there's a whole bunch of tables with different activities," said 4-H'er Ezri Bay. "They hand you a test and you go to one of the tables and at each table there's like questions and photos that go with you questions and you have to answer those."&nbsp;</p><p>Dogs Skillathon has many different aspects during competition. North Platte Post News Director Canon Rath talked with Paul Oettinger about the upcoming 5th Annual Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival this Saturday at Pals Brewing Company in North Platte.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Pals Brewing Company in North Platte will be the host site of the 5th Annual Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival going on this Saturday from 4pm - 8pm (if you have a VIP ticket, the event runs from 3pm - 8 pm). The event features many vendors from across the state of Nebraska, the Pals food menu and different types of BBQ will be offered. Live music will be playing during the event.&nbsp;

The 5th Annual Western Nebraska Craft Beer Festival highlights brewers on the western side of the state but the event is welcome to all brewers in the state of Nebraska. "It's really a celebration of Western Nebraska craft beer," said Paul Oettinger. "Really it's for the whole state of Nebraska, we have couple Omaha breweries and a Norfolk brewery coming this year and we have about 10 or 12 of the Western Nebraska breweries that are going to be there”.&nbsp;

The event will feature a fruit beer where folks will try the fruit beers and vote on their favorite. At the end of the event, the winner will be announced. It will be a blind vote. Tickets to the event are still available. VIP tickets are sold out, but GA tickets are still available. Advanced tickets are $35, and at the door are $40. North Platte Post News Director talked with Nebraska State Education President Jenni Benson about the Support Our Schools campaign.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB. - The Support Our Schools campaign have been out gathering signatures the past 90 days&nbsp;to try to get the bill LB 753 on the 2024 ballot so Nebraska votes can vote on the bill. LB753 is the opportunity scholarship act and commits $50 million in tax credits for scholarships to kids across Nebraska with priority for scholarships going to kids who live in poverty, foster care, experience bullying, harassment, or other victimizing behaviors, or have a parent or guardian who is serving in the military.&nbsp;

Support our schools is against the bill as they favor public tax dollars should stay with public schools, not private schools. OGALLALA, NEB. - Second Chapter Brewing in Ogallala is hosting a Pop-Up Party this Sunday from 12 pm - 6 pm mountain time. The event, which is free to the public and family friend will offer vendors, brew sampling, and a food truck will be in attendance.&nbsp;

The event is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs to get together and support the community. "As entrepreneurs ourselves, we really want to support the local community and help other entrepreneurs to get there works in front of a different audience," said Lisa Kraus. "This will be a lot of fun and their will be something for everyone at the brewery and it's going to be a great day labor day weekend.

The Pop-Up Party at Second Chapter Brewing in Ogallala will be from 12 pm - 6 pm this Sunday. The brewery is located at 203 West A Street in Ogallala.
