Nebraska opened play in the Big Ten Tournament with a 15-2 loss vs. Ohio State on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.

Nebraska (34-20) scored two runs on four hits, while Ohio State (29-24) totaled 15 runs on 15 hits.

Josh Caron went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, while Dylan Carey had a 1-for-3 night with an RBI single. Gabe Swansen and Garrett Anglim recorded a double each for the Husker offense.

Jackson Brockett dropped to 2-2 on the season, surrendering three runs on seven hits in three innings. The southpaw struck out three Buckeyes without issuing a free pass. Bobby Olsen and Caleb Clark combined for one inning in relief.

Tucker Timmerman worked a scoreless inning, while Ty Horn picked up four strikeouts in two hitless innings.

Ohio State took the first lead of the night with a pair of runs behind three hits in the second inning. A solo homer into the Husker bullpen broke the scoreless tie, while a two-out RBI double doubled the advantage to 2-0 through two innings.

A trio of hits in the third added another run for the Buckeyes, while an eight-run frame in the fourth extended the lead to 11.

Nebraska plated its first run of the night with Caron’s solo home run to right-center in the bottom of the fourth.

The Buckeyes tacked on four more runs in the fifth to build the lead to 15-1, while the Huskers scored their second run with Carey’s RBI single to left field.

Horn struck out a pair of Buckeyes in the top of the seventh to pick up his third and fourth strikeouts of the game to preserve the shutout two-inning performance.

NU had a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the seventh after Anglim’s pinch-hit one-out double and a two-out walk to Rhett Stokes, but the Huskers couldn’t cut into the deficit, leading to Ohio State’s 15-2 run-rule win in seven innings on Tuesday night.

Huskers fall vs. Buckeyes on Tuesday

Nebraska track and field will have 53 entries competing at the NCAA West Preliminary Round this week at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark.

Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective events earned berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round, as well as the 24 best relay times.

At the NCAA West Preliminary Round, the top 12 competitors from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted in Eugene, Ore. The list of qualifiers from each event contested in the first rounds will be announced by 4 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, May 26. The final list of the championships competition participants will be announced by 2 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday, May 28.

The four-day regional meet will have the men compete on Wednesday and Friday, while the women will compete on Thursday and Saturday.&nbsp;

Huskers look to NCAA West Preliminary Round

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;The 15th-ranked&nbsp;Nebraska-Kearney&nbsp;women’s tennis team rallied to take the doubles point and won three singles matches in straight sets to down 23rd-ranked Azusa (Calif.) Pacific,&nbsp;<a href="https://lopers.com/sports/womens-tennis/stats/2023-24/-23-azusa-pacific-ca-/boxscore/7993" target="_blank">4-1</a>, Monday morning in an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncaa.com/brackets/tennis-women/d2/2024" target="_blank">NCAA Tournament Sweet 16</a>&nbsp;match in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The eighth-seeded Lopers (21-5) advance to the Elite 8 for the first time in program history where they’ll face top-seed and six-time defending national champion Barry, Fla. (21-4). The match is set to start at 3 p.m. Central Tuesday with temps expected to be in the high 90's.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.statbroadcast.com/events/statbroadcast.php?t=1&amp;gid=roll" target="_blank">Live results</a>&nbsp;will be available with live video starting in the Final Four.&nbsp;Back in February at the Ernest Grundy Tennis Center in&nbsp;Kearney, the BU Buccaneers downed the Lopers, 5-1, in an ITA National Team Indoor Championships dual. Barry also won a 2023 match between the two, 4-0.&nbsp;To hand APU (21-3) just its third loss of the season, UNK had to dig themselves out of a doubles hole. OMAHA, Neb. —&nbsp;From preseason favorites to first-ever champions, the&nbsp;Omaha Supernovas&nbsp;(18-8) swept the Grand Rapids Rise (13-13) 25-13, 26-24, 25-22 Saturday in front of 10,678 to become the inaugural PVF Champions.&nbsp;

Saturday marked the third sweep in the month of May for the Supernovas. Omaha had three sweeps combined in the previous three months.&nbsp;

During the trophy presentation, Supernovas setter&nbsp;Sydney Hilley&nbsp;was awarded the&nbsp;Postseason MVP&nbsp;and a $10,000 bonus as the Wisconsin graduate came off the bench to guide the Omaha offense to two victories. Hilley dished out 40 assists and six digs in the three sets as the Supernovas hit .342 for their second-highest hitting percentage of the season. That was after handing out 46 assists and nine digs in the reverse sweep over San Diego in the semifinals.&nbsp;

Olympian&nbsp;Bethania de la Cruz&nbsp;paced the Omaha attackers with 13 kills on a .423 clip to go with eight digs and her league-leading 35th ace of the season.&nbsp;Stephanie Samedy&nbsp;matched her teammate with 13 kills on a .346 hitting percentage including one ace and one block. Samedy finished the postseason with 43 total kills on a .391 clip in two matches with 13 digs, three blocks and two aces. Team captain&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;was third Supernovas player to reach double-digit kills with 12 along with 15 digs.&nbsp;

Middle blockers&nbsp;Hristina Vuchkova&nbsp;and&nbsp;Tori Dixon&nbsp;combined for 12 kills on a .550 clip and five blocks. Vuchkova hit .750 with seven kills and one error on eight swings. She tallied a match-high three blocks. Dixon had no hitting errors with five kills on 12 swings. She earned a pair of blocks. Libero&nbsp;Kendall White&nbsp;finished her season with nine digs and two assists.&nbsp;

Omaha recorded two aces along with seven blocks.&nbsp;

Grand Rapids was led by star attackers Claire Chaussee and Emiliya Dimitrova. Chaussee totaled 12 kills and seven digs while Dimitrova also recorded 12 kills and 11 digs in her final professional volleyball match.&nbsp;

Set 1:&nbsp;The Supernovas started the set with a 4-0 run behind the serve of de la Cruz. Nuneviller’s second kill of the match doubled the Omaha lead at 8-4. The Supernovas put three consecutive points on the board to force a Rise timeout at 13-6. Dimitrova sided out for the Rise. De la Cruz recorded her first ace serve of the match for a 16-8 Omaha lead. Nuneviller’s fifth kill got Omaha to the 20-point mark first. Samedy served up an ace for a 23-10 lead and forced a Grand Rapids timeout. The Rise took the two points out of the timeout, but a Nuneviller kill gave Omaha a set point. De la Cruz ended the set with a kill at 25-13. “I feel like my head is still spinning. I can't really explain what happened this morning,” Scheffler said after remarkably posting another 5-under 66 that kept him in the mix for a second straight major championship.

He said he could not offer specifics on the arrest because it was under investigation. In a statement released before his round, he said never intended to disregard police instructions outside the entrance to the club.

“I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times for sure,” Scheffler said. “I was grateful to be able to go out there and compete and yeah, it was definitely a nice round of golf.”

His attorney, Steve Romines in Louisville, also described it as a misunderstanding and told The Associated Press, “We will litigate the case as it goes.”

Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said tournament vendor John Mills was the pedestrian killed and offered sympathies to his family. Greenberg also said the incident involving Scheffler and LMPD was “unfortunate” and that the police department was investigating.

Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road that leads to Valhalla in the morning darkness with light rain, with dozens of police vehicles flashing red-and-blue lights near the entrance.

Police approached the long line of cars waiting to say a pedestrian had been struck by a bus while crossing the road in a lane that was dedicated to tournament traffic.

Mills, 69, was working for a PGA Championship vendor. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 5:09 a.m.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident and said Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world who was to start the second round at 8:48 a.m., drove past a police officer a little after 6 a.m. in his SUV with markings on the door indicating it was a PGA Championship vehicle.

The officer screamed at him to stop and then grabbed onto the car until Scheffler stopped about 10 yards later, Darlington said. The officer, identified in the arrest report as Det. Gillis, was dragged “to the ground” and suffered “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after the car “accelerated forward,” according to Louisville police.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. In addition to the assault charge, he was booked on charges of third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

“The main thing is he was proceeding exactly as he was directed in a marked vehicle with credentials," Romines said. “He didn’t do anything intentionally wrong.”

The officer was dressed in a high visibility reflective jacket when he stopped Scheffler’s car to give instructions, the arrest sheet said. Gillis was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

Darlington said police pulled Scheffler out of the car, pushed him up against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’" Darlington said. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

Scheffler was released by police and returned to the course at 9:12 a.m. He made his way to the practice area around 9:30 a.m. and was welcomed by fans — one shouted “free Scottie!” and others arrived later wearing “Free Scottie” T-shirts.

Scheffler seemed like his normal, relaxed self, sharing a few laughs on the driving range.

“I was never angry. I was just in shock,” Scheffler said. “I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me.”

He could see from a TV in the jail that tee times were pushed back 1 hour, 20 minutes because of the traffic situation, and realized when an officer knocked on the door and said, “Let's go,” that he had a chance to play.

He made birdie on his first hole of the day after sticking his approach shot to 3 feet.

Darlington, the ESPN reporter, said police were not sure who Scheffler was at first. He said an officer asked him to leave and when he identified himself being with the media, he was told, “There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.”

Darlington said another police officer later approached with a notepad and asked if he knew the name of the person they put in handcuffs.

Scheffler said he never told police who he was except to say, “I'm sorry, I'm just trying to get to my tee time.”

Louisville police have attracted negative national attention in recent years after the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in 2020 and a federal investigation into its policing practices.

A Department of Justice report released last year said Louisville officers use excessive force and conduct searches based on invalid warrants. The report said Black motorists in Louisville were more likely to be searched during traffic stops, and officers used neck restraints, police dogs and Tasers against people who posed no imminent threat.

Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman, was shot by officers in who had come to her apartment with a warrant that federal officials later said was falsified.

PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship, offered sympathies for Mills' family and said in a statement, “As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place.”

Scheffler is coming off four victories in his last five tournaments, including his second Masters title. He was home in Dallas the last three weeks waiting on the birth of his first child, a son that was born May 8.

Scheffler, who has won four of his last five tournaments, is trying to become only the fifth player since 1960 to win the first two majors of the year.

Ogallala Senior legion baseball radio/livestream coverage tonight against North Platte

Former NCAA National Champion and 11-time All-American Elizabeth “Liz” Schmeltzer has been named the eighth head coach of the University of Nebraska rifle program, Athletic Director Troy Dannen announced Thursday.

“When we were looking for someone to lead our rifle program, we wanted someone who understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels in the sport,” Dannen said. “Liz has a proven background as an 11-time All-American who has won individual and team national championships and has represented Team USA. She has worked with some of the best shooters in the sport since moving into the coaching ranks, and I believe she can continue to build on the success that Nebraska rifle has enjoyed in recent seasons.”

“I am very excited to be joining the Husker rifle program,” Schmeltzer said. “I think my experience as an athlete and coach will help this team grow. I am looking forward to working with the athletes and helping them achieve their goals.”

Schmeltzer comes to Lincoln after serving as a coach for Team Winning Solution in Colorado Springs, Colo., for the past two and a half years. In that role, she worked under two-time Olympian Lucas Kozeniesky helping coach elite-level shooters to prepare them for the collegiate ranks. Schmeltzer has coached athletes who have reached the finals in Junior Olympic meets as well as international matches.

Schmeltzer was a decorated athlete during her collegiate career, helping TCU to an NCAA team title in 2019 and top-three finishes in both 2018 and 2021. TCU qualified for the NCAA Championship all four seasons Schmeltzer was at the school.

As a senior, she qualified for the finals at the NCAA Championship in both disciplines, finishing fifth in the smallbore and sixth in the air rifle while earning first-team All-America honors in smallbore and second-team accolades in air rifle and aggregate. She ranked&nbsp;sixth nationally in smallbore average (586.6) and aggregate average (1,180.9) and seventh in air rifle average (594.3).&nbsp;Schmeltzer turned&nbsp;in a career-high 1,187 aggregate score (591 smallbore; 596 air rifle) at the NCAA Championships.

During her junior season, TCU was unable to defend its NCAA title because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but&nbsp;she was fifth in the NCAA in smallbore average and 11th in aggregate average en route to a pair of All-American certificates.

Schmeltzer helped lead TCU to its first national title in seven years in 2019, when she won an individual NCAA title in the smallbore. She shot in all 15 matches and ranked sixth nationally in smallbore, eighth in average aggregate and 14th in air rifle. As a freshman, she made an immediate impact in helping TCU to a third-place showing at the NCAA Championships. For her efforts, Schmeltzer was a second-team All-American in air rifle and claimed third-team honors in aggregate.

In addition to her college experience, Schmeltzer has competed for Team USA Shooting in international competitions, including the 2018 ISSF World Shooting Championships, where she helped Team USA to a silver medal in the smallbore and a bronze in the prone. She also shot for Team USA in the Hopes Match in 2018, where she won a gold medal in the smallbore and at the 2015 Pan American games, where she was a finalist in the air rifle. Schmeltzer will also be competing for Team USA in the upcoming 2024 World Cup event in Munich, Germany, from June 1-7 before coming to Lincoln.

Nebraska track and field earned 53 bids to the NCAA West Preliminary Round, set for May 22-25 at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark.

Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective events earned berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Round, as well as the 24 best relay times.At the NCAA West Preliminary Round, the top 12 competitors from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted in Eugene, Ore. The list of qualifiers from each event contested in the first rounds will be announced by 4 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, May 26. Huskers earn 53 Regional Bids on Thursday

Strong outings on the mound from Brett Sears and Caleb Clark led Nebraska to a 2-1 win at Michigan State on Thursday night at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.

Nebraska (33-18, 15-7 B1G) totaled two runs on eight hits, while Michigan State (23-26, 10-12 B1G) tallied one run on seven hits and an error.

Ben Columbus led the Big Red at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Joshua Overbeek had two hits with a double and an RBI, while Rhett Stokes was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Case Sanderson recorded a hit, while Tyler Stone scored the Huskers’ other run of the night.

Sears moved to 8-0 on the season, becoming just the second pitcher in program history to reach an 8-0 record in a season since 1999. Before Thursday night, Brian Duensing was the lone NU hurler to record the feat after beginning the 2005 campaign with an 8-0 mark.

Sears recorded his 11th quality start of the season after allowing one run on six hits in 6.2 innings of work. The senior struck out four Spartans and issued just one walk. Clark picked up his first save of the year, dealing 2.1 shutout innings in relief. The southpaw allowed just one hit while posting a strikeout and a walk.

After back-to-back singles to begin the bottom half of the first inning, Michigan State struck first on a sacrifice fly to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Both teams went scoreless in the second frame before Nebraska knotted the game at one with consecutive doubles down the right-field line. Stokes laced the first pitch down the right-field line, while Overbeek traded places with him for his 18th RBI of the season from the leadoff spot.

The Huskers put runners on first and second base after a walk to Stone and Evans was hit on an 0-1 offering. Columbus broke the tie with an RBI single to right field to put the Big Red up 2-1 in the fourth inning.

Sears worked around a one-out single in the fifth, while a double play in the bottom of the sixth extinguished a leadoff single from the Spartans in the inning to preserve the one-run advantage for the Big Red.

Singles from Overbeek and Sanderson, followed by a four-pitch walk to Josh Caron loaded the bases for the Husker offense with two outs in the seventh, but the Big Red couldn’t get the timely hit to build on to the lead.

A one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh put the tying run on base for the Spartans. Clark replaced Sears with two outs in the inning and induced a flyout to right field on a play where Garrett Anglim made a sprinting, full-extension catch while climbing the hill in front of the right-field fence.

Clark surrendered a double in the eighth and a walk in the ninth, but the sophomore kept the Spartans off the board in the final two innings to clinch the 2-1 win for the Huskers on Thursday night.
