B-6 District Track Results & State Qualifiers

ESPN announced Tuesday afternoon that Nebraska’s season-opening matchup with Cincinnati in Kansas City on Thursday, Aug. 28, will be televised on ESPN with kickoff set for 8 p.m. Central.&nbsp;

The Huskers and Bearcats will square off at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Nebraska’s first contest in the stadium since the 2006 Big 12 Championship game and NU’s first regular-season game in Kansas City since 1998. The matchup was originally scheduled as a Cincinnati home game before being moved to a neutral site. It marks just the second all-time meeting between the schools and the first since a 1906 matchup in Lincoln.

The matchup with Cincinnati in Kansas City marks Nebraska’s second neutral-site opener in four seasons after opening the 2022 season against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland.&nbsp; It also marks the fourth time in the past five seasons Nebraska has opened the season either in Week Zero or on a Thursday night. Nebraska opened the 2023 season at Minnesota in a Thursday night contest.

Tuesday’s announcement is the first kickoff time set for the Huskers’ 2025 season. Additional game times and television designations for the upcoming season are expected to be announced by the end of May.

Huskers Open Under The Lights At Arrowhead In Season Opener

A Nebraska native with a long, successful history as a professional player, Marissa Kastanek will join the Nebraska women's basketball program as a graduate assistant manager for the 2025-26 season, Husker Head Coach Amy Williams announced on Monday, May 12.

“Marissa is a home run hire for our program," Williams said. "Our student-athletes can lean into her vast playing experience both collegiately and professionally.&nbsp; We have seen her utilize her positive, upbeat teaching style while coaching at many of our summer camps. We are excited to add her to our Husker family!”

Kastanek produced an impressive 12-year professional career in Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Puerto Rico following a decorated college career at North Carolina State (2009-13). She also competed for the Polish National Team. She graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 2009, after competing her first two seasons at Crete High School.

Kastanek was a starting guard for VBW Arka Gdynia in Poland in 2024-25, averaging 9.6 points and 2.5 assists per game. She led Gdynia to a 15-3 record and a league championship in the Poland-OLBK. She also played in eight EuroCup games in 2024-25. Kastanek played continuously in Poland from 2015 to 2025, including her final six seasons with VBW Arka Gdynia.

"I am so excited to announce that I will be a Husker," Kastanek said. "I am so thankful to Coach Williams and the University for allowing me to step in and be a part of something special. I am so excited to share what I have learned over the years with the next generation of players. I could not think of a better place to start the next chapter of my life. Go Big Red!"

A four-year starter at NC State, Kastanek was a first-team All-ACC selection on the court for the Wolfpack after earning honorable-mention All-ACC accolades as both a sophomore and a junior. She was the 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American while helping the Wolfpack to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. She was also a first-team ACC All-Tournament pick as a junior in 2012, while claiming a second-team ACC All-Tournament selection as a freshman in 2010.

She capped her college career as the HC Kennett Award winner presented annually to NC State's top athlete. She was also the runner-up in the 2013 State Farm 3-Point Championship at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Atlanta.

The 5-9 guard ranks among the top-10 scorers in North Carolina State history, coming in ninth with 1,655 points with 131 starts over 133 games for the Wolfpack, averaging 12.4 points per game over her career. She hit 240 career three-pointers (.359), while connecting on 80.3 percent of her free throws. She added 499 rebounds, 203 assists and 172 steals in her career.

A star in the classroom as well, Kastanek was a first-team CSC Academic All-American as a senior in 2013, after earning second-team Academic All-America honors in 2012. She was also a two-time ACC Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2012, 2013).&nbsp; A three-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, Kastanek also earned NCAA and ACC postgraduate scholarships. She majored in psychology with minors in coaching, sports science and Spanish at NC State, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

Kastanek also represented the United States at the 2011 Pan Am Games, averaging 5.8 points over four games for Team USA in Guadalajara, Mexico. She tied for the team lead with six three-pointers.

Kastanek founded the WISDOM Fellowship for professional players in Europe in 2019, which continues to do charitable work around the globe.

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;The 22nd-ranked Nebraska Kearney women's tennis team picked up the program's 10th NCAA Tournament win after a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://lopers.com/sports/womens-tennis/stats/2024-25/central-oklahoma/boxscore/8385">5-1 decision</a>&nbsp;over Central Oklahoma Monday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.Seeded third in the Central Region, the Lopers (19-5) advance to take on second seed and No. 14 Washburn (17-3) Tuesday at noon. The winner advances to the "Sweet 16" in Florida May 19-23; the 'Bods downed the UNK, 4-3, earlier this season in Kearney.&nbsp;

This was the third straight meeting with UCO (14-6) as the two teams met in the regular season finale in Edmond, then played in the MIAA Tournament semifinals a week later in Springfield, Mo. The Lopers won in Oklahoma, 5-2, but the 'Chos turned the tables in Missouri, 4-2 and then won the following day to take the title and earn the MIAA's auto bid to the championships.&nbsp;Today, UNK reversed course from that dual by winning the doubles point. The winner advances to the "Sweet 16" in Florida May 19-23; the 'Bods downed the UNK, 4-3, earlier this season in Kearney.&nbsp;This was the third straight meeting with UCO (14-6) as the two teams met in the regular season finale in Edmond, then played in the MIAA Tournament semifinals a week later in Springfield, Mo. The Lopers won in Oklahoma, 5-2, but the 'Chos turned the tables in Missouri, 4-2 and then won the following day to take the title and earn the MIAA's auto bid to the championships.&nbsp;Today, UNK reversed course from that dual by winning the doubles point. Huskers in the PollsIn this week’s USTFCCCA rankings, the Nebraska track and field team saw both the men and women inside the top 25. The Husker men are ranked fourth, and the women are ranked 19th.The men lead the nation in the high jump, javelin and decathlon event groups, and are top 10 in the discus, long jump, hammer and shot put. For the women, they top the high jump and javelin rankings, while second in shot put, sixth in pole vault and seventh in both discus and long jump.

Nebraska track and field’s Steinforth was announced as the Big Ten Men’s Field Athlete of the Week by the conference office.

Steinforth, a senior from Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, scored the top world decathlon mark last weekend in Iowa, setting a new Drake Relays record of 8,265 points. Steinforth earned the 100m (10.65), long jump (7.90m, 25-11), shot put (15.28m, 50-1 ¾), 400m (47.96) and 100mH (14.09) event titles on his way to the decathlon win.

This marks Steinforth’s fourth career Big Ten weekly award, and as a team, the Huskers have won five awards this indoor and outdoor season combined.

The Husker men and women closed the indoor season inside the top 25, with the men finishing 12th and the women claiming 20th at the NCAA Championships. Out of 12 Husker entries, five earned First Team All-America honors by placing in the top eight.

The women saw three shot putters earn all-american status for the first time in school history and the women had six total all-americans, the most for the Huskers at the indoor championships since 2004. High Jumper Wilson became the first Husker indoor national champion since 2009, as he cleared an indoor PR and the third-highest mark in school history, 2.28m (7-5 ¾). With the win, Wilson grabbed his fourth first team all-america honor and wrapped up his senior indoor season with six event titles.&nbsp;

Axelina Johansson claimed her second shot put national championship and the first Husker indoor title since 2005, throwing 19.28m (63-3 ¼). The school-record holder earned her sixth all-america honor and finished the indoor season with five event titles. Henry Zimmerman finished eighth in the weight throw, Meyer placed eighth in the shot put and Micaylon Moore grabbed runner up in the triple jump to round out Nebraska’s First Team All-Americans.&nbsp;

At the Big Ten Championships, the Husker men finished fifth and the women placed sixth. West Lafayette, Ind. - The No. 19 Nebraska softball team posted its 23rd run-rule victory of the season with a 9-1 five-inning win over the Penn State Nittany Lions in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind., on Thursday. With the win, NU advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and will face the winner of UCLA/Indiana tomorrow.&nbsp;

For the second straight game, Ava Kuszak was the one to seal the victory for the Huskers, as she hit a walk-off single that sent Jordyn Bahl to the plate with the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth. Kuszak added three walks on the day. Ava Bredwell was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and Abbie Squier added a triple and two RBIs. Bella Bacon contributed a double.

Bahl (23-5) grabbed the win in the circle, as she tossed all 5.0 innings and allowed one run and two hits. She struck out nine batters in the process. Bahl retired the final 12 hitters of the game - eight via strikeout - as Penn State did not have a base runner after a leadoff walk to begin the second inning. Mady Volpe (10-16) took the loss for the Nittany Lions.

NU moved to 39-12 on the season, while PSU fell to 25-27.&nbsp;

Penn State got on the board in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single, taking advantage of a leadoff walk.

NU fought back with a five-run bottom of the first with all five runs scoring with two outs. Kuszak walked and went to third on a Nittany Lion error. Olivia DiNardo reached first on a fielder’s choice and went to second on a wild pitch that also scored Kuszak. Hannah Camenzind walked and advanced to second on another wild pitch. DiNardo went to third beforeSquier hit a triple to score both H. Camenzind and DiNardo. Bacon walked and stole second, and she and Squier crossed the plate on a Bredwell single. Husker Baseball preview vs Michigan

Nebraska&nbsp;men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced Thursday that Leo&nbsp;Curtis has signed with the Huskers for the 2025-26 season.

Curtis, a 7-foot-1, 220-pound forward from Reykjavik, Iceland, spent his senior season at Cambridge Arts, Technology and Science (CATS Academy) in Braintree, Mass., where he earned National Prep All-American Honorable-Mention honors after moving to the United States last fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;Playing for coach Cary Herer, Curtis averaged 12.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. His effort helped CATS Academy to a 28-7 record, a runner-up finish in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class AA tournament and a No. 5 national ranking. For his efforts, he was a first-team All-NEPSAC Class AA honoree.

At the National Prep Championships in March, Curtis averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game in games against Sunrise (Kan.) Christian and Vermont Academy to help CATS Academy to a quarterfinal appearance.

“Leo’s combination of size and skill set is an ideal fit for our system” Hoiberg said. “He is a natural stretch forward who can initiate offense and put pressure on the rim.&nbsp;&nbsp;At 7-foot-1, he can impact both ends of the floor. He played for one of the best prep teams in the country this past season, and that will help him in his adjustment to the college game. He is a natural athlete who played soccer before turning his attention to basketball. He is just scratching the surface of his potential, and I believe his best days are ahead of him.”

Curtis, who didn’t play basketball competitively until he was a teenager, is ranked No. 84 nationally in the class of 2025 by On3, which also has Curtis as the No. 11 center in the 2025 class. He was also ranked in the top 150 nationally by 247 Sports and a four-star prospect.

Curtis played for IR Reykjavik in the Iceland Subway League in 2023-24 and averaged 15.4 points per game on 58 percent shooting, including 42 percent from 3-point range, along with 8.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He totaled 10 double-doubles in 31 games in 2023-24, highlighted by a 35-point, 13-rebound effort. He was also a member of the Iceland National team pipeline, as he averaged 5.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game the 2024 U20 European Championships and averaged 8.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game at the 2023 U18 European Championships.

Garden County's Chad Dormann is the West team football head coach with Scot Anderson from Sidney, Ian Bish of Valentine and Trevor Ginkens from Hay Springs assisting. Dustin Kronhofman of Arapahoe is leading the East team with assistants coming from Cozad (Jayce Dueland), Brady (Andy Seaman) and Arapahoe (John Strand).

For the volleyball match, Natasha Haupt of Leyton leads the West squad with assistant help from Chase County's Kristi McNair.&nbsp; Rebecca Stearns of Brady is the East head coach and Maddy Krebs from North Platte St. Pat's will join her on the bench.

West Nebraska All-Star football, volleyball coaches revealed

CHADRON, Neb. – Travis Brewster has resigned his position as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Chadron State College, Athletic Director Mannie Reinsch announced Tuesday. 

Brewster, who had previous head coaching experience at the University of North Dakota (DI) and Saint Xavier University (NAIA), winning Coach of the Year awards at both stops, has guided the CSC's women's basketball program since the 2023-24 season. 

During his two seasons on the sidelines for the Eagles, his teams posted identical records of 6-20. This past season, Chadron State played the hardest non-conference schedule (by final opponent winning percentage) in Division II, then secured a 12th-place RMAC finish that was the program's highest place in the league standings since 2016-17. 

The 2024-25 Eagle women's basketball team also set the program record for highest team free-throw percentage in school history (77.7 percent) and made more three-pointers (165, 6.3 per game) than any Eagle team since 2010. 

Brewster's teams excelled academically, highlighted recently when eight CSC women's basketball players were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic Honor Roll. 

"I would like to thank Coach Brewster for his dedication and efforts to Chadron State. I wish Coach Brewster and his family the best moving forward," Reinsch said. 

Brewster was the 11th coach in women's basketball history at Chadron State College since the program began in 1973.

Outside hitter&nbsp;Ally Batenhorst&nbsp;delivered another standout performance off the bench, finishing with 15 kills on 27 swings with only two errors for a .481 hitting percentage. She also contributed seven digs and sealed the win with the match-ending block.&nbsp;Brooke Nuneviller&nbsp;added 13 kills and seven digs, while&nbsp;Reagan Cooper&nbsp;posted seven kills on a franchise-record .700 clip (7-0-10).
