NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Organizers of the Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run are hoping to see participation from every Nebraska county and all 50 states as the annual event returns later this month to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention.
The Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial 2 Mile and 5 Mile Road Run will take place May 30 at Cody Park in North Platte, while virtual participants can complete their run or walk anytime between May 22 and May 31.
The event was created in 2020 by the Vanderheiden family after the loss of their son, Tyler, to suicide. Since then, the memorial run has grown into a nationwide effort promoting mental and emotional wellness through walking and running.
According to organizers, participants from all 50 states, 93 Nebraska counties and two countries have taken part in previous years. This year, organizers are encouraging more people to sign up in hopes of “turning the map green,” representing participation from every county in Nebraska.
As of this week, organizers said participants were still needed from 42 Nebraska counties and eight states.
The event is organized by the Platte River Fitness Series with support from the West Central District Health Department and Nebraska Game and Parks.
Proceeds from the race help fund the creation, maintenance and improvement of trails in Nebraska’s state park system. This year’s fundraising efforts will support trails at Smith Falls State Park.
Organizers say the race serves as both a memorial and a reminder that physical activity can play an important role in mental health and suicide prevention.
The in-person race begins at 8:30 a.m. May 30 at Cody Park in North Platte. Registration and packet pickup will run from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.
Those unable to attend in person can still participate virtually from anywhere during the designated race window.
More information and registration details are available through the Platte River Fitness Series and Nebraska Game and Parks.
