KEARNEY – More than 240 UNK employees, students, and community members signed a petition requesting that the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska reconsider the budget reductions they are requiring of UNK given the substantial damage that such budgetary cuts will cause the campus—especially in UNK’s Humanities. The petition language is included below, and a list of signers is attached. This petition asks that the Appropriations Committee of Nebraska’s State Legislature reconsider its appropriated budget for the University of Nebraska given the costs that current and future students of UNK will have to bear to meet our campus’ budgetary shortfall.

Throughout this semester representatives of UNK employees (staff and faculty) have reviewed UNK’s budgetary needs relative to the demands of NU’s Board of Regents and have concluded that the cuts UNK’s administration announced on November 20th threaten the experience UNK can provide to its students, surrounding communities, and other stakeholders in Nebraska and beyond.

The petition calls for the Board of Regents to reconsider the size of the budgetary cuts it is demanding of UNK to ensure that UNK remain true to its mission and purpose.  It also asks, given the great harm that these budget cuts will have on our current and future students, the Unicameral’s Appropriations Committee increase the level of state support for the NU system to ensure that UNK remains a viable and comprehensive institution of higher learning for central Nebraska.
