Going on today at the fairgrounds is the 4-H Livestock Sale with the buyer's lunch beginning at 11:30pm and the sale begins at 1:00pm. The sale will be a premium only.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Omaha, Neb. - Union Pacific Railroad has appointed Josh Perkes to senior vice president and chief human resources officer, reporting directly to CEO Jim Vena effective Aug. 1. Perkes will be responsible for all human resources and labor relations functions and become a member of the company’s senior leadership team.

“Josh embodies the strength of talent and depth of experience within Union Pacific,” Vena said. “His 22 years of leadership across Marketing and Sales, Operating and Human Resources roles on the railroad make him the ideal leader to focus on the heartbeat of our company – developing and advancing our people.”

Perkes most recently served as vice president-Loup Logistics, a wholly owned Union Pacific subsidiary providing innovative transportation and logistics solutions. He’s held leadership positions on Marketing and Sales’ Premium, Industrial, Bulk and Operations teams, as well as across Workforce Resources functions such as talent management, talent acquisition, employee engagement, training, compensation and benefits. He also spent time in field sales, logistics and Operating as part of a cross-functional leadership training program. Perkes has a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

President Beth Whited will serve as a chief advisor to Perkes in his new role, in addition to her responsibilities for Law, Strategy, External Relations, Public Affairs and Corporate Communications.

North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp;The National Junior College Athletic Association recognized 12,245 student-athletes from across the country for their dedication in the classroom last week.

The Knights volleyball and women's basketball teams combined to land ten student-athletes on the 2023-24 NJCAA All-Academic Team lists. Those who achieved a GPA of 3.6 or higher are:

NJCAA All-Academic Second Team: 3.80-3.99 GPA

NJCAA All-Academic Third Team: 3.6-3.79 GPA

Additionally, the Knights volleyball team posted a 3.59 cumulative GPA to earn NJCAA Academic Team of the Year status.

NPCC lands ten student-athletes on NJCAA All-Academic Teams

North Platte, Neb. - Twelve contestants from around the area made their way to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds Thursday afternoon to compete in the "You Can Be A Star" singing competition and Eben Rosentrater took home first place.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rosentrater is 21 years old and is a native of Paxton. He is a student at Chadron State College majoring in communications with a focus in media production. He performed Tennessee Whiskey on his guitar done in the style of Chris Stapleton.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rosentrater has been playing guitar for around two years, but music has always been in his life in some capacity. "I have been singing my entire life.... and I have played saxophone for 10 (years)" said Rosentrater.&nbsp;

Earning second place in this year's competition was Nichole Schmidt who performed Misery by PINK and Steven Tyler and third place was Braydyn Hickman who performed Jayton and Jill by Zane Williams. Hickman performed the song on his guitar.&nbsp;

The contestants had the option of singing to a soundtrack or playing an instrument. During the competition, eight contestants sang to a soundtrack and four played an instrument. Two contestants performed their own original song.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rosentrater will advance to the Galaxy of Stars Talent Search Finals later in 2024 where the Overall Vocalist will win a $4500.00 Nashville Recording Session!&nbsp;

The Galaxy of Stars Talent Search provides an opportunity for talent of all ages to perform and engage with an audience. Since its beginning in Nebraska in 1993, the program's vision is to encourage, inspire and be a platform for talented individuals to grow in ability and skill in a friendly and caring atmosphere.  </figure>North Platte PostNorth Platte, Neb. - Twelve contestants from around the area made their way to the Lincoln County Fairgrounds Thursday afternoon to compete in the "You Can Be A Star" singing competition and Eben Rosentrater took home first place.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rosentrater is 21 years old and is a native of Paxton. He is a student at Chadron State College majoring in communications with a focus in media production. He performed Tennessee Whiskey on his guitar done in the style of Chris Stapleton.&nbsp;&nbsp;Rosentrater has been playing guitar for around two years, but music has always been in his life in some capacity. "I have been singing my entire life.... and I have played saxophone for 10 (years)" said Rosentrater.&nbsp;Earning second place in this year's competition was Nichole Schmidt who performed Misery by PINK and Steven Tyler and third place was Braydyn Hickman who performed Jayton and Jill by Zane Williams. Hickman performed the song on his guitar.&nbsp;<figure>

Paxton native wins the 2024 "You Can Be A Star" singing competition

Ogallala, Neb. - Fire crews responded to two separate fire calls on Thursday with one fire call taking place in Ogallala city limits while the other fire was outside city limits.&nbsp;

According to the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department (OVFD), around 6:00am (MT) crews were dispatched to a garage fire. When the crew arrived, they observed the fire self-vented through an exterior wall and roof. Firefighters extinguished the main fire in the garage.&nbsp;

OVFD states the cause of the fire was accidental, but the accident is still under investigation. There were no injuries reported.&nbsp;

Paxton FD - Command with extra personnel 

Just around 2:40pm (MT), crews were dispatched to a grass fire outside of the city limits. The OVFD says a grass fire was moving towards the river bottom. Crews successfully stopped forward movement of the fire. Crews would work on small acres as mop up was extremely complex with multiple hazards such as trees, difficult access, weather and carrying fuel types.&nbsp;

The fire department said in a press release roads were able to cut lines around the area as well as creativity mitigate a tremendously problematic area on the south side of the incident. Crews spent around 6 hours from time of page to apparatus back in service. No injuries were reported from the grass fire deemed accidental in nature from agriculture process.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - After months of anticipation, the Paws on the Platte community dog art auction is here!&nbsp;Twenty-six life-size dog statues will be bid on and sold Friday evening, July 26, at Pals Brewing Company. Proceeds from the auction go to support Paws-itive Partners Humane Society in North Platte. 

Paws-itive Partners provides financial help to lower income pet owners to spay/neuter, aid in rehoming displaced pets and help with emergency veterinary care. The organization assists approximately 500 pets annually.&nbsp;The large fiberglass dog statues were painted by area artists and each is unique and one-of-a-kind. 

Artists incorporated cigar bands, feathered wings, butterflies, flowers, robotic parts, and more, to carry out the theme of their dog. The styles vary from realistic to contemporary and from playful to serious.&nbsp;The public is invited to the auction. Even those not planning to purchase a dog statue will enjoy the evening. 

Music is provided by Songscapesdj, Cartwright’s BBQ truck and Pals is available for dinner and beverages. Jeff White Auction Service will entertain the bidding audience.&nbsp;Paws on the Platte opens at Pals Friday at 5:00 pm and the auction begins at 6:30 pm.&nbsp; &nbsp;

4-H is America's largest youth development program across the United States that helps learn skills that will last a lifetime. The age requirement for 4-H is the ages of 8-18. Makynzi Smith and younger brother Dracen Smith are preparing to show calves at this year's fair. The pair began preparing for the fair last fall.&nbsp;

In 2023, WCDHD achieved a significant milestone by issuing over 200 certifications in lifesaving training, including Community CPR/AED, First Aid, and First Aid for Severe Trauma. North Platte, Neb. - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) announced on Monday a new staff member has joined the team. Joining the team is Jax, who is the Lincoln County Sheriff's Crisis Canine in training.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The LCSO says Jax, and his handler&nbsp;Corporal Season Trevino have partnered with Crisis Canines of the Midlands, a non-profit group from Colfax, Iowa. The Crisis Canines of the Midlands trains dogs and handlers on how to provide support after a crisis or natural disaster.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Over the next year, Corporal Trevino and Jax will take part in training in areas such as&nbsp;peer support, critical incident stress management, and trauma response on multiple levels.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LCSO states that while the pair is not in training, the K9 Team will be providing victim support, assisting with criminal investigation interviews, and working with community outreach programs within Lincoln County.&nbsp;

Lincoln County Sheriff's Office welcomes newest staff member

LINCOLN —&nbsp;The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has unanimously approved transferring a racing license from a racetrack in Hastings to a new facility in Ogallala.

Commissioners voted 7-0 Friday to allow the license transfer for Hastings Exposition and Racing Inc. The company plans to partner with Elite Casino Resorts, which owns the resort in Grand Island, and plans to establish a multi-track quarter horse racing circuit in western Nebraska.&nbsp;

The Hastings company had tried for multiple years to set up a “racino” and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for a location that would have been about 17 to 20 miles from Grand Island’s Fonner Park. It announced&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/western-nebraska-casino-possible-as-plans-announced-for-a-racing-license-in-ogallala/">plans last summer</a>&nbsp;for the license transfer.

State law allows a one-time license move because Hastings was one of the state’s “original” racetrack locations. The&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/nebraska-commission-advances-first-step-for-ogallala-racetrack-approves-first-ever-table-games/">move</a>&nbsp;must be to a Nebraska county where there isn’t already a racetrack; in this case, the license is moving from Adams County to Keith County.

A June market study determined the move would be positive.

Commissioner Shane Greckel said commissioners cleared up final questions during Friday’s meeting, so he was “very happy to move forward on it.”

“I was happy to see that industry grow because quarter horses haven’t seen that yet,” Greckel said Friday evening. “It’s nice to see it.”

Greckel said some of his questions were about process. He wanted to ensure uniformity with other venues in Lincoln, Columbus and Ogallala, saying consistency is the basis of good governance.

He further explained that the planned Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack, which would be on the southwest corner of Interstate 80 and Highway 26, would be a “great opportunity.”

Lake McConaughy is already a “destination event,” for example, with the resort providing year-round entertainment and a new venue for quarter horse racing. Nebraska has more quarter horses than Thoroughbreds, he said.&nbsp;

The transfer would also build on an agricultural need and demand in western Nebraska.

“Let’s face it, Omaha and Lincoln, eastern Nebraska, is very developed,” Greckel said. “We need to work on our neighbors out there to the west and help them out to make sure they have the same types of entertainment and investments as the eastern part does. This is just that next step.”

Commissioners on Friday also unanimously decided WarHorse Casino could open its doors in Omaha beginning Aug. 6.

In other news, four finalists were previously selected for the gaming commission’s next executive director.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A new state law,&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=54893" target="_blank">Legislative Bill 839</a>, that took effect April 3 gives Gov. Jim Pillen the authority to approve the commission’s pick.

The commission will forward a name to Pillen following its August meeting. The finalists:
