LINCOLN —&nbsp;The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has unanimously approved transferring a racing license from a racetrack in Hastings to a new facility in Ogallala.

Commissioners voted 7-0 Friday to allow the license transfer for Hastings Exposition and Racing Inc. The company plans to partner with Elite Casino Resorts, which owns the resort in Grand Island, and plans to establish a multi-track quarter horse racing circuit in western Nebraska.&nbsp;

The Hastings company had tried for multiple years to set up a “racino” and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for a location that would have been about 17 to 20 miles from Grand Island’s Fonner Park. It announced&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/western-nebraska-casino-possible-as-plans-announced-for-a-racing-license-in-ogallala/">plans last summer</a>&nbsp;for the license transfer.

State law allows a one-time license move because Hastings was one of the state’s “original” racetrack locations. The&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/nebraska-commission-advances-first-step-for-ogallala-racetrack-approves-first-ever-table-games/">move</a>&nbsp;must be to a Nebraska county where there isn’t already a racetrack; in this case, the license is moving from Adams County to Keith County.

A June market study determined the move would be positive.

Commissioner Shane Greckel said commissioners cleared up final questions during Friday’s meeting, so he was “very happy to move forward on it.”

“I was happy to see that industry grow because quarter horses haven’t seen that yet,” Greckel said Friday evening. “It’s nice to see it.”

Greckel said some of his questions were about process. He wanted to ensure uniformity with other venues in Lincoln, Columbus and Ogallala, saying consistency is the basis of good governance.

He further explained that the planned Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack, which would be on the southwest corner of Interstate 80 and Highway 26, would be a “great opportunity.”

Lake McConaughy is already a “destination event,” for example, with the resort providing year-round entertainment and a new venue for quarter horse racing. Nebraska has more quarter horses than Thoroughbreds, he said.&nbsp;

The transfer would also build on an agricultural need and demand in western Nebraska.

“Let’s face it, Omaha and Lincoln, eastern Nebraska, is very developed,” Greckel said. “We need to work on our neighbors out there to the west and help them out to make sure they have the same types of entertainment and investments as the eastern part does. This is just that next step.”

Commissioners on Friday also unanimously decided WarHorse Casino could open its doors in Omaha beginning Aug. 6.

In other news, four finalists were previously selected for the gaming commission’s next executive director.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A new state law,&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=54893" target="_blank">Legislative Bill 839</a>, that took effect April 3 gives Gov. Jim Pillen the authority to approve the commission’s pick.

The commission will forward a name to Pillen following its August meeting. The finalists:

North Platte Trails Networks Hosts Whitakers Way 5k & 10k

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Public Schools Foundation is getting to host a few events July 26th and July 27th. On July 26th, its the Excellence of Evening and on the 27th, it's the Bulldog Classic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Evening of Excellence is set for July 26th at Venue 304 in North Platte. The event will feature NPHS Distinguished Alumni. The night will feature a cocktail hour, auction, recognition and more. This years theme is Speakeasy, Dirty 30's Celebrating 30 years. Cocktail hour begins at 6:28pm and the event begins at 7:28pm. Tickets are $60 individual or $500 for a table or a new option to reserve a table for $650 with wine or charcutier board. The following day is the 4th Annual Bulldog Golf Classic taking place at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte. Proceeds will help go towards supporting the NPPSF Dual Credit Scholarship Program and the NPHS Booster Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hot Sheets: July 20th, 2024

<a>JULY 19, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>—&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have arrested a man following a pursuit in Lincoln County.

Thursday evening at approximately 6:00 p.m., a trooper patrolling on Highway 83 near mile marker 104 attempted a traffic stop on a motorcycle traveling at 122 miles per hour. The driver accelerated and the trooper initiated a pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle reached speeds above 140 miles per hour and fled through a no passing zone. Lincoln County deputies joined the pursuit, but visual was lost after the suspect vehicle turned north onto Highway 97. The trooper terminated the pursuit.

A short time later, another trooper saw a motorcycle matching the suspect’s description on Highway 92, west of Stapleton. The trooper initiated a traffic stop and confirmed it was the same rider who had fled the initial pursuit.

The driver was identified as Noah Fullerton, 21, and was arrested for operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, no motorcycle license, willful reckless driving, and traffic violations.

Wichita War Dancer to perform this afternoon at the Buffalo Bill Ranch in North Platte

Stapleton, Neb. - The community of Stapleton is the site for Matthew Powell and Out of Grain Woodworking Spaghetti Feed, Bake Sale and Silent Auction taking place Saturday, July 20th at 5:00pm. 

The Spaghetti Feed takes place at the Vets Club which is located at 249 Main Street and the auction and bake sale will be taking place at the Logan County 4H Fairground Building.

Powell lost his home, business and vehicle to a fire on June 27th. According to a Facebook post back on June 28th from Stapleton Fire Chief Franklin Kramer, first responders were dispatched to the scene at 6:01 pm and returned to the station at 1:10am. Numerous first responder agencies responded to the fire call to battle the fire or divert traffic while crews worked.&nbsp;

Powell was treated for burns and smoke inhalation.&nbsp;100% of all proceeds will be going straight to Matthew. Spaghetti Dinner will be a free will donation.&nbsp;

Matthew Powell Spaghetti Feed, Bake Sale and Silent Auction taking place in Stapleton on Saturday

North Platte, Neb. - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and first responders responded to a one-vehicle, fatal accident Thursday morning outside of North Platte.&nbsp;

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), shortly before 10:00 am Thursday, deputies and first responders were dispatched to an accident on West A Street, several miles west of North Platte.&nbsp;

The LCSO states as deputies arrived on the scene, they found a 2000 Monte Carlo that had heavy frontend damage from hitting a tree and two occupants inside the vehicle. The female driver was seriously injured, and the male passenger was deceased. Evidence indicates the accident happened hours earlier.&nbsp;

The vehicle's driver was identified as Addison Malone, 18, from Ogallala. Officials say that Malone may have been confused about what road she was driving on and did not realize that she was on A Street, which is a dead-end street. The driver failed to see the warning signs and hit a large tree, head-on, at a high rate of speed. Malone suffers from serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The deceased passenger was identified as Nathaniel Sandavol, 18 of Ogallala.&nbsp;

The North Platte Rescue had to use extraction equipment to open the vehicle to remove the occupants. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.&nbsp;LCSO says alcohol was a factor in the accident and criminal charges are pending for Malone. The investigation remains ongoing.

One teen deceased, one teen seriously injured in fatal crash outside of North Platte

JULY 19, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Texas man following a fatal crash in southwest Nebraska.

Thursday, at approximately 6:55 a.m. CT, the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Department requested Troopers to assist in responding to a fatal crash that involved two semi-trucks and trailers. The crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 6 and Highway 25.

Preliminary investigation shows that a semi-truck and trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 25, north of Trenton. The semi then failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Highway 6. The semi collided with another semi-truck and trailer that was traveling westbound on Highway 6.

The driver of the westbound semi, identified as Wayne Cook, 42, of McCook, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the northbound semi, Keith Gesegnet, 50, of Stephenville, Texas, has been lodged in Hitchcock County Jail for motor vehicle homicide, tampering with physical evidence, possession of alcohol in a commercial motor vehicle, open alcohol container, and numerous commercial vehicle violations.

The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting a full crash reconstruction as well as a Carrier Enforcement post-crash inspection. The investigation remains ongoing.

Numerous agencies assisted on scene, including the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Department, McCook Police Department, Palisade and Trenton Fire Departments, and others.

North Platte Police Department seeking public help identifying a subject

Hitchcock County - A City of McCook trash truck was involved in an accident Thursday morning in Hitchcock County which resulted in the death of the driver according to officials.&nbsp;

According to the City of McCook, the driver of the truck was identified as&nbsp;Wayne A. Cook, an employee of the City of McCook at its solid waste transfer station. Cook was driving the trash truck from McCook to the J Bar J landfill south of Ogallala.&nbsp;

The city says it's preparing to recover the semi and to implement clean up procedures. The Nebraska State Patrol, assisted by the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s Office, leads the investigation.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Pow Wow is getting ready to kick off their fifth year beginning with an event at Pal's Brewing on Thursday with the official ceremony scheduled for Friday and lasting until Sunday. The event brings folks from all over the U.S. to learn Native American culture. This year's Pow Wow is honoring veterans.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The North Platte Pow Wow is July 19th-July 21st at the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park Museum. Admission is $7 a day or weekend pass is $15. It is advised to bring your own lawn chair to the event and to camp on-site, a NE Game and Parks Permit is required.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; North Platte, Neb. - The North Platte Police Department participated in a Speed Enforcement Campaign funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), Highway Safety Office from July 5th through July 13th.  A total of 162 traffic contacts were made department wide. 

 Fifty-three citations were issued.  Fourteen citations were issued for speeding.  Two DUI arrests were made.  One Juvenile was cited for MIP.  Five people were arrested/cited for Driving Under Suspension.  Seven citations were issued for violation of traffic control devices. Two citations were issued for careless driving.  One citation was issued for exhibition of speed.  Six people were jailed on arrest warrants.  One person wanted in Iowa fled in his vehicle leading to weapons charges, assault on an officer, flight to avoid arrest &amp; criminal impersonation. 

A subject facing theft charges in California was stopped in a semi-truck, which lead to his arrest for 8 counts of felony forgery.  Two people were cited for possession of marijuana.  One person was jailed for possession of a controlled substance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte Police issued fifty-three citations following a Speed Enforcement Campaign

North Platte, Neb., July 18, 2024 – Great Plains Health has received the American Heart&nbsp; Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold&nbsp; recognition for its commitment to providing rapid, research-based care to patients&nbsp; experiencing a type of heart attack known as non-ST elevation myocardial infarction&nbsp; (NSTEMI). Broken Bow, Neb. - The National Weather Service (NWS) have completed their damage survey for Custer County after a strong storm that produced an EF-1 tornado that briefly hit the area on Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to the NWS, an isolated thunderstorm hit north central Nebraska in the late afternoon and swept across the region. Broken Bow was hit with a downburst that impacted a commercial building, where the roof was torn off and thrown to the south impacting power lines and neighboring buildings. Many trees were damaged in the community. Wind speeds reached anywhere from 65 mph to 95 mph. Hail damage occurred and was noted in the report.&nbsp;

An EF-1 Tornado was briefly seen on the far western side of Broken Bow but only contacted land for about two seconds, according to the NWS survey. During the brief time, an 800-pound trailer was thrown in an adjacent vehicle. The tornado was witnessed by a storm spotter and caught on surveillance camera.&nbsp;

NWS reports there were no injuries or fatalities from this storm. Wind speeds reached anywhere from 86mph to 110 mph.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.–– The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory (GSL) Open House will celebrate its 25th anniversary on August 21 in the heart of the Sandhills near Whitman, Nebraska. 

The open house encourages all to attend at no cost for the latest updates in the beef industry and current research. 

The open house will begin at 8 a.m. MDT and offer some hybrid sessions throughout the day for those unable to attend in person. A complimentary lunch will be provided to those in attendance. 

The event will give ranchers the latest cattle market updates, interactive sessions, panel discussions, research updates, and more. Researchers and experts will cover various points including range management, heat stress, fly control, and yearling systems among other topics.

The 25th anniversary of the GSL Open House celebrates many years of dedicated research at the ranch that has strengthened and innovated the practices used by ranchers today. To recognize this anniversary, a panel will reflect on how GSL got to where it is today and honor alumni of the ranch.

The Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory is in the Nebraska Sandhills and lies in Grant, Hooker, and Cherry counties. The former Rafter C Ranch was leased by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from the University of Nebraska Foundation in 1981 to serve as a hub for research in the Sandhills. 

With the use of ranch economics in different areas of research, GSL plays a key role in developing plant and animal production systems for the Sandhills of Nebraska that are environmentally and economically sustainable. The open house allows GSL to share this research with locals in the area and across the state.
