Portions of Red Willow State Recreation Area in Red Willow County are temporarily closed after a fire burned approximately 85 acres in the park.

The fire, which was reported about 12:40 p.m. March 22, was contained to the southwest side of the dam and no structures were affected. However, this area of the park — which includes South Lookout and Red Willow campgrounds — will remain closed to camping and hiking until further notice.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is suspected to have originated from an unattended campfire at a campsite.

Eight area fire departments and several neighboring landowners with tractors joined Nebraska Game and Parks wildlife and parks staff to contain the Saturday fire. The fire departments included Red Willow Western Rural Fire Department, McCook Fire Department, Culbertson Rural Fire Department, Beaver City Volunteer Fire Department, Maywood Volunteer Fire Department, Curtis Volunteer Fire Department, Hayes Center Rural Fire Department, and Indianola Fire and Rescue.

North Platte Community College will host a blood drive April 9. The event is open to the public.

The American Red Cross will be set up from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the concession area of the McDonald-Belton Building on the NPCC South Campus, 601 W. State Farm Rd.

Donors of all blood types are encouraged to participate and earn a $15 Amazon.com gift card by email.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is partnering with Tobacco-Free Nebraska to promote the Take Down Tobacco Initiative on April 1, 2025. Sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, this event empowers individuals to take a stand against the tobacco industry. On this day, young advocates and their communities will unite to confront Big Tobacco, unveil the tactics used to entice youth into addiction, and advocate for meaningful change.

Tobacco products like flavored vapes have contributed to the youth e-cigarette epidemic, undermining years of progress made in reducing tobacco use in the U.S. The tobacco industry has a longstanding pattern of targeting young people with flavored products, including e-cigarettes and menthol tobacco.

“We are witnessing a rise in smoking rates among our youth, and it’s becoming increasingly alarming,” says Hunter York, Senior Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Raising awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use is crucial in safeguarding our young people from its dangers.”

On April 1, 2025, during the Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action, SWNPHD invites youth activists, educators, parents, health advocates and concerned citizens to unite in their commitment to:

The SWNPHD and Tobacco Free Nebraska are working to help people quit tobacco, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, and protect youth by keeping them from using tobacco. Spring is in the air and animals are out and about. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) reminds everyone to use caution around wild animals or animals you do not know. Animals can carry several diseases that are infectious to people, and sick animals or mothers protecting babies may be more likely to bite or cause injuries.

“Even animals that may look friendly should be treated with caution if you are unfamiliar with them,” explains Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager with SWNPHD. “Teaching your children about animal safety is extremely important to help prevent bites.”

Wild animals have the potential to carry rabies which can be passed on to humans by the bite or saliva of an infected animal. Rabies is a deadly viral infection that affects the nervous system of humans if not treated quickly after exposure. Rabies should be suspected in all animals that show a sudden change in behavior that is different from normal, such as animals normally active at night being seen during the day.

Be alert when around wild animals and do not approach them. Baby animals such as raccoons or opossums may be cute but should never be touched or handled. Bats are important bug eaters in Nebraska but are also a common carrier of rabies. Bats should always be treated with caution, especially if they need to be removed from human spaces. Trap and remove bats using containers and thick gloves to make sure there is no direct contact or contact a professional to remove them.

Ogallala, Ne - There will be new leadership in the Ogallala Public Schools boys basketball program in 2025. Andy Gillen steps down after seven remarkable years, handing the reins to Ogallala graduate and former player Carter Brown—his oldest son.

Coach Andy Gillen has been the architect of an extraordinary era for Ogallala boys basketball since taking over seven years ago. Under his leadership, the team compiled an impressive 116-24 record, cementing its status as a juggernaut in Nebraska high school sports. Gillen’s tenure included six Southwest Conference (SWC) Coach of the Year awards, six state tournament qualifications, seven regular-season SWC championships, and six SWC tournament titles. His teams also achieved notable postseason success, securing third place in Class C1 in 2019 and 2023, and finishing as state runner-up in 2020. Gillen’s strategic brilliance and relentless drive turned Ogallala into a perennial contender, leaving a legacy of excellence.

Reflecting on his time as coach, Gillen shared a heartfelt message:

"Basketball has always been more than just a game to me. It’s been a passion—one that I’ve loved teaching, watching, and playing. But beyond the X’s and O’s, it’s the relationships, the camaraderie, and the moments with the guys that I will miss the most. Together, we built something special. The 'Truth' brand has become synonymous with winning the right way—playing hard, playing together, and embracing the mindset that 'stats are for losers; the final score is for winners.' That identity will always be a source of pride for me. As I step away, I do so with immense pride, knowing that I am passing the torch to my oldest son, Carter. Watching him continue the legacy we’ve built fills me with excitement and gratitude. No matter where the journey takes me, I will always be a part of the 'Truth' family."

Gillen’s decision to step down stems not from exhaustion, but from a desire to offer someone else the same opportunity he received—a chance to lead a thriving program poised for continued success. That someone is Carter Brown, an Ogallala High School alumnus who played under Gillen and now returns to his roots. A recent graduate of Graceland University, Brown started for the Graceland men’s basketball team over the past two seasons, helping lead the squad to the NAIA national tournament—an achievement that marked only the second such appearance in the school’s history. His deep connection to Ogallala’s winning culture and his proven leadership make him a natural fit to carry forward the “Truth” legacy.

The Ogallala Public Schools community extends its deepest gratitude to Coach Andy Gillen for his unparalleled success, dedication, and the indelible mark he’s left on the program. Gillen steps down as Ogallala Boys Basketball Coach; makes way for son to continue Indians' success

Omaha, Neb. - Union Pacific Railroad has announced the appointment of Christina Conlin as senior vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary succeeding Craig Richardson, who is set to retire at the end of March.

Conlin will oversee all aspects of the company's legal affairs, including commercial transactions and litigation, labor and employment and regulatory matters. She will also lead the company's claims management team.

Before joining Union Pacific, she led Goodyear's Legal Enterprise Risk group, which included legal oversight for labor and employment; regulatory affairs; environmental, health and safety; compliance and ethics; and sustainability reporting. Union Pacific Announces Appointment of Christina Conlin to Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary

Ogallala, Neb. - Governor Jim Pillen will make a stop in Ogallala on Monday, March 24 for a town hall meeting. The meeting will take place at the Petrified Wood Gallery. The meeting is set to begin at 11:00am (MT) and will last until 12:00pm (MT).&nbsp;

Governor Pillen will talk about property taxes, the state budget and his main priorities as Governor of Nebraska. Since taking office, Governor Pillen has made trips around Nebraska to host town hall meetings. Governor Pillen made an appearance in Ogallala for a town hall meeting back in March of 2024.&nbsp;

Following the town hall meeting, Governor Pillen will be in North Platte with local, state and federal leaders of Nebraska for the ribbon cutting of North Platte's new beef plant, Sustainable Beef.&nbsp;

Crazy week of weather has hit the state of Nebraska with high temperatures earlier in the week, than a winter storm and now heading back to spring temperatures. While temperatures may be on the rise again, the National Weather Service, North Platte Office (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning will be in effect today from 12:00pm (MT)/1:00pm (CT) and will end at 7:00pm (MT)/8:00pm (CT).&nbsp;

The NWS states the areas in the effect is across Western Nebraska and Central Sandhills into Southwest Nebraska. North Platte, Curtis, Brady, Maxwell, Hershey, Sutherland, Paxton, Ogallala, Imperial and Oshkosh are just a few of the many towns in our listening area that will be under this warning.&nbsp;

Critical fire conditions with rising temperatures and northwest winds of 20 - 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. If any fire develops, it may spread quickly due to the fast wind speeds. Fires have hit across Nebraska over the past few weeks and many local fire departments have issued fire bans during this time. Around this time last year, two major fires occurred outside of North Platte. &nbsp;

The NWS says that critical fire conditions may be possible for Saturday during the afternoon hours and also Sunday.&nbsp;

North Platte Community College hosted 295 students from 12 area middle schools Thursday as part of the Expanding Your Horizons Conference.

The students spent the day listening to speakers and participating in hands-on-activities designed to generate interest in a variety of fields, including microbiology, computer coding, physical therapy, outdoor education, law enforcement and radiology among others. Sessions were led by volunteers from 20 businesses.

The following schools were represented: Adams, Callaway, Eustis-Farnam, Gothenburg, McCook, Mullen, Ogallala, Paxton, St. Pat’s, Sutherland, Wallace and Wauneta-Palisade.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) Grassroots Champion Award was created to recognize hospital leaders who most effectively educate elected officials on both the national and state level on how major issues affect hospitals’ vital role in the community, who have done an exemplary job in broadening the base of community support for the hospital, and who are tireless advocates for hospitals and their patients. Annually, one individual from each state is recognized as a “Grassroots Champion” by the AHA in consultation with state hospital associations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to David Slattery, the NHA Senior Director of State &amp; Rural Advocacy, “This award goes to an individual who has a strong track record in grassroots advocacy for their hospital and community. The NHA appreciates Jason’s work and involvement with the provider assessment and EMS guidance in the legislature over the past year.”&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - People's Health in North Platte is back again to education young adults with their focus this time around on high school students with the annual Wild Night. This event is taking place Friday at Wild Bills from 4:00pm - 6:00pm.

Students have the opportunity to attend the event and earn a passport card and attend all the different agencies to learn. The event is geared around health. After students complete their passport, they will get a card and that card can get them free laser tag, bowling and pizza. Their will be raffles and giveaways. Students are asked to bring their HS ID with them

The Wildwoods have become a force in the folk scene, boasting accolades like being finalists at the FreshGrass Music Festival Band competition and Gems on VHS "Gems in the Rough" competition in 2023. Their songwriting prowess is underscored by semi-final placements in the International Songwriting competition, with tracks like "Untitled" and "Way of Train." Recognized consistently at the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards, they were crowned "Best Band" by the Lincoln Journal Star’s Lincoln Choice Awards in 2022.

The doors will open for the concert at 3:00pm Mountain time, at Willow and Oak. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.The Ogallala Regional Arts Council is able to bring entertainment to the area with the support of the Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and through the sale of tickets and&nbsp;memberships. Paulsen, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Work includes concrete pavement repair, storm sewer, lighting, concrete paving, milling, and asphalt overlay. Traffic will be maintained with traffic shifts, temporary traffic signals, and a pilot car and flaggers. On-street parking will be affected during construction and a 10-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Sept. 2025. 

The purpose of these projects is to preserve the transportation asset, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public. 

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and to put phones down.

Work will begin on N-2, N-21, and N-70 in Broken Bow

March 20, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume March 25 on Jeffers Street in North Platte, near the Francis Street, and B Street intersections, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. 

Paulsen, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Finish work to complete the project includes concrete pavement, sidewalk and ADA ramps, seeding, and sodding. Traffic will be maintained with single lane closures. Anticipated completion is May 2025.

Nebraska Department of TransportationMarch 20, 2025 (North Platte, Neb.) — Weather permitting, work will resume March 25 on Jeffers Street in North Platte, near the Francis Street, and B Street intersections, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Paulsen, Inc., of Cozad, is the contractor for this project. Finish work to complete the project includes concrete pavement, sidewalk and ADA ramps, seeding, and sodding. Traffic will be maintained with single lane closures. Anticipated completion is May 2025. The Mid-Plains Community College Board of Governors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, March 19, 2025, in Room 200 of the W.W. Wood Building on the North Platte Community College North Campus, 1101 Halligan Drive, North Platte, Neb.

Board Chair Cynthia Duncan started the meeting with a roll call. In addition to Duncan, those present were MPCC President Ryan Purdy and Board members: Matthew Broz, Kirk Crawley, Molly Jeffres, Ted Klug Jr., Dr. Ben Lashley, Megan McGown, Kent Miller, Tyler Pribbeno and&nbsp;Tricia Schaffer. Board member Kim Korgan was absent and excused.

a. MPCC Motor School Program Coordinator Joshua Young gave an overview of the program to the board.

b. Eric Gonzalez was introduced to the board as the new director of accounting.

e. Nursing Faculty Retirement, Marina Jones, effective Feb. 20, 2025

a. The Board approved the Dental Assisting Program Review as presented to be forwarded to the Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education.

b. The Board approved the HVAC Program Review as presented to be forwarded to the Coordinating Commission for Post-Secondary Education.

c. The Board approved the bid from JEO Consulting Group Inc. of Omaha to develop a comprehensive regional workforce housing revitalization plan, create a skilled trades workforce inventory and gather data to incentivize developers, inform leaders and assist communities.

d. The Board approved the low bid from Riverside Technologies for the Virtual Desktop Server Upgrade (VDI) in the amount of $137,049.30. 

e. The Board approved the purchase of two one-ton dual rear-wheel pickups from Wagner Chevrolet in the amount of $84,941. &nbsp;

f. The Board approved the bills for January in the amount of $2,075,126.87.

g. The Board approved the February disbursements in the amount of $2,338,297.61.

Cabinet Reports: The Board heard reports from MPCC President Ryan Purdy, Vice President of Academic Affairs and NPCC Dr. Jody Tomanek, Vice President of Student Affairs and MCC Kelly Rippen, Vice President of Administrative Services Mike Steele, Director of Institutional Effectiveness Tad Pfeifer, Director of Institutional Advancement Haven Smith and Director of Marketing &amp; Public Information Daniel Stinman.

a. The Board went into closed session at 8:02 p.m. to discuss negotiations and real estate. The Board reconvened in open session at 8:38 p.m.

a. The Board approved the negotiated agreement with the Mid-Plains Faculty Association (MPFA) as presented, which includes a 5% total compensation increase for 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation announced around 2:30am this morning that I-80 is open in both directions. I-80 closure began yesterday morning from Lexington to Lincoln and as the day went on closures of I-80 went from North Platte to Gretna before finally having I-80 closed from border to border. 

NE 511 shows that Highway 30 is open, however is still closed from Kearney to Shelton. Roads in the Eastern half of the state still show being closed or being worked on by crews. The NDOT states if you have to travel, drive slowly, buckle up and increase following distance.
