Wauneta, Neb. - The Chase County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the following information in the interest of public awareness.

On December 14, 2025, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a fuel theft occurred in Chase County. An investigation was initiated on December 15, 2025, when deputies responded to Crossroads in Wauneta, Nebraska, regarding the theft of approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel.

During the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office was able to obtain video footage of the individual and vehicle involved in the incident. 

At this time, the suspect remains at large. 

The suspect is believed to be a male, wearing a gray sweatshirt, white sweatpants tucked into boots, and a trapper-style hat.

Pending charges include Nebraska Statute 28-511(B), Theft by Unlawful Taking, with a value between $1,500 and $5,000.

The Chase County Sheriff’s Office advises the public and local businesses to remain vigilant, as incidents of this nature are likely to occur again. Investigators note that offenders often target an area multiple times before moving on.

Five state senators took Pillen administration offer to tour state prison converted to federal migrant detention center Monday

LINCOLN — Five of Nebraska’s 49 state lawmakers Monday toured the controversial ICE migrant detention center in McCook, taking the Pillen administration up on a group invite to walk through the converted prison.&nbsp;

The lone Democrat participating, State Sen. Margo Juarez of Omaha, estimated that between 100 and 150 migrants, all of them men, were being held at what state and federal officials call the “Cornhusker Clink.”&nbsp;

State prison officials have declined to provide a detainee population count or daily average, citing security concerns.

Except for new fencing, Juarez said much of the physical facility looked similar to what she had seen when she arrived unannounced in September, when the McCook prison still operated as the state’s Work Ethic Camp, aimed at stepping people toward lives outside of prison.&nbsp;

Several detainees of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Monday were outside exercising, she said. A TV, a small library and a medical office were visible.&nbsp;

Some detainees inside played cards, according to observations by other senators on the tour, a group that included State Sens. Myron Dorn of Adams, Tom Brandt of Plymouth, Rob Clements of Elmwood and Dan Lonowski of Hastings.

Some key differences this time,&nbsp; Juarez said, were the backgrounds, languages and cultures of those being held at the center, which previously held Nebraska inmates nearing release.&nbsp;

The lawmakers told the Examiner the current detainees represented multiple countries, including Russia, India, Somalia, Mexico and Guatemala.&nbsp;

“I still think that how this is being done is wrong, and I’m not happy the place exists,” Juarez said after the visit, which lasted more than an hour.&nbsp;

But she and the other participating senators said the facility appeared clean, orderly and that detainees had access to visitors and a list of pro bono lawyers.

Juarez said she remains frustrated with federal immigration laws and enforcement tactics and said that pressure for change should be placed on Congress and at the ballot box.

“That change is what is needed so we’re not wasting our federal tax dollars,” she said, citing studies that immigration arrests under the Trump administration continued to increase but that an&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2025/12/12/repub/a-larger-share-of-ices-arrested-immigrants-have-no-criminal-record/">ever-lager share of arrests&nbsp;</a>were solely for immigration violations and not for crimes the administration said would be its focus.

The tour of the McCook facility was offered to all 49 senators in the officially nonpartisan Legislature&nbsp; two days after State Sen. Michaela Cavanaugh of Omaha publicly criticized Gov. Jim Pillen’s administration for twice denying her entry on Nov. 12 and 13 to the McCook facility.

Cavanaugh initially arrived unannounced to the McCook facility Nov. 12, citing a state law that says members of the Legislature can enter such a state facility “at any time.” She was rejected and tried again the next morning, on Nov. 13, after alerting the Department of Correctional Services the prior evening.

Pillen on Monday said in a statement that the McCook facility has been up and running in its new role since November and said Monday was “a good opportunity for senators to come and see first-hand the operational aspects of the detention facility.”

Legislators were required to fill out a form by the end of the work day Friday to attend, which was sent to federal officials prior to the visit.

A Pillen spokesperson said reporters were not allowed on the Monday tour, which was led by Rob Jeffreys, the state’s director of Correctional Services. The Examiner spoke to the five lawmakers afterward.

Jeffreys had told Cavanaugh that her alert in November was problematic, as it came with notice that was too short. Furthermore, he and a spokesperson for the Pillen administration said they interpret state law differently as it relates to entry to the McCook facility.&nbsp;

The state contracts with and is paid by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to house the federal detainees at the McCook center while the detainees await deportation to other countries.

Cavanaugh declined to participate in the tour, saying she had previous commitments and also that it was unclear last week whether lawmakers would be allowed to bring a pen and paper into the facility, “let alone a phone” to perhaps record observations. She said one of her main goals was to ask questions of detainees and gather information in the event they needed services.

Lawmakers on the tour said they did not bring phones on the tour, but had access to staff members to answer questions. Some questions, including the average number of detainees each day, were not answered.

Senators said they were told that the range of time behind bars at the McCook facility ranged from a day for some, while others have been there since it pivoted to federal use.&nbsp;

Pillen said earlier that detainees started to arrive in early November and that he had expected 200 by Thanksgiving and up to 300 when other facility modifications were completed. The Republican state senators on the tour agreed with Juarez’s estimate that between 100 and 150 detainees were being held at the center on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Corrections Department said the number of detainees housed at the McCook facility “fluctuates regularly,” and that federal officials asked the state not to disclose numbers.

Brandt said the group was told many of the detainees are transported to McCook from the Omaha and North Platte airports, but that senators were not told the cities or states where the ICE detainees were originally arrested.&nbsp;

The five senators said they didn’t personally talk to detainees but said they were not prohibited from doing so.&nbsp;

They said at least some detainees had access to electronic tablets.

“It was very clean, well kept, very well run,” Dorn said of the former Work Ethic Camp facility.&nbsp;

“It seemed very peaceful, the dining room where they eat was nice,” said Clements. He said phone numbers for various foreign consulates were posted on a wall, and he could see a bank of phones available for detainee use.

The senators saw technology that allows detainees to attend immigration court hearings remotely.&nbsp;

Lonowski said he was impressed with the professionalism of staff, who appeared to be from the local area.

Dorn said he would have liked to see more lawmakers, but he said some had other commitments.&nbsp;

“I definitely expected a few more,” he said, saying he thought up to 15. “I’m glad five showed.”

Prior to the state senator visits, McCook Mayor Linda Taylor and McCook Police Chief Kevin Hodgson had their own tour of the facility.&nbsp;

Pillen’s statement said construction begins this week to expand the facility’s capacity from 200 to 300 detainees.&nbsp;

He said that as a federal detention center, compensation to Correctional Services,&nbsp; based on the expected use of the facility and costs associated with providing services to ICE, will be $2.45 million per month.&nbsp;

The arrangement with ICE should clear the state about $14.25 million annually, Pillen said. The current contact expires Sept. 29, 2027.

Nebraska lawmakers tour McCook ICE jail, call it orderly, clean and say it detains 100-150 migrants

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) has received reports of Influenza A cases in the health district and is seeing influenza (the flu) starting to go around Nebraska and in many parts of the United States. Flu activity usually increases in the fall and winter, and we are now beginning to see more cases.

Influenza is a virus that infects your nose, throat, and lungs, and can spread to other organs in severe cases. It is usually grouped into 2 categories, Influenza A and Influenza B. Influenza A tends to make people sicker than B.

This year virus experts are watching a new strain of influenza called subclade K, which is an Influenza A virus. While it is normal for flu viruses to change from year to year, the subclade K strain is one that health officials are keeping a close eye on because it has changed a lot from the version that went around last year.

During last year’s flu season, 86 people visited emergency rooms for influenza like illnesses in southwest Nebraska. Most of the visits happened in December, January, and February. Getting a flu shot is the best way to protect yourself and the people around you. The flu vaccine can help prevent serious illness, keeping you from missing school or work, or ending up in the hospital.

Even though flu season has already started, it is not too late to get your flu shot, especially before the holiday season when many people gather indoors. It takes the body about two weeks to build immunity so now it is the perfect time to get your flu shot if you haven’t already. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that everyone 6 months and older get a flu shot every year.

“Getting a flu shot is one of the simplest ways to protect your family and community,” said Melissa Propp, Clinic Manager. “With the holidays coming up, now is the perfect time to get vaccinated. We want everyone to stay healthy and enjoy the season.”

North Platte, Neb. - Angela Hipp of Community Connections has been named The Post and Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers Community Hero for Kids this month, an honor recognizing her dedication to mentoring and supporting young people in North Platte.

Hipp said receiving the recognition was meaningful and affirming. “It’s amazing. It feels wonderful because, you know, we all want to be recognized for the things that we’re passionate about,” she said. “And I’m really passionate about my job, and I love the people that I work with and the kids that I work with. And when somebody thinks that I’m doing well with it, that feels really good.”

Hipp has been with Community Connections for 10 years and said the award prompted reflection on her journey and her connection to the community. “Maybe sometimes at 10 years, you start to think about, like, the past and how you’ve come through your job and where you’re at and your whole life,” she said. “And how much I love being a part of this community… and so feeling a lot more grounded in my community.”

As the coordinator of the mentoring program, Hipp explained her role focuses on connecting kids with mentors and building support systems. “I am the coordinator for the mentoring program,” she said. “And so I find mentors for kids… I find someone to spend some time with a child to hang out. But I also plan activities and gatherings for all of us so that we feel like we’re all a part of something together.”

Hipp said one of the most meaningful indicators of impact comes from annual surveys completed by youth and mentors. “Seeing what kids say when they can say it completely anonymous… really stands out to me,” she said. “They talk about what it has meant to them to be a part of the mentoring program and what it’s meant to have a mentor.”

She added that mentoring helps kids feel more connected and supported. “Just for them to have someone to talk to and feel like somebody cares about them,” Hipp said.

In addition to coordinating the program, Hipp is also a mentor herself. “I do. I have one mentee,” she said, noting they have been matched for nearly three years. Reflecting on the experience, Hipp added, “Those kids, you’re not just changing their lives, but they’re changing your life in the process.”

Hipp said being described as a safe person for kids aligns with the purpose of her work. “I think that’s the whole point of what I’m doing,” she said. “That I know there are kids that often feel like there’s not someone for them that they feel safe with… so we really try to create that space for them.”

Her passion for mentoring began years earlier while raising her daughters as a single parent. “I remembered thinking how much that would mean for my kids to have that extra support person in their life,” she said. “And I realized that all kids need that. They need to feel like somebody is recognizing who they are.”

Hipp said building trust with kids takes time and consistency. “It takes time and just showing up repeatedly,” she said. “A lot of dedication.”

Community Connections’ mentoring program has served North Platte for more than 20 years. Hipp said its strength lies in its mentors and flexibility. “One mentoring pair’s journey is going to look totally different than somebody else’s, and that’s OK,” she said.

Looking ahead, Hipp said the program continues to focus on youth mental health and positive development. “One of the things we’ve been doing… is really focusing on gratitude with our young people,” she said. “Looking at the positive things in their lives and looking at the positives in our community.”

When asked what message she would share with the community, Hipp emphasized the importance of everyday support. “I think that everybody needs to just approach their interactions with young people with a mentoring mindset,” she said. “There’s a lot of opportunities to show up for kids and make sure they know that they feel safe in our community.”

A 49-year-old Ogallala woman died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash Saturday morning at a Madison County intersection, authorities said.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred about 8 a.m. Dec. 13 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and Highway 32 on the edge of Madison.

According to investigators, a white 2020 International straight truck traveling west on Highway 32 failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a silver 2017 Jeep SUV that was traveling south on Highway 81. The Jeep was forced into the southwest ditch, where it came to rest. The straight truck spun around, came to rest facing east on Highway 32 and tipped onto its side in the southwest ditch.

The driver of the Jeep, Robin Cobaugh of Ogallala, was transported by Madison Rescue to Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk with life-saving measures in progress, authorities said. She later died from her injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the straight truck, 54-year-old Jose Figueredo, was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and motor vehicle homicide. He is being held in the Madison County Jail.

Authorities said seat belts were in use by both drivers at the time of the crash.

Agencies responding to the scene included the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Volunteer Fire and Rescue and the Nebraska State Patrol. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the State Patrol.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. - A fugitive wanted nationwide since 2018 was taken into custody in North Platte after deputies confirmed he was the subject of a full extradition warrant, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they received information Saturday, Dec. 13, that Jorge Fonseca-Dominguez was staying at a residence in North Platte. Further investigation confirmed Fonseca-Dominguez was wanted on a nationwide extradition warrant and was listed on the U.S. Marshals Service most wanted list.

Authorities said Fonseca-Dominguez had been a fugitive from justice since 2018. He was previously sentenced to 10 months in prison for illegal re-entry into the United States.

The sheriff’s office said Fonseca-Dominguez violated the conditions of his supervised release by illegally returning to the United States after being deported and by failing to report to his probation officer.

According to law enforcement, Fonseca-Dominguez has an extensive criminal history that includes disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, driving while intoxicated and multiple drug-related charges.

Fonseca-Dominguez was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Lincoln County Detention Center, where he is being held pending extradition.

Nationwide Fugitive Arrested in North Platte, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Says

(North Platte, Nebraska, December 12, 2025) – With the holiday season upon us, the Tourism Advisory Council (TAC) of North Platte has decided to continue our tradition of gifting two employees of a tourism driven business a basket of goodies to help them put together their holiday feasts! Each business that is a member of TAC puts in the name of one employee or volunteer from their organization that they would like to gift a meal to. These names are drawn, and one Thanksgiving basket is given, and one Christmas basket is given. TAC provides the turkey for the Thanksgiving basket and the ham for the Christmas basket, and the side dishes are donated by TAC members. This year the recipient of the Thanksgiving basket is an employee of the Avid/Candlewood Suites and they received their meal the week of Thanksgiving. The recipient of the Christmas basket is an employee of the Quality Inn, and their basket will be delivered the week of Christmas.

The purpose of the Tourism Advisory Council is to advance the tourism industry in the City of North Platte/Lincoln County. We raise the standard and upgrade the economy of the tourism/lodging industry and maintain a front-line training program for all front-line employees because they all have a direct influence on tourism traffic. We also encourage and maintain truthfulness and fair play in advertising and general business practices, and we try to bring about a better public understanding of the aims and benefits of the tourism industry. We are continually working to establish a forum where ideas, information, and experience regarding the tourism industry can be exchanged to help better us all.

When we all work together to increase tourism within our community and to educate people about the benefits that tourism has on our community, we are more successful. It takes a lot of hard-working individuals to keep every business of TAC not only running but succeeding. That is why it is important to us that we recognize one of these individuals by gifting them this holiday basket. NORTH PLATTE — With the National Finals Rodeo underway in Las Vegas, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee is inviting fans to gather for a special watch party tonight, Dec. 12,&nbsp; at the Lincoln RV Park.

Committee members Shelli Arensdorf and Heather Harwager said the event was inspired by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, which encouraged major rodeos nationwide to host viewing gatherings and supplied official NFR merchandise for giveaways.

“We got notification from the PRCA asking if committees would want to do a watch party, and they’d give us some swag and things to give away,” Arensdorf said. “That’s how it all started.”

The watch party falls on Round 9 of the NFR, a night when world title races typically tighten. Harwager said doors open at 7 p.m., with the live feed of the rodeo beginning at 7:45 p.m.

Guests can arrive early for a nacho bar, cash bar, and drawings for NFR-themed prizes. Admission is $10 at the door, and no advance tickets are required. An NFR pool drawing will also be available.

Harwager said the evening is designed to celebrate rodeo fans while also thanking the volunteers who help stage the Buffalo Bill Rodeo each June.

“Our rodeo and Nebraskaland Days are all made up of volunteers,” Arensdorf said. “It’s a way to give back to them and thank them for the time they give every year.”

While preparing for the watch party, the committee is also planning for future rodeos. Arensdorf said many contract acts are booked through 2029, and she will travel to upcoming conventions to secure additional entertainers.

“If you enjoy rodeo — and especially the Buffalo Bill Rodeo — this night has your name on it,” Harwager said. “Come early, grab some nachos, pick a good spot and enjoy Round 9 with us.”

American Red Cross Hosts Holiday Blood Drives in Central Nebraska

Republicans call his visit ‘opportunistic and disappointing,’ say it ‘does nothing to help’ Lexington

LEXINGTON, Neb. — Across the street from a Tyson beef plant set to close at the end of January, Nebraska U.S. Senate candidate Dan Osborn accused the company of breaking a century-old law aimed at preventing anti-competitive behavior by meatpackers.

Osborn, a registered nonpartisan running against U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., in 2026, pointed to his time as a former labor leader in an Omaha Kellogg’s plant to say he knows “what it feels like” to give a company “complete loyalty” and said workers feel betrayed. He said Tyson’s quarterly earnings report won’t feel the ripple effects that the town will face.

He said Tyson is trying to maximize profits at the expense of producers and customers in violation of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/packers-and-stockyards-act/faq#:~:text=Answer:%20The%20Packers%20and%20Stockyards%20Act%20(the,in%20the%20livestock%2C%20meat%2C%20and%20poultry%20industries." target="_blank">the Packers and Stockyards Act</a>, a federal law passed in 1921. That law was meant to promote competitiveness and fair practices in the livestock, meat and poultry industries and ensure&nbsp;payment protection. The law also prohibits deception and fraud in those markets.

Tyson officials had no immediate comment.

Osborn called the move to close the plant and not sell it to a competitor “market manipulation” and said Tyson is “destroying 5 percent of America’s beef processing capacity.” Basel Musharbash, an antitrust lawyer from Texas, also spoke at the press conference, saying the “law is on Lexington’s side.”

“The legal analysis here is pretty straightforward,” Musharbash said. “The Lexington plant accounts for around 5% of the nation’s cattle.&nbsp; By shutting down a plant that slaughters such a large portion of the cattle in this region and the country, Tyson will single-handedly reshape the nation’s cattle markets from boom to bust.”&nbsp;

Musharbash said the move would force Nebraska “ranchers to accept lower prices, and Tyson will be able to make higher profits.”

In response to the plant closure, the U.S. Department of Agriculture told the Nebraska Examiner this week that it would “continue to monitor the closure of the plant to ensure compliance with the Packers and Stockyards Act, including ensuring that livestock sellers are issued timely and accurate payments.”

Lexington, a west-central Nebraska city home to more than 10,000 people, has been dealing with the aftermath of Tyson’s decision to close the plant, which will result in the combined layoffs of up to 3,200 workers. Osborn asked where are state federal delegation.

“The people of Lexington need their elected officials to fight now more than ever,” Osborn said. “They don’t have time for reports to come out and investigations to happen. … The law that’s been on the books for over 100 years should be enforced. … So pick up the damn phone, call [U.S. Agriculture Secretary]&nbsp;Brooke Rollins and get the USDA to enforce the law.”&nbsp;

Ricketts, in a call Wednesday with reporters, said his team is looking into any allegation of wrongdoing by Tyson. Ricketts said he had talked with Tyson CEO&nbsp; Johnny King about “making sure that that facility can continue to be used for job creation.”

Gov. Jim Pillen, a Republican whose family runs a hog operation based in Columbus, has said the state got its “butts kicked” by the closure. State&nbsp;agencies have&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/agencies-groups-reach-out-to-tyson-workers-as-lexington-beef-plant-closure-nears/">partnered with Lexington nonprofits and other groups</a>&nbsp;to help the workers affected.

But Ricketts’ campaign and several elected Republicans criticized the visit to&nbsp;Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, with U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith saying the congressional delegation is working with the governor to help the people of Lexington find new jobs and connect them with available help.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Dan Osborn parachuting in for a press conference does nothing to help the Lexington community,” Smith said.

Nebraska 1st District U.S. Rep. Mike Flood, a Republican from Norfolk, has emphasized that the state dealt with a similar Tyson plant closure in 2006 in his hometown. Flood, in a video posted on social media by his office, said it&nbsp;“stripped the plant bare” and the property couldn’t be used as a beef processing facility.

He said the plant still sits empty today.&nbsp;

Former U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., criticized Osborn during his 2024 Senate race against her for helping drive the Omaha Kellogg’s plant out of business. Its leaders announced the plant would close in 2026, though the union leaders who followed Osborn didn’t blame the concessions he negotiated.

The Ricketts campaign, in a statement Tuesday, said Osborn was “heavy on grandstanding but offered no help or solutions to those impacted in Lexington.” Will Coup, a Ricketts campaign spokesperson, said Ricketts is working with state leaders to keep jobs in the community. He called the closure devastating.

“Senator Ricketts will continue approaching this like a natural disaster, with work carried out locally, directed by the state and supported by the federal government,” Coup said. “Nebraskans will overcome this together.”&nbsp;

Osborn’s campaign had organized a listening session for Tyson workers at a local restaurant in the middle of the day Tuesday, after the press conference, but no workers showed up. The Osborn campaign said they would reach out to the workers who had expressed interest in the listening session to set meetings with the former labor leader at a later date.&nbsp;

State Sen. Teresa Ibach of Sumner, in a social media post this week, said the closing of the Tyson plant was heartbreaking news for many families in her district and the community of Lexington. She criticized Osborn for “using this community’s hardship to score campaign points,” calling it&nbsp; “opportunistic and disappointing.”

Osborn said it was important to him to come to advocate for the workers because in his eyes, no one is advocating for them.

OGALLALA — The Ogallala City Council will meet Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at City Hall, where members will review several infrastructure items, financial updates and end-of-year certifications.

The meeting will open with routine consent agenda items, including approval of minutes from the Nov. 25 meeting. The council is also set to consider awarding the contract for the 2025 Western Diamonds Overflow Parking Lot Overlay project. Additional consent items include approval of City Maintenance Agreement No. 43, the accompanying Certificate of Compliance, and authorization to seek Requests for Proposals for SCADA system improvements for both the water and wastewater departments.

The agenda does not list any scheduled public hearings, though time has been reserved for public forum.

City Clerk-Treasurer updates will include the November 2025 financial report and discussion on rescheduling the council meeting currently set for Dec. 23, which falls during the holiday week.

Under department and committee recommendations, Community Development will provide a KCAD office update from Mary Wilson. The council will also consider the Year-End Certification of the City Street Superintendent, presented as Resolution 2322.

City Attorney and City Manager reports are expected to cover ongoing legal matters and project updates, respectively, followed by updates from council members.

The agenda notes that council may enter closed session if needed, and that all written materials to be discussed will be available to the public during the meeting as required under Nebraska law.

The meeting will be held at Ogallala City Hall, 411 East 2nd Street.
