North Platte, Neb. -&nbsp; Carla Warren has spent decades quietly becoming part of the family for countless North Platte children — a steady presence who shows up, celebrates small victories, and greets each morning with a smile. This month, she was named the Community Hero for Kids by The Post and Prairie Friends &amp; Flowers, an honor she met with genuine surprise and humility.

Her path into childcare wasn’t sudden. “Oh geez, that was a long time ago,” she laughs when asked how she first started working with kids. She began at North Platte Community Daycare in the infant room, later spent ten years with Head Start, and about fifteen years ago she started working for the school system. What began as a lunchroom para eventually became a role she knew was meant for her when coworkers encouraged her to apply for a special-needs para position. “That’s kind of where my heart is,” she says.

Carla points to family as one root of that calling. Growing up, she had a cousin with cerebral palsy who “was just always special to me,” and her parents influenced her outlook as well — they were foster parents to many children. Those early experiences, combined with a faith community she credits, helped shape a mindset that’s equal parts practical and deeply affectionate.

She speaks about the kids she works with with a soft, clear affection. “They teach me just as much as I teach them,” she says. “They’re open and loving and caring — especially the ones I work with at Adams. I’ve worked with kids I first met in Head Start who just graduated last year. That’s crazy.” Watching that arc — from preschool to graduation — is what Carla calls the most amazing part of the job.

There are difficult moments, of course, and she’s honest about that. Some days come with challenges, but those are quickly overshadowed by the small, human moments her work creates. 

“Then you go to the grocery store and from clear across the store you hear, ‘Miss Carla,’ and a kid comes running and gives you a hug,” she said with a smile. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Carla admires the courage of the children she supports. 

“They have so many struggles, but yet unconditional love,” she says. “They’re so strong — they’re not afraid of anything. They just try things — that’s awesome.” 

Her respect for their capability is direct and warm: “They can do anything that we can do.”

Some stories from her years stand out as reminders that her job stretches far beyond the classroom. Once, a single mother invited Carla to help on a family trip to Puerto Rico so the mom could relax and enjoy a vacation. 

“At first it was all a joke — the little girl came to school and said, ‘You can come in my suitcase,’” Carla remembers. When the mom really did call and ask her to come, the trip turned into an unforgettable experience and an example of how deep the bonds she builds with families can run.

When asked what it felt like to be nominated, Carla called the recognition “humbling” and a little surprising. “I’m just out there doing my job,” she said. The nomination came from a family she has known since preschool — a fact that makes the award as much about shared history as it is about her work.

Carla’s support system at home is part of what keeps her giving so much to others. 

“My husband, of course. He’s always my biggest fan,” she says, noting he’s the one who encourages her to slow down when she needs it. Faith and the church community are also central pillars in the way she approaches life and work.

Practical advice is never far from Carla’s lips. For anyone thinking about working in childcare or special education, she recommends trying it out first. “Shadow a day in the special needs room and see if it’s a fit,” she suggests, echoing the advice she received early in her career. “It’s not for everybody.”

Her gratitude extends to the families who have trusted her with their children, the co-workers who encouraged her, and the community that has embraced her over the years. “Once they’re part of my circle, they’re always part of my circle,” she says.

Quiet, steady, and full of heart, Carla Warren isn’t looking for praise. The Post & Prairie Friends & Flowers Present: This Month's Community Hero For Kids - Carla Warren

McCOOK, Neb. — A beloved McCook landmark known for its warm breads, pastries, and deep local roots has officially closed its doors. Embers Bakery &amp; Café announced Sunday that Saturday marked its final day of business, ending nearly seven decades of bakery tradition in the city’s downtown.

“With deep sadness, we’re here to share that Saturday was Embers Bakery’s final day,” owners Andrew and Alix Ambriz wrote in a Facebook post. “We are deeply grateful for everyone who supported us and especially thankful for our team… We will always cherish the memories we’ve made with all of you.”

The announcement came just one week after Embers shut down its new drive-thru location, which the owners said was part of “holiday planning.” The decision to close completely surprised many, though a few community members noted signs of struggle in recent days. One commenter on social media mentioned the bakery’s “bare shelves" last week, calling it “a red flag” that hinted at what was to come.

The bakery’s roots trace back to 1957, when Matt and Shelly Sehnert’s family first opened Sehnert’s Bakery. Over the decades, the shop became a McCook institution and a cornerstone of the downtown business district. Its legacy reached national acclaim in 2019 when Sehnert’s earned a James Beard America’s Classics Award — the only Nebraska business ever to receive the honor.

In August 2021, Andrew and Alix Ambriz purchased the bakery from the Sehnerts, later rebranding it as Embers Bakery &amp; Café. The couple expanded operations this spring with the addition of a drive-thru location and had teased plans for a new store in Kearney.

Several social media commenters defended the Ambriz family following the announcement, pointing to today’s economic hardships — from rising supply costs to staffing challenges — that continue to squeeze small, locally owned businesses. Others suggested that rapid growth, including the drive-thru expansion and Kearney plans, may have placed financial strain on the bakery.

The Ambriz family did not specify the reasons behind the decision to close but noted that they “succeeded at times and also made [their] mistakes along the way.”

While Embers’ ovens have gone cold for now, its impact on McCook’s culture — and its rare mark on Nebraska’s culinary map — will be remembered long after the final loaf left the oven.

The Hot Sheets: October 17, 2025

A 24-year-old man from Cozad has been charged with felony theft and criminal mischief following an incident at a Gothenburg convenience store Friday morning.

Gothenburg police were called to the store around 6:30 a.m. after a report that no employees were present. Officers arrived and confirmed the store was unattended, prompting them to contact the store manager.

Inside, a skills game had been broken into, with tools nearby. The employee who was scheduled to be on duty returned and reported that $4,000 had been deposited into two bitcoin machines, even though he still had more than $14,909 in his possession.

Christian Joyce was taken into custody and arraigned Tuesday in Dawson County Court. His bond was set at 10% of $10,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for next week, October 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.

His bond was set at 10% of $10,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for next week, October 28, 2025, at 11 a.m.</p><p>Joyce is also facing a shoplifting charge from an earlier incident at a Lexington store this month. “Handwashing is such a simple action that can have a big impact,” said Paula Wimer, Program Manager at SWNPHD. “Whether you’re at home, work, or school, washing your hands regularly helps stop the spread of germs and keeps everyone healthier.”

Hands should be washed any time they are visibly dirty and in these situations:

Ogallala, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council met Tuesday evening for a regular session that included approvals for new fire department volunteers, a zoning change for residential development, and upcoming street projects.

The council began the meeting by welcoming three new members of the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department: Tristan Markowski, John Morris, and Cory Wyckoff, the latter also serving as a new city officer.

A key item on the agenda was a public hearing and subsequent vote on rezoning the former Green Acres trailer park, located east of Travel America. Developer Brody Cleveland has acquired the property and plans to convert it into higher-density residential housing suitable for workforce needs. The council unanimously approved the rezoning from highway commercial to R3, clearing the way for Cleveland to plot the lots and move forward with infrastructure planning while addressing floodplain elevations.

The council also discussed a disputed engineering invoice related to prior construction stop orders. After reviewing the circumstances, the council agreed to cover part of the bill while clarifying that future projects would be responsible for securing engineering solutions to proceed.

In other business, the council acknowledged a contract for IT services with Mark Skinner, ensuring full transparency due to his family connection with the city clerk-treasurer. The move will address ongoing technical issues with the city’s proprietary email system, SmarterMail, which has increasingly conflicted with Outlook and other platforms.

Looking ahead, the council discussed plans for a half-cent sales tax proposal for infrastructure, potentially set for the November 2026 ballot. Officials highlighted that revenue from the tax, particularly from non-residents using local attractions like the resort and casino, could generate $700,000 to $900,000 annually for street and infrastructure projects.

Finally, the council approved an agreement for upcoming street work near City Hall. Construction is expected to begin Thursday, with some temporary closures of the drive-through window. Weather permitting, the projects—including work between Spruce and A streets—are scheduled to be complete by mid to late November.

City Manager Kevin Wilkins noted that despite some detailed discussions, the meeting concluded efficiently around 8:30 p.m.

As cold weather approaches, we spend more time indoors with friends and family. With close contact and cold dry air, we are more likely to encounter viruses that cause respiratory illnesses. Knowing the difference can help us figure out what is making us sick and what treatments may help.

Colds, flu, RSV, and COVID-19 can all have similar symptoms so it can be very challenging to know when it is serious or when to get medical care. For those more at risk of getting very sick, it is important to get tested so the right treatment can be given.

<b>COLDS:</b> Mild illness with symptoms usually starting 1 to 3 days after exposure. Symptoms include cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, watery eyes, and sneezing. Colds may last up to 10 days. Younger children are more likely to have colds, often 3 or more times per season. There is no vaccine or treatment that can combat a cold, though rest and over-the-counter medicines can help with symptoms.

<b>INFLUENZA (flu)</b>: Mild to severe illness with symptoms usually starting 2 to 4 days after exposure. Symptoms come on suddenly and include fever (not everyone will experience a fever), chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue (tiredness). Some people have stomach issues, though this is more common in children. Symptoms may last 5 to 7 days with a shorter time for people who got a flu shot. Flu shots are available every year and help decrease the severity of symptoms as well as how long it lasts. Influenza is treatable with antiviral medication if identified within 48 hours after symptoms start, so check with your medical provider.

<b>RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)</b>: Mild to severe illness with symptoms usually starting 5 days after exposure. Symptoms of RSV in children are fever, runny nose, loss of appetite, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. Symptoms in adults are low grade fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing and headache. Symptoms may last 2-8 days. Severe illness from RSV is more common in young children and older adults, with labored breathing, thick mucus, or whistling sounds while breathing. Seek medical care for any of these symptoms. Multiple RSV vaccines are now available for young children and seniors aged 60 and older, to prevent severe illness.

<b>COVID-19</b>: Mild to severe illness with symptoms usually start 2 to 14 days after exposure. Symptoms may include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you get COVID-19 and are at risk of getting very sick, treatments are available that can reduce your chances of needing to be hospitalized, so check with your medical provider or local pharmacy. OGALLALA — The women of Keith County are proving, once again, what can happen when purpose meets generosity.

100 Women Who Care – Keith County held their fall meeting Monday night at The Hayloft, gathering to reconnect and renew their commitment to local impact. Since the group began, members have collectively raised an impressive $222,425 for area nonprofits — each quarter aiming to raise $10,000 in just one evening of giving.

This week’s meeting carried a special message of rebuilding and growth, as members looked to welcome new faces and reengage past participants. “This is our moment to rebuild,” organizers shared in the event announcement. “Let’s invite fresh energy, new faces, and big hearts into our group.”

Their collective giving once again made a difference — with Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy selected as the final giving recipient of 2025.

The organization continues to encourage women to get involved, whether by attending meetings or contributing from afar. Members can join with a $100 quarterly donation that goes directly to local causes.

The next gathering for 100 Women Who Care – Keith County is scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026.

Together, they continue to make Keith County stronger — one generous woman at a time.

                    </figure><p>OGALLALA — The women of Keith County are proving, once again, what can happen when purpose meets generosity.</p><p>100 Women Who Care – Keith County held their fall meeting Monday night at The Hayloft, gathering to reconnect and renew their commitment to local impact. Since the group began, members have collectively raised an impressive $222,425 for area nonprofits — each quarter aiming to raise $10,000 in just one evening of giving.</p><p>This week’s meeting carried a special message of rebuilding and growth, as members looked to welcome new faces and reengage past participants. “This is our moment to rebuild,” organizers shared in the event announcement. “Let’s invite fresh energy, new faces, and big hearts into our group.”</p><p>Their collective giving once again made a difference — with Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy selected as the final giving recipient of 2025.</p><p>The organization continues to encourage women to get involved, whether by attending meetings or contributing from afar. Members can join with a $100 quarterly donation that goes directly to local causes.</p><p>The next gathering for 100 Women Who Care – Keith County is scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026.</p><p>Together, they continue to make Keith County stronger — one generous woman at a time.</p>

Union Pacific Railroad is continuing its long-standing support of Nebraska communities, awarding more than $300,000 in grants across the state through its Community Ties Giving Program — including several organizations in North Platte and Ogallala.

In North Platte, four nonprofits received funding for projects that strengthen community engagement and growth. The recipients include the Golden Spike Tower &amp; Visitor Center, Habitat for Humanity International, the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, and the North Platte Community College Foundation.

Each organization plays a unique role in supporting local quality of life — from preserving North Platte’s rail heritage to expanding affordable housing, education, and community development initiatives.

Meanwhile, in Ogallala, the Front Street Cowboy Museum was among this year’s Nebraska grantees, recognized for its work preserving local history and enriching the region’s tourism and cultural identity.

Union Pacific distributed more than $4 million nationwide to 430 nonprofit organizations this year, focusing on projects that align with the company’s four core giving priorities: safety, workforce development, community vitality, and environmental sustainability. Grant amounts ranged from $5,000 to $30,000, helping drive measurable impact in towns and cities across 23 states.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council will meet Tuesday, October 14, at 7 p.m. at City Hall, located at 411 East 2nd Street. The meeting will cover a range of topics, including a rezoning request, an information technology contract, and several city project updates.

The evening will begin with roll call and the consent agenda. The council is expected to approve three probationary members for the Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department — Tristan Markowski, John Morris, and Cory Waychoff.

A public hearing will follow to discuss a request from Planning and Zoning to rezone property described as a tract in the NE SW¼ Outlots of Section 8, Township 13 North, Range 38 West of the 6th P.M. in Keith County. The parcel, owned by Brody Cleveland, is currently zoned as C-4 Business District for interstate highway use. The proposal would change it to R-3 Residential District for high-density housing.

During the clerk-treasurer’s report, the council will review minutes from the September 23 meetings, along with the September financial report and an invoice from Dickinson Land Surveyors related to Planning and Zoning work.

The council will also consider opening a contract with Mark Skinner for information technology services. Another item on the agenda calls for dissolving the Interlocal Cooperation Act Agreement that created the Ogallala Public Infrastructure Agency. The rezoning request for Brody Cleveland’s property will come up again later in the meeting under Ordinance 1447.

The Street Department will present an agreement for professional services related to construction engineering for work planned along East 2nd Street between East C and East D Streets, as well as on West 2nd Street from West A to Spruce Streets.

Reports from the city attorney, city manager, and city council members will close out the meeting. City Manager Bruce Smith is expected to provide updates on ongoing projects.

The public is encouraged to attend, and time will be set aside early in the meeting for community comments. Copies of all written materials to be discussed will be available for the public to review at the meeting, in accordance with Nebraska law. The council also reserves the right to enter closed session if necessary.

Ogallala, NE — Street construction is set to begin Wednesday, October 15, on East 2nd Street between East C and East D Streets. The project is expected to last about three weeks.

During construction, the drive-thru at the City Administration Building will be closed, meaning utility payments cannot be made through that access point.

Residents with mobility issues can still make payments by calling the City Clerk’s Office at 308-284-3607. Staff will meet them in the parking lot just east of the Administration Building to assist with payment.

City officials thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the construction period.

The two-day event will draw 95 golfers from across the state to the Lake Maloney Golf Course. Along with the participants, we are expecting many friends and family to travel alongside their girls to support them. Tee times will begin from holes one and ten at 9:00am on Monday, October 13th, weather permitting.

Visit North Platte, in partnership with Lake Maloney Golf Course, was awarded a four-year commitment with NSAA to host Class C Girls State Golf. The 2025 tournament will be the third year of that agreement. This event is predicted to generate approximately $41,250 in visitor spending in the North Platte area.

Each year there is a need for numerous volunteers to help make the event run smoothly alongside the NSAA officials, Visit North Platte, and Lake Maloney Golf Course. Volunteer recruitment has a significant impact on the day-to-day operations of the tournament.

Bringing Sports Tourism to North Platte through Golf

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala Livestock Auction shattered records Thursday during its Special Stocker &amp; Feeder Sale, setting 37 new barn records — including two national all-time highs.

The Oct. 9 sale featured standout performances across multiple weight divisions, highlighted by 3-, 4-, 6-, and 7-weight steers reaching unprecedented prices.

In the 4-weight division, 17 head averaging 406 pounds sold for $595 per hundredweight, and 144 head at 430 pounds brought $587. Both sales now rank among the top 10 all-time nationally, while accounting for nine of the 10 highest 4-weight sales in Ogallala barn history.

The market remained strong across middle-weight classes, with new records set for every 5- and 6-weight sale. A new barn record was also established in the 7-weight category, where 60 head averaging 778 pounds sold for $412.50.

The 8-weight division followed suit, as 58 head at 864 pounds brought $382, marking the second-highest price for that class in barn history.

Both sales now rank among the top 10 all-time nationally, while accounting for nine of the 10 highest 4-weight sales in Ogallala barn history.</p><p>The market remained strong across middle-weight classes, with new records set for every 5- and 6-weight sale. A fifth positive case of rabies in an animal has been reported to Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD). This positive rabies test was from a bat in Frontier County. This is the second positive bat in southwest Nebraska for 2025, and the highest number of rabies cases in a year since 2015.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and is found in bats and other warm-blooded animals. Rabies is spread through the saliva or blood of an infected animal, which can include a bite or contact with an infected bat.

“Bats migrate in late summer and early fall, so increased activity is normal this time of year,” explains Melissa Propp RN, Clinic Manager at SWNPHD. “A bat with rabies may have unusual behavior such as being active during the day, inability to fly, or seeking contact with humans.”

Always avoid touching bats with your bare hands. Bat bites can be very small and difficult to see, making it hard to know if you had contact. If you think you have been bitten or scratched by a bat, wash the area with soap and water right away and seek medical attention.

Pets are also at risk of rabies exposure from bats or stray animals near your home. Rabies is fatal to pets and once an animal shows signs of the disease it is too late for treatment. The most important way to help your pet is to make sure they are up to date on vaccinations, which will protect them if they are ever exposed to a rabid animal.

When possible, limit your pet from situations where they may encounter bats, skunks or stray animals to reduce their risk of getting rabies. If your pet has had contact or been bitten by a wild or stray animal, attempt to bring the wild animal to a vet for testing if you can do so safely. Always use extreme caution when handling wild animals and avoid touching them with your bare hands.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rabies, contact your veterinarian immediately.
