ATLANTA, Ga. – Gray Media announced today the appointment of two veteran broadcast leaders to new roles within the company’s Nebraska stations.

Shannon Booth has been named General Manager of WOWT (NBC) in Omaha, Nebraska. She will succeed Jim McKernan, who is retiring on June 2 after an esteemed 44-year career in broadcasting.

Booth currently serves as General Manager for Gray’s KOLN (CBS) and KSNB (NBC) in Lincoln, as well as KNOP (NBC) and KNPL (CBS) in North Platte. For the past eight years, she has led market-dominating television, digital, and streaming operations serving communities across Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, North Platte, and surrounding areas.

Booth previously spent 18 years at KCRG in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she held leadership roles in news, digital, marketing, and creative. Her prior experience also includes positions at WOI (Ames), KTIV (Sioux City), WHO (Des Moines), and KWWL (Waterloo). She currently serves as President of the Board for the Heartland Cancer Foundation and is a past Board Chair of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association.

Succeeding Booth will be Jacque Harms, a seasoned broadcaster who returns to her home state to lead KOLN, KSNB, KNOP, and KNPL.

Harms began her media career in 1994 at KNOP in North Platte, where she worked as an anchor, reporter, photographer, producer, and news director. Most recently, she served as General Manager at KKTV (CBS) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and previously at WTOK (ABC) in Meridian, Mississippi. Under her leadership, WTOK earned recognition as the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters’ Small Market Station of the Year in 2024 and was named a finalist for the National Association of Broadcasters Service to America Awards in 2021.

Harms has been actively involved in industry organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Association of Broadcasters. She also helped launch the state’s inaugural MAB Student Conference and Women in Broadcasting awards program. The program, open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will run August 4–9 at Chase County Schools. Organizers say the production offers a valuable opportunity for young people to gain experience in acting, teamwork, and public speaking while building confidence and perseverance.

Missoula Children's Theatre, known for its fast-paced residency programs, will lead rehearsals and casting throughout the week, wrapping up with a public performance. K-12 Auditions will be Monday, August 4 at 2pm. Rehearsals August 4-8, and Performances August 8 and 9 at 7pm each night at the Chase County Schools Auditorium in Imperial.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council will meet Monday night at 7 p.m. in the council chambers to discuss a range of issues, including a proposed change to the city’s sewer disposal fee schedule and proclamations recognizing Police Week and EMS Week.

The council is expected to appoint Brady Caskey to the Community Redevelopment Authority. The public forum will include formal proclamations honoring local law enforcement officers and emergency medical service providers for their service to the community.

One of the main items on the agenda is an update on the city’s sewer and wastewater operations. Council members will review a proposed amendment to the Sewer Disposal Contractors Special Fee Schedule. The revision would establish a minimum charge of $80 for up to the first 1,000 gallons of liquid sewage delivered to the wastewater treatment plant. An additional $80 would be charged for every 1,000 gallons or partial amount thereafter.

City officials said the charges would be based on the size of the unloading tank, as the system is not currently equipped with a flow meter at the intake manhole.

City Manager Kevin Wilkens is also scheduled to provide updates on ongoing city projects.

Stocker/Yearling Tour set for June 17 in North Platte

HERSHEY, Neb. — The Hershey Village Board held there regular May meeting Monday night. Among the action items last night, the board excepted the resignation of Trustee Lucie Hengen-Reed. The vacancy on the Hershey Village Board of Trustees will be filled by appointment during a special meeting scheduled for May 21.

Hengen-Reed’s resignation was accepted on May 12, the village announced in an official notice. The special meeting to appoint her replacement will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Village Office, located at 104 S. Lincoln Ave. in Hershey.

The appointed trustee will serve the remainder of the term, which runs through December 2026.

Residents interested in filling the vacancy must be registered voters living within the village limits and be eligible for bonding. A letter of interest must be submitted to the Village Board of Trustees by 3 p.m. on May 20. Letters can be delivered to the Village Office, mailed to P.O. Box 353, Hershey, NE 69143, or emailed to <a>info@villageofhershey.com</a>.

One of the first things you learn in conversation with Sen. Paul Strommen is that he’s a detail guy. Whether digging into the state budget as a new member of the&nbsp;<a href="http://news.legislature.ne.gov/app" target="_blank">Appropriations Committee</a>&nbsp;or finding delight in the architectural wonder of his new workplace, the freshman senator doesn’t want to miss a thing.

For example, Strommen said colleagues sometimes ask if he’d like to take the “short cut” to the legislative chamber from his office on the north side of the building, but doing so would mean missing out on the second-floor north hall with its soaring ceilings and colorful mosaics.

“That’s the greatest walk,” he said. “I take the long way every day because it’s so spectacular. I see something new every time.”

That desire for new experiences, combined with a love of the outdoors, brought the native New Yorker to Colorado as a young man just out of high school. Strommen was born in Sleepy Hollow and grew up on Long Island, finding any work that would allow him to be outside, including taking members of the local yacht club to their boats as a summer job.

“I’m sure it sounds fancy,” he said, “but it was a blast — just another way to earn money as a teenager while also being on the water.”

Luckily for the aspiring outdoorsman, an uncle with a business in Colorado hired him in the early 1990s. Strommen fell in love with all that the state had to offer and decided on the University of Colorado-Denver for his studies.

There, he met his wife Kendra, who was attending law school. It was a moment that would start him on a path to the Unicameral. Kendra had grown up in Hershey, Nebraska, and still had family and deep ties in the area.

The couple moved to Nebraska in 2006, settling in Sidney in 2013. The western part of the state had many of the same amenities Strommen had loved in Colorado: golfing, camping, fishing, hunting and hiking – and the added bonus of fewer people.

“I’m sure it sounds strange coming from someone from New York, but sometimes when I’m in Lincoln, I find myself thinking that there are way too many people here,” he laughed.

Not that Strommen ever pictured himself in Lincoln other than to visit. Gaining a seat in the Legislature was not something the freshman senator had on his bucket list. He did, however, always have an interest in how government works.

Strommen, who works in the ethanol industry, was appointed to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2022. Around the same time, he decided to run for a seat on the Sidney City Council to see how he might contribute to his community’s success.

When term limits opened a seat in District 47 a few years later, Strommen saw it as an opportunity to have a broader impact in the region that has captured his heart.

While campaigning near Alliance, he had another chance to bring together his love of outdoor activities and his interest in community service. After seeing a newspaper article about Edison Red Nest, who runs a Native American youth lacrosse program, Strommen knew he had to meet him.

Himself a former lacrosse player and coach, he hadn’t found anyone else in Nebraska who played. The two connected and Strommen joined the kids for a scrimmage that turned out to be more than he bargained for.

“I hadn’t sprinted, hadn’t thrown a lacrosse ball in years,” Strommen laughed. “It was so much fun, but I could barely walk for three days after that.”

It’s that enthusiasm and willingness to jump in and not miss out on an experience that Strommen hopes to bring to his work at the Legislature.

“There’s so much information and so much to learn,” he said. “I’m looking forward to digging into debate and doing my best to advocate for residents in my district and across Nebraska.”

Strommen was born in Sleepy Hollow and grew up on Long Island, finding any work that would allow him to be outside, including taking members of the local yacht club to their boats as a summer job.“I’m sure it sounds fancy,” he said, “but it was a blast — just another way to earn money as a teenager while also being on the water.”Luckily for the aspiring outdoorsman, an uncle with a business in Colorado hired him in the early 1990s. Strommen fell in love with all that the state had to offer and decided on the University of Colorado-Denver for his studies.There, he met his wife Kendra, who was attending law school. It was a moment that would start him on a path to the Unicameral. Kendra had grown up in Hershey, Nebraska, and still had family and deep ties in the area.The couple moved to Nebraska in 2006, settling in Sidney in 2013. The western part of the state had many of the same amenities Strommen had loved in Colorado: golfing, camping, fishing, hunting and hiking – and the added bonus of fewer people.“I’m sure it sounds strange coming from someone from New York, but sometimes when I’m in Lincoln, I find myself thinking that there are way too many people here,” he laughed.Not that Strommen ever pictured himself in Lincoln other than to visit. Gaining a seat in the Legislature was not something the freshman senator had on his bucket list. He did, however, always have an interest in how government works.Strommen, who works in the ethanol industry, was appointed to the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2022. Around the same time, he decided to run for a seat on the Sidney City Council to see how he might contribute to his community’s success.When term limits opened a seat in District 47 a few years later, Strommen saw it as an opportunity to have a broader impact in the region that has captured his heart.While campaigning near Alliance, he had another chance to bring together his love of outdoor activities and his interest in community service. After seeing a newspaper article about Edison Red Nest, who runs a Native American youth lacrosse program, Strommen knew he had to meet him.Himself a former lacrosse player and coach, he hadn’t found anyone else in Nebraska who played. The two connected and Strommen joined the kids for a scrimmage that turned out to be more than he bargained for.“I hadn’t sprinted, hadn’t thrown a lacrosse ball in years,” Strommen laughed. “It was so much fun, but I could barely walk for three days after that.”It’s that enthusiasm and willingness to jump in and not miss out on an experience that Strommen hopes to bring to his work at the Legislature.“There’s so much information and so much to learn,” he said. “I’m looking forward to digging into debate and doing my best to advocate for residents in my district and across Nebraska.”

COZAD, Neb. — Authorities are investigating a devastating incident that left four members of a Dawson County family dead in what appears to be a murder-suicide at a home near Johnson Lake.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:45 a.m. Saturday in the Plum Creek Canyon #1 area of Johnson Lake. Inside the residence, deputies discovered the bodies of Jeremy Koch, 42; his wife, Bailey Koch, 41; and their two sons, Hudson Koch, 18, and Asher Koch, 16.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Jeremy Koch fatally stabbed his wife and sons before taking his own life. A knife believed to have been used in the killings was recovered at the scene.

The Nebraska State Patrol has taken the lead in the investigation, with assistance from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Eustis Fire &amp; Rescue, and the Dawson County Attorney’s Office. Autopsies have been ordered for all four individuals.

Bailey Koch’s father, Lane Kugler, confirmed the tragic discovery in a statement posted on social media Sunday.

"Yesterday morning, May 10, 2025, at 9:45 a.m., I found our two grandsons Hudson, 18, and Asher, 16, and our daughter Bailey, and our son-in-law Jeremy, dead laying in their beds,” Kugler wrote. “What I saw will haunt me the rest of my life.”

Kugler stated that Jeremy Koch had been struggling with severe mental illness for years. "Jeremy had been fighting mental illness for many, many years. His depression had turned into psychosis,” he wrote. “Bailey and Jeremy spent years and years seeking help and answers to Jeremy’s condition. Doctor after doctor, hospital after hospital, medication after medication, therapy after therapy. Treatment after treatment."

He praised Bailey Koch for her tireless advocacy for mental health awareness. “Bailey fought so hard to bring attention to those who needed help. She was a huge advocate for mental health,” Kugler wrote. “She spent countless hours on their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/anchoringhopeformentalhealth">Facebook page, Anchoring Hope for Mental Health: Jeremy &amp; Bailey Koch</a>. If you go to that page, you can read about how so many people thanked her for her open and honest writing about mental health.”

The tragedy comes on what should have been a celebratory day for the family—Hudson Koch was set to graduate Saturday afternoon with the Cozad High School Class of 2025. Bailey Koch was a special education teacher at Holdrege Public Schools and a former senior lecturer at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She and Jeremy owned and operated Natural Escapes, a business based in Cozad.

As the community grieves, law enforcement officials continue their investigation. No further details have been released at this time.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala Girls Basketball Team will host its first annual Penny Carnival fundraiser on Saturday, May 31, at the Prairie View Gymnasium.

The event, which begins in the afternoon, will feature a variety of family-friendly activities including carnival games, bingo, a silent auction, and a brisket supper offered by free-will donation. All proceeds will support the Ogallala High School girls basketball program.

“We’re excited to bring the community together for a day of fun while supporting our student-athletes,” said Coy Gager, head coach of the Ogallala girls basketball team. “This fundraiser will help cover summer basketball entry's, travel, and other program needs.”

Carnival games and activities will be available with ticket bundles priced at 20 tickets for $10, 40 tickets for $20, and 60 tickets for $30. Attendees can enjoy bingo for $1 per card, open to both kids and adults. A bounce house, face painting, and numerous kids’ games will also be part of the festivities.

The silent auction will include a range of donated items, with several high-value prizes expected to draw interest from across the community.

The Lady Indians return all but one player for next year, Ogallala made it to the district final in 2025, and ended the season 16-10.

The fundraiser is open to the public, and all community members are encouraged to attend.

The Pony Express Ride will also make stops in the area in Gothenburg, Ogallala and Sidney.

Now in its 18th year, the Pony Express Ride Across Nebraska is a statewide effort that raises awareness and advocates for increased funding for mental health programs through the Nebraska Legislature. Each year, a dedicated group of motorcycle riders departs from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, traveling along the I-80 corridor and stopping in communities along the way to collect letters of support written by local residents.

These letters, which call for stronger investment in mental health services, are gathered during community events hosted by local family support organizations. The ride culminates on Saturday, May 17th, at the State Capitol in Lincoln, where the letters are delivered directly to members of the Nebraska Unicameral.

The North Platte stop will feature an opportunity to meet the Pony Express Riders, sign letters of support, and participate in raising awareness about the importance of mental health. The burn ban applies to a wide swath of the state to help mitigate risks associated with potential grassland fires. The border runs south along U.S. Highway 81 from the South Dakota border to Highway 92. The line then goes west to U.S. Highway 281 and runs south to the Kansas border.

Gov. Pillen Extends Burn Ban in Western, Central Nebraska

OGALLALA, Neb. (May 9, 2025)&nbsp;— As spring continues to unfold across western Nebraska, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts are flocking to Lake McConaughy—Nebraska’s largest reservoir—for prime fishing, camping, and early-season recreation.&nbsp;

Post-spawn activity has shifted walleye into deeper water, but according to recent reports, anglers are still having success. Smallmouth bass activity has been particularly strong, with excellent results recorded at two recent fishing tournaments.&nbsp;

Water conditions remain favorable heading into mid-May. The current water level at Lake McConaughy sits at 3,239.2 feet elevation, equating to 1,069,200 acre-feet, or roughly 61.3% of the reservoir’s total capacity.&nbsp;

Shower houses are now in service at several major recreation areas, including Cedar View, Arthur Bay, and Lake Ogallala. Additional facilities at Lone Eagle, Little Thunder, and Martin Bay are expected to open soon, pending water quality test results.&nbsp;

All fish cleaning stations around the lake are open for use, and docks have been installed at multiple ramps including Diver’s Bay, Martin Bay (low water), Lemoyne, Cedar View, and both north and south ramps at Lake Ogallala.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds campers that&nbsp;reservation season begins May 20, and&nbsp;advance reservations are required&nbsp;for overnight stays at Lake McConaughy throughout the summer. Reservations can be made online at&nbsp;<a href="https://outdoornebraska.gov/">OutdoorNebraska.gov</a>.&nbsp;

A temporary&nbsp;campfire ban&nbsp;remains in effect for Nebraska state recreation areas in central and western parts of the state—including Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala—through&nbsp;May 10&nbsp;due to fire safety concerns.&nbsp;

The most recent water temperature reading at the dam was&nbsp;50 degrees Fahrenheit, signaling that peak fishing conditions are just around the corner.&nbsp;

Mid-Plains Community College Holds Commencement Ceremonies Today

OGALLALA, Neb. — A high-speed chase that began in Ogallala and spanned multiple counties has led to a federal prison sentence for a 20-year-old man from El Salvador. Michael Alexander Ayala-Ramirez was sentenced Wednesday to 70 months in prison for illegally possessing firearms, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Molsen.

The case unfolded last July 6, when an Ogallala police officer spotted a stolen pickup truck tied to a vehicle theft at Denver International Airport. When the officer attempted to make contact, Ayala-Ramirez — the driver — fled, sparking a high-speed chase that tore through Keith and Deuel Counties.

The chase ended near a rural farmyard in Deuel County after law enforcement successfully used stop sticks. Ayala-Ramirez and a passenger, Pablo Escobar-Alas, briefly hid under a vehicle before stealing another pickup and leading officers on a second chase. Authorities eventually stopped that vehicle as well and arrested both men.

Inside the bags they carried were four firearms, including one that had been reported stolen. A third suspect, Selvin Escobar-Rivera, fled on foot and was later arrested with another stolen handgun.

All three men had previously been deported and were in the U.S. illegally. The cases against Escobar-Alas and Escobar-Rivera are still pending.

The Driver's Ed course is for students ages 14-17. Students must have a valid learner's permit. The first course is scheduled for June 2-6 at the WNCC Sidney Campus. A second course is scheduled for July 7-11. The cost for the course is $200.

WNCC has secured a $10,000 grant from the Nebraska Department of Labor to provide tuition for 50 students who qualify based on household income.

Recent data from the Nebraska Department of Transportation highlighted trends for Western Nebraska and the need to expand the availability of driver's education.

"The state average for teens that take driver's education is 50%. In the Panhandle the rate is 20%," WNCC Workforce Training Director Doug Mader said. "More concerning is data that shows two of the worst counties for teen driver and passenger involved crash rates are here in western Nebraska. Working with NDOT and Panhandle Public Health District, our goal is to make a positive impact on safe driving outcomes for our region."

Lexington, Neb - At its May meeting, the Dawson Public Power District Board of Directors reviewed the district’s current bond debt and discussed preparations for the upcoming irrigation season.

The board examined bonds issued between 2016 and 2020, which carry interest rates ranging from 0.75% to 3.5%. These bonds have been instrumental in financing major infrastructure improvements. The board is also considering issuing a new bond to support future construction projects.

“The district’s history with bonding reflects sound business practices,” said new General Manager Alyssa Clemsen Roberts. “These strategies have helped maintain affordable rates while ensuring system reliability for our customers.”

As irrigation season approaches, the board voted to continue using the same load management control goal established in 2024.

Dawson County Sheriff Mark Montgomery requested the district donate labor costs to install a power line for a new law enforcement training center near Johnson Lake. The board approved a resolution to waive up to $10,000 in labor expenses. Any remaining construction costs will be billed to the sheriff’s department.

The board entered executive session to review a proposed wholesale power contract.

</li><li>Safety Director Dean Kunkee reported on recent accident statistics and discussed their potential impact on next year’s insurance premiums.
</li><li>Clemsen Roberts noted vendor concerns about possible supply chain disruptions that could delay material deliveries and affect pricing.
</li><li>The Highway 83 construction project, located south of North Platte, remains on schedule.

North Platte, Neb. — May 8, 2025 — North Platte Giving Day wrapped up yesterday with strong community support, raising more than $327,000 in online donations for 69 nonprofits across Lincoln County. Final totals, which will include in-person giving, are expected in the coming days, but organizers are already calling the event a major success.

Now in its tenth year, North Platte Giving Day is hosted by the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation and encourages residents to support a wide range of local causes — from the arts and education to healthcare and social services.

“We’re thrilled with the response,” said Eric Seacrest, Executive Director of the Foundation. “This event continues to show how much people care about their community and the organizations doing important work here.”

Participants had the chance to win part of over $100,000 in matching funds and cash prizes, which incentivized giving throughout the day. While exact figures will be released soon, early results show a strong uptick in engagement from donors across the county.

For residents in the Keith County area, another opportunity to give is just around the corner. Big Give Keith County is set to launch on June 1, offering similar support for nonprofits in that region.
