Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Geoff Exstrom who is the Director of Communications and Media Relations for the Omaha Supernovas, a brand-new professional volleyball team. Exstrom talks about his role with the team, training camp, season opener and more.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Nebraska's newest volleyball team, the Omaha Supernovas, are getting ready to kick off their inaugural season on January 24th, when they welcome the Atlanta Vibe to CHI. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm. The team, which has many Nebraskans excited from border to border, is loaded with high quality players.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One player on the training camp roster is D2 UNK former All-American setter and Kearney native Maddie Squiers has been turning heads during her time at camp. She was invited to the mini camp and then extended an invitation to the main training camp.&nbsp;&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE –The shelter recently wrapped up its holiday campaign and is grateful for all the support they have received from the community. The Connection Homeless Shelter also SMART RECOVERY, which stands for Self-Management in Recovery training program gets together every Thursday at 7:30pm at the shelter. NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way has wrapped up its giving, fall and year end campaign and so far, has raised around $128,000 out of the $200,000 goal and are paced towards the goal. Mid-Plains united way has officially opened the 2024-2025 Partner Agency Applications and to see if your organization is eligible, <a href="https://www.midplainsunitedway.com/application">click here</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - Jailyn Miller a Sutherland 6th grader isn't bugging around, she's won the Purple Rainbow Ribbon at the Nebraska State with her 4H Entomology projects. Miller who resides with her family near Tryon, but attends school in Sutherland stays busy each year, entered in multiple 4H projects. A few years ago she started collecting bugs with her father, and is now winning not only at the local fair, but in Grand Island at the State Fair with Entomology.&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Haven Smith, Executive Director from the Mid-Plains United Way and the pair discussed about the upcoming Holiday Café fundraiser event the united way is doing at the Holiday Craft Fair and Vendor Show this weekend and ways to help donate.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Mid-Plains United Way is providing a Holiday Cafe at the Holiday Craft Fair and Vendor Show that is going on this Saturday and Sunday at the D&amp;N Event Center in North Platte. Instead of a traditional concession stand of nachos, hot dogs, etc, this year, the united way will offer a Holiday Cafe with different breakfast and lunch menu items and beverages. The craft fair and vendor show runs Saturday from 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday from 10:00am-3:00pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The holidays can be a stressful time to donate, Smith talks about how you can take part in the community. Smith also talks about what is the best way of donating to the united way. If you would like to learn more, check out the podcast above.&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Prairie Arts Center Executive Holly Carlini about what's going on at the Prairie Arts Center. The duo chatted about the Statewide Holiday Passport, ladies night out and classes the PAC is offering.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - &nbsp;The 2023 Holiday Passport is officially underway and the PAC is one of 20 attractions on this years passport. All four floors at the PAC is full decked out in holiday decorations and will be on display until January 7th. The floors are decorated in different themes.&nbsp;

Ladies night out is going on tomorrow in downtown North Platte and the PAC will be providing games and activities. This years theme is Willy Wonka. Even thought you have to sign up, for folks who did not get signed up are still invited to come shop and check out the discounts.&nbsp;

Lastly, the PAC is offering different classes for anyone to enjoy. A fun one going on tomorrow is a beer tasting with Pal's Brewing Company and you get to paint with beer. The bank is collecting non-perishable food items at all 10 branches the bank runs. To donate food, you just need to take it to your local branch.&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath got the chance to talk with Andrea Wenburg about raising funds for Kenya. The funds will be used to purchase sewing machines to send over to Kenya.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - Communty member are gearing up for a fundraiser event involving Christmas caroling to raise funds to purchase 6 sewing machines to send to Kenya. The group is looking to raise $1,400 to purchase the 6 machines with. The machines will be used to create new uniforms for school children who attend Overcoming Faith Schools. The school has over 900 students.&nbsp;

The group will be caroling from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on December 22nd in North Platte. The club says for a suggested $50 donation, you can have the carolers come to your home or send the group to someone else's home. If you would like to donate, you can send checks to North Platte Rotary PO Box 2313, North Platte, NE 69103. NORTH PLATTE - This Sunday, is the Worldwide Candle Lighting for The Friends Compassionate Group as chapters will light off their candle at 7:00pm as the candles will stay lit for an hour in honor of a child who has passed away. The Compassionate Friends Group North Platte Chapter invites members from the public to arrive at the First Lutheran Church at 6:30pm to participate in the 7:00pm candle lighting event. Guests are asked to bring a candle, a picture if they choose too and the group ask guests if they can bring a votive candle.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Compassionate Friends Group is a worldwide group of people who have lost their children, grandchildren or lost someone and need folks to talk with. Members in this group meet once a month and will learn from one another. The group was founded over 50 years ago. This week, Habitat for Humanity and the North Platte Rotary club are doing a match day with the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is anywhere between 30-32% of their goal for the end of the campaign.

This Friday will be the community dinner. The free event is open to everyone who wants to enjoy a meal with the community. Turkey, mash potatoes are just a few of the items that will be available. NORTH PLATTE - The North Platte Elks Lodge #985 is hosting their annual Hoop Shoot challenge this upcoming Sunday at Adams Middle School in North Platte. The event is for ages 8-13 (age determined as of April 1st, 2024) and is free to participate. Doors will open around 12:30pm for sign ups. Girls will shoot at 1:00pm and boys will shoot at 2:00pm. Each shooter will have 25 free throw attempts.

The holiday time can be a joy but also a struggle. Donating during the holiday can help benefit yourself and also others. North Platte native Olivia Phillips (stage name Liv Faith) joined Derek Beck on Z93.5 Country Friday afternoon to chat about her debut country song "Settle Down".

Olivia is a student at UNL, her parents are Robyn Summers Foote and Jess Phillips both of North Platte. Liv's brother is Drew Phillips who is also a musician plays with the Drew Phillips Band and was recently named the opener for Michael Ray at next summers Lincoln County Fair in North Platte. North Platte native Olivia Phillips debuts song on Z93.5 Country Today

Post News Director chatted with Camon Landry from the Salvation Army and the duo recapped Thanksgiving week, chatted about the Red Kettle campaign and so much more.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE - The Salvation Army is officially in full swing during this holiday season. Last week, the Salvation Army did their food distributions box donations and donated over 150 boxes to families who signed up. Boxes included Turkey's, mash potatoes and so much more. Leftover food from the boxes was then donated to partner agencies of the Salvation Army.&nbsp;

The Salvation Army is also gearing up for their Christmas Community Dinner on December 8th starting at 5:00pm. The event is for anyone in the community who wants to attend. Also, the Red Kettle campaign is underway. In North Platte, there are 8 locations. Volunteers are needed and if you would like to volunteer to ring the bell,<a href="https://registertoring.com/"> click here</a>. If someone under the age of 18 wants to volunteer an adult or guardian must be with the Individual.&nbsp;

Post News Director Canon Rath chatted with Cassie Condon, Vice President of Operations for the North Platte Area of Chamber and Development talked about the Shop North Platte event that is going on tell December 12th.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE – Shop North Platte is officially under way and will continue on until December 12th. Shop North Platte was created to shop locally at North Platte businesses this holiday season. Over 30 local businesses are taking part in this year's event. Shoppers who shop locally have a chance to win $5,000. Shoppers will receive a blue ticket and every $10 spent, shoppers can earn another blue ticket. Folks just entering the business will also receive the blue ticket. The drawing is set for December 14th. Shoppers must be 18 and older to participate in the drawing.

Shop North Platte replaces the old passport system that was used for the past 4 years. “I absolutely loved the passport program as it highlighted our local entrepreneurs and small businesses that give so much back to our community... but our one-day program we felt just wasn’t enough,” said Cassie Condon. “We really wanted to find something that encouraged customer loyalty and raise more awareness for retail availability... we really wanted to expand it from a one-day program to a three-week program and reward people for shopping locally.”
