North Platte, NE — West Central District Health Department has confirmed that a mosquito pool in Lincoln County has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV), the first detection of the virus in our area this season.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people infected will not develop symptoms, some individuals — particularly older adults and those with weakened immune systems — may develop severe illness.

“This finding is a reminder that West Nile Virus is present in our community,” said Meghan Trevino, Executive Director of West Central District Health Department. “The best protection is prevention. We encourage everyone to take simple steps — like using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and removing standing water — to reduce mosquito bites and lower the risk of illness.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following precautions to reduce exposure:

· Use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

· Wear long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure when possible.

· Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes lay eggs (e.g., buckets, flowerpots, old tires, birdbaths).

· Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

OGALLALA, Neb. (July 30, 2025) — As the calendar turns to August, the energy is building at Ogallala Public Schools ahead of the first day of school on Wednesday, August 14. Superintendent Gene Russel says the district is eager to welcome students back with new programs, facility upgrades, and a strong emphasis on community support and student readiness.

Among the key initiatives this year is the “Kick Start to Kindergarten” program. Designed to help incoming kindergarteners ease into their new environment, the program gives students a chance to meet their teachers and experience a mock school day before the official first day of class.

“This helps take away the tears and anxiety for both kids and parents,” Russell said. “It’s a smooth transition that sets the tone for the year.”

Russel says students and families will notice major updates across the district, especially at Prairie View School, where modernization efforts include new record boards, upgraded trophy cases, a freshly painted gym, and a new video scoreboard. At the high school, renovations include remodeled restrooms and custom murals by local artist Brianna Benton, helping create a more engaging and modern atmosphere.

“We’ve worked hard to save over the last four or five years so we could reinvest in the student experience,” said Russel. “We believe our kids deserve to walk into a building that feels exciting and inspiring.”

One of the most significant proposals on the horizon is a possible expansion of the district’s preschool offerings. Ogallala Public Schools is exploring the addition of new preschool classrooms, potentially at the National Guard Armory, to help address a critical early education gap.

According to district data, about 60% of incoming kindergarten students have little to no formal preschool experience.

“We’re seeing too many kids show up not ready—socially, emotionally, or academically,” Russel said. “This expansion could help close that gap and offer free, accessible education to the students who need it most.”

The proposal is still under discussion and will be a topic at upcoming school board meetings in August and September, as the board finalizes its budget and levy.

Russel encourages community members to share their input early: “This is the time to get involved. We want to hear your thoughts before decisions are made.”

New Staff, Fall Sports and Community Spirit

Teachers officially report back to school on Friday, August 8, with returning staff beginning in-service training on Monday, August 11. Russell says the district is welcoming several new staff members this fall and is focused on getting everyone ready for a strong start.

And it wouldn’t be back-to-school season without fall sports. Volleyball, football, cross country, and girls golf all kick off the first week, and the district is rolling out some fun new additions to its concession stands—including soft-serve ice cream and a refreshed menu aimed at making game night the place to be in town.

“It’s going to be fun,” Russel said. “We’re working hard to enhance the experience for students, families, and fans.”

With energy high and plenty of excitement in the air, Ogallala Public Schools is set for a fresh start filled with community, commitment, and continued growth.

The Ogallala City Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday morning to consider a key step in the long-anticipated opening of the Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack just south of Interstate 80.

Scheduled for 8 a.m., the meeting will include a public hearing on an application for a Class C liquor license submitted by Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack, LLC. The proposed resort is located at 777 Pony Express Lane and is applying to operate under the name Lake Mac Casino Resort &amp; Racetrack.

Following the hearing, the council will review recommendations from city administration regarding the license. According to the application, the casino would be open from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

The casino is aiming to open its doors on August 10, with live horse racing expected to begin nine days later, on August 19.

The new resort is expected to bring jobs, tourism, and expanded entertainment options to the Ogallala area, and Wednesday’s vote marks a key regulatory hurdle in the development’s final approval process.

OGALLALA, Neb. (July 28, 2025) — The Keith County Fair is back this week in Ogallala, bringing a packed schedule of family-friendly entertainment, competitive events, and classic fair traditions to southwest Nebraska.

While the parade helped kick off the celebration on Sunday, the fair’s main lineup gets underway Tuesday, July 29, and runs through Saturday, August 2. Organizers say they’re especially excited for this year’s slate of events, which includes the return of crowd favorites like Survivor Games, a George Strait tribute concert, the Ranch Rodeo, and the wildly popular Combine Derby.

Survivor Games &amp; Family Night – Wednesday, July 30
Wednesday evening is themed as family night and features the third annual Keith County Survivor Games, a free-to-watch competition in the outdoor arena where teams of four tackle events like the tire flip, tank swim, and gate hop.

“It’s just a lot of fun, and we have different age divisions so everyone can participate,” said fair board member Makenzie Spurgin. Registration has been extended through Tuesday and is available on the Keith County Fair website and Facebook page.

The evening also features the annual BBQ, kicking off the night’s festivities before families move to the arena to cheer on the contestants.

Ranch Rodeo, Karaoke, and More – Thursday, July 31
Thursday brings a full day of 4-H events, culminating in an action-packed evening with the Men’s Ranch Rodeo, Bronc Riding, and Karaoke Night. Spurgin said the karaoke contest continues to be a crowd favorite, adding to the variety for all ages.

George Strait Tribute Concert – Friday, August 1
A major highlight of the week is Friday night’s performance by the Strait Country Tribute Band, which pays homage to country legend George Strait.

“If you’re a George Strait fan, you’ll want to be at this concert,” Spurgin said. “The performer looks and sounds just like him—it’s uncanny.”

VIP meet-and-greet tickets, which include drink tickets, are selling quickly, though general admission tickets are also available online or at the gate. A beer garden will be on-site.

Saturday Spectacular – August 2
Saturday is jam-packed with events starting early with the Fair Board Breakfast, Little Mr. Keith County and Little Miss Ogallala contests, and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull. Activities continue throughout the day with mud volleyball, face painting, bounce houses, a video game trailer, and a free watermelon feed. The 4-H Livestock Sale begins at 2 p.m.

The day caps off with the Combine Derby and lawnmower races, two of the fair’s most anticipated events.

“These lawnmowers are going 40 miles per hour—it’s wild,” Spurgin said. “It might be more dangerous than the Combine Derby.”

Gates open at 6 p.m. for Saturday night’s events, with lawnmower races at 6:30 and the Combine Derby at 7. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for kids ages 6–15, and free for children 5 and under.

Carnival Returns Wednesday–Saturday
The traveling carnival, a key feature for young fairgoers, returns Wednesday through Saturday. Provided by the same operator as the Cheyenne County Fair in Sidney, Spurgin said the goal is to keep the attraction as a yearly staple in Ogallala.

(July 28, 2025) — The Keith County Fair is back this week in Ogallala, bringing a packed schedule of family-friendly entertainment, competitive events, and classic fair traditions to southwest Nebraska.While the parade helped kick off the celebration on Sunday, the fair’s main lineup gets underway Tuesday, July 29, and runs through Saturday, August 2. Wednesday evening is themed as family night and features the third annual Keith County Survivor Games, a free-to-watch competition in the outdoor arena where teams of four tackle events like the tire flip, tank swim, and gate hop.“It’s just a lot of fun, and we have different age divisions so everyone can participate,” said fair board member Makenzie Spurgin. Registration has been extended through Tuesday and is available on the Keith County Fair website and Facebook page.The evening also features the annual BBQ, kicking off the night’s festivities before families move to the arena to cheer on the contestants.Ranch Rodeo, Karaoke, and More – Thursday, July 31

Saturday is jam-packed with events starting early with the Fair Board Breakfast, Little Mr. Keith County and Little Miss Ogallala contests, and the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull. Activities continue throughout the day with mud volleyball, face painting, bounce houses, a video game trailer, and a free watermelon feed. The 4-H Livestock Sale begins at 2 p.m.The day caps off with the Combine Derby and lawnmower races, two of the fair’s most anticipated events.“These lawnmowers are going 40 miles per hour—it’s wild,” Spurgin said. “It might be more dangerous than the Combine Derby.”Gates open at 6 p.m. for Saturday night’s events, with lawnmower races at 6:30 and the Combine Derby at 7. The traveling carnival, a key feature for young fairgoers, returns Wednesday through Saturday. NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 25, 2025) — A local firefighter took top honors at the “You Can Be a Star” talent show Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln County Fair, earning a spot in the statewide Galaxy of Stars competition next month.

Jeremy Condon, a firefighter with the North Platte Fire Department, opened the competition with an original song, accompanying himself on guitar. Moments after his performance, he had to leave the fairgrounds to report for duty — unaware that just two hours later, he would be named the winner.

The show is part of the Galaxy of the Stars program created by Wynne Adams and held annually at county fairs across Nebraska. As the first-place winner, Condon automatically qualifies for the statewide finals at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. The top prize at that competition is a $4,500 recording package in Nashville.

Thedford’s Brayden Hickman, 14, was named first runner-up. Hickman also competed in last year’s local talent show. Second runner-up honors went to Gavon Schurr.

The event drew a crowd of spectators and showcased a range of local talent across all age groups.

Wynne Adams, who hosts and organizes the event, said the show continues to be a platform for young performers and emerging artists to shine on a larger stage.

The Galaxy of Stars State Finals are scheduled for late August at the Nebraska State Fair.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - A fast-moving thunderstorm dumped torrential rain across western Nebraska Wednesday afternoon, triggering flash flooding in parts of Ogallala and North Platte.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, the storm brought between 1.50 and 2.00 inches of rainfall within a single hour, overwhelming storm drains and sending water spilling over streets, sidewalks, and low-lying areas.

In Ogallala, several intersections were temporarily impassable, with water pooling across residential blocks and portions of downtown. Local law enforcement urged drivers to avoid flooded roadways and use caution during the heaviest part of the storm, which struck between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.

In North Platte, flash flooding swamped storm drains and sent small creeks spilling out of their banks. City crews were dispatched to clear debris from blocked drains and monitor flood-prone areas.

No major injuries were reported, but officials said some vehicles were stranded, and a handful of basements experienced minor flooding.

OGALLALA, Neb. — The Ogallala City Council took care of a mix of routine and forward-looking business during a relatively light meeting Tuesday night, according to City Manager Kevin Wilkins.

Wilkins, speaking Wednesday morning on the Sandhills Spotlight on Z 93.5 Country, said the council efficiently moved through a lengthy consent agenda, which included over two dozen contractor license renewals. Most of those were for gas fitters, master and journeyman plumbers, right-of-way contractors, and mobile home license renewals.

“We’re in that season where there are a lot of contractor renewals,” Wilkins said.

The council also approved a new engineering agreement for a flood control project along Highway 30. While a federal grant that initially supported the project—FEMA's Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program—was canceled, Wilkins said the city is continuing engineering work independently.

“We’re keeping momentum going while working with the Nebraska Department of Transportation,” he said, adding that the estimated project cost is around $9 million.

In preparation for next week’s Keith County Fair, the council approved a request to provide picnic tables for the fairgrounds. The parks department will collect tables from city parks and deliver them to a central drop-off point at the fairgrounds.

“Fairgoers will get to enjoy them out there, but just a heads-up—your local park may be without tables next week,” Wilkins noted.

On the public health front, Wilkins encouraged residents to cooperate with city workers conducting lead pipe surveys. Though Ogallala isn’t believed to have many, if any, lead service lines, the city is complying with a required survey by taking random samples.

“We want to make this as smooth as possible for our water department,” he said.

The council also took further steps in its ongoing nuisance property initiative, declaring one property a nuisance and advancing three others to formal abatement. Wilkins emphasized the city’s commitment to cleanup, citing $60,000 spent on nuisance enforcement last year, including the removal of fire-damaged structures.

“If a property owner doesn’t follow through, we will—and then bill the cost. And if it’s not paid, we’ll put it on the property taxes,” he said.

Council members also addressed invasive species, specifically the “tree of heaven,” which has been reported growing along some city walkways. Wilkins warned that the tree, often mistaken for sumac, is fast-spreading and harmful to local vegetation.

“If you think you have one, it’s important to remove it—and you can reach out to the tree board or a local arborist for help,” he said.

Additional reports included a $50,950 grant award for a city project, ongoing planning for a new ambulance barn at the Community Hospital, and a public health alert about tick-borne illness and the risk of West Nile virus during the summer months.

“We’re just trying to keep the community moving forward—and looking good while doing it,” Wilkins said.

OGALLALA, Neb - The Ogallala City Council will convene tonight for its regularly scheduled meeting, with a wide-ranging agenda that includes license renewals, infrastructure planning, nuisance property enforcement, and updates on city projects.

The meeting will begin with roll call and verification of public notice, followed by a vote on the consent agenda, which includes dozens of contractor and business license renewals. These include gas fitters, master and journeyman plumbers, right-of-way and sewer contractors, and a mobile home park license for Hillcrest Park Community, LLC. A final change order for the Ogallala Sewer Improvements 2024-1 project is also part of the bundled items.

In the public forum, representatives from PeopleService Inc. are scheduled to provide an operational update, and the Keith County Agricultural Society will formally request the use of 30 city-owned picnic tables for the 2025 county fair—along with a waiver of associated fees. City staff have proposed simplifying the pickup and return process to reduce wear and damage.

A public hearing is scheduled, although no specific topics were listed in the preliminary agenda.

The Council will also review minutes from its July 8 meeting, followed by several key recommendations from city departments and committees. Among them is a proposed amendment to the letter agreement with engineering firm Olsson related to the Ogallala Flood Reduction Project. The amendment supports further steps toward a federal hazard mitigation grant after a previously sought BRIC grant was canceled.

In nuisance abatement matters, the council will consider declaring one new property at 712 West 2nd Street a public nuisance. They will also vote on abating three previously declared nuisances located on West F, West 3rd, and West 2nd Streets. Meanwhile, 12 other properties that had previously been flagged for nuisance conditions are now up for rescission thanks to corrective action by property owners. Resolutions 2288 through 2299 will formalize those removals.

The Tree Board is scheduled to deliver its quarterly report, and the city attorney and city manager will provide updates, including information on ongoing projects and the process for evaluating the city manager’s performance.

Council members will close out the meeting with individual reports, offering updates on their respective committee assignments, which range from public health and development boards to local nonprofits and regional agencies.

The meeting is open to the public and will take place at City Hall, 411 East 2nd Street in Ogallala.

The amendment supports further steps toward a federal hazard mitigation grant after a previously sought BRIC grant was canceled.In nuisance abatement matters, the council will consider declaring one new property at 712 West 2nd Street a public nuisance. They will also vote on abating three previously declared nuisances located on West F, West 3rd, and West 2nd Streets. Meanwhile, 12 other properties that had previously been flagged for nuisance conditions are now up for rescission thanks to corrective action by property owners. OMAHA, Neb. — Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern are reportedly in preliminary talks to merge, a move that could create the largest railroad in North America and link the East and West coasts under a single rail operator.

A source familiar with the discussions, who was not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed the talks but noted that neither company has commented on the potential deal.

The merger would unite Union Pacific, the largest U.S. freight railroad, with Norfolk Southern, the smallest of the six major rail carriers. While the idea has sparked industry speculation, it also raises questions about whether federal regulators would allow such a deal to proceed.

The Surface Transportation Board (STB), which oversees rail mergers, previously approved Canadian Pacific’s $31 billion acquisition of Kansas City Southern in 2023, forming the CPKC Railway. That deal, however, involved the two smallest Class I railroads and was not subject to the more stringent post-2001 merger rules. Any proposed merger between two larger carriers must demonstrate enhanced competition and a clear public benefit.

Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena has previously touted the potential advantages of consolidation, arguing that it could improve freight efficiency by reducing handoffs between railroads. But critics, including shipping customers and industry groups, worry that fewer rail options could drive up costs and reduce service quality.

Citi Research analyst Ariel Rosa warned that such a large-scale merger would be "costly and time-consuming," potentially tying up executives for years and drawing opposition from regulators, lawmakers, labor unions, rival railroads, and customers.

Union Pacific, headquartered in Omaha, reported $24.3 billion in revenue last year and employs more than 30,000 people. Atlanta-based Norfolk Southern reported $12.1 billion in revenue with a workforce of approximately 20,000.
