North Platte, Neb. - Brave the icy cold water by taking a plunge in this year's 2025 Polar Plunge at Iron Horse Park in North Platte to benefit the Special Olympics Nebraska. The event is Saturday March 8th with registration beginning at 10:00am and the plunge begins at 11:00am. &nbsp;

LINCOLN — A total of $414,706 in awards will go to Nebraska organizations to recruit talent as part of the state’s “Good Life is Calling” campaign.

The Nebraska Department of Economic Development, in announcing winning proposals Thursday, said it launched&nbsp;<a href="https://thegoodlifeiscalling.com/" target="_blank">the campaign</a>&nbsp;in 2021 to promote the state’s quality of life and career opportunities.&nbsp;

Last year, the Legislature approved Gov. Jim Pillen’s funding request to carry out the next phase, designed as a more targeted recruitment of out-of-state talent. Winning proposals, which range from local governments to businesses, are to provide matching funds.

DED Director K.C. Belitz, in a news release, said his agency is excited to partner with organizations statewide on initiatives to “promote the Good Life.”&nbsp;

“Nebraska’s employers are looking to hire, and communities have plenty of career opportunities to offer,” he said.

Friday's weather brings in critical fire weather conditions with the temperatures, wind and low humidity. Wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour is possible. Many local fire departments in the listening area have banned burned permits at this time due to the potential fire hazard conditions.&nbsp;

Columbus, Neb. –&nbsp;Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) will be contracting with Osmose Utility Services to conduct inspections on the distribution, subtransmission, and transmission system across the state.

The inspections will begin in March and last through June. This process will include wood pole inspections as well as ground line excavation, inspection, and rehabilitation treatment. Communities where distribution system inspections will take place include Gordon, Bassett, Scottsbluff, York, Ogallala, Norfolk, and Paxton.

“The inspection program is a proactive approach to finding poles with decay so that they can be replaced or repaired before the poles fail,” says NPPD Senior Project Coordinator Doug Meyers. “These inspections are an important part of our process to maintain our system, and we want customers to be aware of what’s going on as crews begin to head out across the state.”

Crews will be dressed in high-visibility vests and will be traveling from pole to pole in a UTV to conduct inspections. In addition, NPPD line crews will be using helicopters and vehicles to patrol all NPPD transmission lines.

The Hot Sheets: February 28th, 2025

February 27, 2025 (OMAHA, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol were joined by law enforcement officers from all corners of the country in honoring Trooper Kyle McAcy #302, who gave his life in the line of duty on February 17, 2025.

“On behalf of the state of Nebraska, I simply want to say thank you for sharing your hero with the people of our great state,” said Governor Jim Pillen, addressing Trooper McAcy’s family at the funeral service. “I am incredibly proud of him for how he represented our state.”

Trooper McAcy joined the Nebraska State Patrol in 2014 as part of the 56th&nbsp;Basic Recruit Class, graduating on May 1, 2015. He began his career in North Platte, working as a part of the Carrier Enforcement Division. From there, he transferred home to Omaha, continuing his work with commercial vehicle enforcement.

 In 2022, Trooper McAcy joined the Troop A Patrol Division where he worked to keep roadways safe and help those in need across the Omaha metro and surrounding counties. At every stage of his career, Trooper McAcy brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.

“If you didn’t know Kyle, let me give you a little glimpse of Kyle, the trooper. He loved his job. He was an extravert, and he loved people.” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If you tried to keep pace with his hunger for work or conversation, you would finish a tired second place.”

Hundreds of law enforcement officers from around Nebraska and the entire nation attended today’s service, including troopers from more than 20 states.

Trooper McAcy is survived by his parents Teresa and Kevin McAcy; brother Collin (Briana) McAcy; sister Bethany McAcy (Garrett Perry); and fiancé Spencer Ryan. He is preceded in death by both sets of grandparents.

The Nebraska State Patrol will continue Trooper McAcy’s legacy by joining his family in asking, “What would Kyle do?” Trooper McAcy served the state of Nebraska with a passion for service and a love for all who crossed his path. The Nebraska State Patrol wishes to extend gratitude to all who have sent support to his family, friends, and colleagues after this tragic loss.

North Platte Community College Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration student Trey Farmer, of Cozad, was recognized as “Head of the Class” by Rex Kemp, HVAC instructor at NPCC.

Farmer was selected for the honor based on his grades, program participation and class attendance. For his efforts, Farmer received a Malco HVAC kit, as well as Malco caps and tools for himself and his classmates.

Malco is the nation’s leading manufacturer of “tools of the trade” for HVAC/R professionals.

Ogallala, Ne - The Ogallala City Council held their regular meeting last night, amongst the conversation, the council talked about future plans for the reconstruction of Highway 30 through Ogallala.

Ogallala City Manager, Kevin Wilkins said "The State, in order to move forward with a level of confidence to incur costs in the work and in the final design and getting ready to go out for bids; they (State) want some assurances from the local government. We have that agreement to move forward with this project." &nbsp;

Wilkins said the construction and reconstruction of highway 30 would be from one end to the other. The city is looking at a bid in 2026 and highway construction in 2027 or early 2028. &nbsp;

He says the reconstruction of 30 would primarily be around highway 61 and highway 30 junction, with resurfacing being the largest focus on the rest of highway 30 through Ogallala.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.npkubota.com">(LISTEN TO PODCAST sponsored by North Platte Kubota)</a>

The Council also discussed and voted in favor of the "Request for Qualification" for the City of Ogallala Flood Protection for City of Ogallala and Surrounding Areas. Wilkins said, this request had to happen for the City to be able to apply for an EPA Grant that potentially would give the City more funds to work on flood infrastructure when the highway 30 projects begin. The EPA Grant application is due in April of this year.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to Wilkins, "we're looking at early estimates of eight million bucks to fix the drainage issues. &nbsp;We had a meeting with the Department of Roads a week ago and I think there's some synergy that we can gain as they tear up the highway. They've got a certain amount of drainage infrastructure that they need to replace if they tore it up anyway without oversizing it. We may be able to negotiate something where you (Department of Roads) pick up what it would cost to have just replaced it, and we (City of Ogallala) pay for the oversight.&nbsp;

They don't want to build a brand-new road and then two years later we get the money and then we go in and tear it out to put the flood infrastructure in. We're trying to time the two projects to happen at the same time."&nbsp;

The EPA Grant application is due in April of this year.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to Wilkins, "we're looking at early estimates of eight million bucks to fix the drainage issues. &nbsp;We had a meeting with the Department of Roads a week ago and I think there's some synergy that we can gain as they tear up the highway. They've got a certain amount of drainage infrastructure that they need to replace if they tore it up anyway without oversizing it. We may be able to negotiate something where you (Department of Roads) pick up what it would cost to have just replaced it, and we (City of Ogallala) pay for the oversight.&nbsp;They don't want to build a brand-new road and then two years later we get the money and then we go in and tear it out to put the flood infrastructure in. Custer County - Multiple grass fires broke out Monday afternoon in Custer County and two firefighters were injured while enroute to one of the grass fires.&nbsp;

According to Custer County Emergency Management (CCEM), eight fires were reported, however four of the fires merged into two larger incidents with one being extinguished. Four aircraft were called in to help with the fires.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fire crews from all over Custer County and neighboring counties have come together to battle these grass fires. The Custer County fire crews, who have been hard at work all day Monday were given the night off as neighboring fire departments stayed on scene and maintained the fires.&nbsp;

Over 6,000 acres have burned during Monday's grass fires as of Monday evening's report.&nbsp;Several homes are under threat as firefighters contend with challenging conditions created by melting snow and muddy terrain due to the warmer temperatures melting snow from last week's snowstorm.&nbsp;

The CCEM also stated in a post that two firefighters were injured while enroute to Lillian Road fire. The truck the two firefighters were inside rolled into a canyon.&nbsp;One firefighter was transported by Broken Bow Ambulance Service to the hospital. The second firefighter was transported by LifeNet North Platte to a regional trauma facility.&nbsp;

While crews are on scene working the fires, it is to be asked for the public to stay away from the affected area during this time for the safety of the first responders as well as the public. Traffic can cause slow response time and may cause issues.&nbsp;

The North Platte Natural Resources District held its annual Ag Symposium on Wednesday, February 19th, at the Gering Civic Center. During the day, the District awarded Howell Farms this year's conservation award. Howell Farms was nominated because the large farming operation is open to continuous conservation in a wide variety including wildlife, soil health, and water management.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Howell Farms works closely with area agronomists, NRCS, and UNL to implement more conservation, which includes nutrient management, pest management, and irrigation water management. Their farming operation completes conservation crop rotation. They also plant winter wheat as a cover following beans to maintain soil health and prevent erosion. They are very involved in irrigation water management research and work closely with University of Nebraska Extension irrigation water management specialists. Howell Farms is always looking for the next advancement to improve irrigation water management through new techniques. They allow research to be completed on their property, which is used for irrigation publications through UNL.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The North Platte Natural Resources District wants to recognize these individuals for their dedication and contributions to the future of the agricultural industry in the Panhandle of Nebraska.&nbsp;

According to the NWS, the area effects regions north of I-80 and includes fire zones 204, 206, 208 and 209. During the red flag warning, the NWS says expect wind gust from 20-30 mph with wind gust up to 45 mph. With warmer temperatures and winds, fire can spread rapidly.

MPCC Health Occupations Job Fair will be March 10

The North Platte NRD is excited to announce the new Source Water Protection Specialist, Paul Safford. Paul has a Bachelor of Science in Ag Business from the University of Wyoming. He worked at Simplot Grower Solutions for 27 years. He started as an applicator, became a crop advisor and agronomist for 10 years, and was a supervisor for 5 years in the Bayard and Scottsbluff areas.

In this new position, Paul will work with the North Platte NRD, South Platte NRD, and the NRCS offices in those areas. He will be working with landowners and producers to educate and demonstrate the best management practices for groundwater quality and quantity. He will be able to provide technical assistance, inform producers and landowners of upcoming workshops and demonstrations, and assist with financial program information and applications via email, phone calls, or direct mail.
