The Hot Sheets: October 4th, 2024

Scottsbluff, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested three people following a pursuit in Cheyenne County.

This morning, at approximately 1:05 a.m., a trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a silver 2007 Buick Lucerne at the intersection of Old Post Road and Silverberg Drive in Sidney, Nebraska. The vehicle fled the scene, and the Trooper initiated a pursuit. The vehicle proceeded eastbound on I-80 reaching speeds of 130 miles per hour.

During the pursuit, the vehicle utilized the median to turn around and eventually exited I-80 into Sidney. Another trooper deployed stop sticks, but the vehicle continued fleeing. A trooper then successfully performed a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the vehicle to a stop in a ditch near the intersection of L17J and Old Post Road.

Troopers smelled smoke and all three occupants of the Buick exited the vehicle and were taken into custody. Shortly after, the vehicle caught fire. During the fire, troopers heard live ammunition popping inside the vehicle. The fire also spread to the field to the east, north of the Walmart area. The Sidney Police Department and Sidney Fire Department responded, and the fire was extinguished.

All occupants were arrested for drug and weapons charges. The driver, John Harmon, 32, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for flight to avoid (felony) and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony. Passenger Kyrie Riggle, 38, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (meth). The second passenger, Dakota Schrecengost, 22, of Sterling, Colorado, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and had a warrant.

“Movie on the Field” Returns for a Night of Community Fun and Entertainment

North Platte, Neb – Great Plains Health has joined the annual&nbsp; "Mammos for the Masses" campaign this October, organized by the Nebraska Cancer&nbsp; Coalition (NC2), as part of a statewide effort to promote regular breast cancer&nbsp; screenings and early detection. This initiative encourages women across Nebraska to&nbsp; prioritize their health by scheduling mammograms and understanding their personal risk&nbsp; factors.&nbsp;

Dr. Todd E. Hlavaty, who has served as Radiation Oncologist for the Callahan Cancer&nbsp; Center for the last 28 years and serves on the board of directors for the Nebraska&nbsp; Cancer Coalition, emphasized the importance of this initiative:&nbsp;

"Great Plains Health is proud to join the #MammosForTheMasses campaign," Hlavaty&nbsp; said. "Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women, and&nbsp; early detection is crucial. I cannot stress enough how vital it is for women to schedule&nbsp;&nbsp;

regular mammograms and discuss their personal risk factors with their healthcare&nbsp; providers. These screenings can detect cancer at earlier, more treatable stages and&nbsp; ultimately save lives. Don't postpone this important conversation with your doctor. Your&nbsp; health is too important to wait."&nbsp;

Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the&nbsp; U.S. and is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Nebraska. Regular&nbsp; mammograms are proven to reduce breast cancer mortality by nearly 40%, making&nbsp; early detection a critical factor in improving outcomes. While breast cancer is most often&nbsp; found in women aged 55 and older, it's recommended that women start screenings as&nbsp; early as age 40.&nbsp;

Several factors contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer, such as family history,&nbsp; genetic mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2, dense breast tissue, early onset of&nbsp;

menstruation, and late menopause. Women who have received radiation therapy before&nbsp; the age of 30 are also at a higher risk. For women aged 40 to 74, screenings every two&nbsp; years are strongly recommended to ensure early detection and improve outcomes.&nbsp;

"Regular mammograms and awareness of personal risk factors are essential in the fight&nbsp; against breast cancer," said NC2 executive director, Laura Schabloske. "Women are&nbsp; encouraged to consult with their healthcare providers to determine the appropriate age&nbsp; to begin screenings and how frequently to continue them."&nbsp;

Great Plains Health joins #MammosForTheMasses effort to share the message  about breast cancer screening and prevention 

&nbsp; At approximately 1 a.m. this morning, the Sidney Police Department received an agency assist request from the Nebraska State Patrol. 

The State Patrol was involved in a single vehicle pursuit and was requesting the use of a tire deflation device by the Sidney Police Department. 

As the vehicle entered city limits the vehicle lost control and crashed into a field prior to the use of the tire deflation device. The vehicle crash causing a sizable grass fire. 

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Sidney Police Department quickly took three individuals into custody and requested assistance from the Sidney Fire Department to control the fire. 

The Nebraska State Patrol is currently leading the investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Oct. 2, 2024 (Lincoln, Neb.) — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) reminds the public that is it unlawful to place any signs, including political campaign signs, within state highway and interstate right-of-way (ROW). The ROW consists of intersections, medians, entrance and exit ramps, sidewalks, ditches and lands that make up the area bordering each roadway.

NDOT maintenance crews will remove signs that are improperly placed within the state highway right of-way. These signs will be stored for a brief time and sign owners can coordinate with local district offices to reclaim removed signs.

Additional regulations governing political campaign sign placement and size may be set by each county and/or municipality. The public is advised to reference local regulations for questions regarding a specific location and to keep in mind that violation of local sign ordinances may result in a fine.

LINCOLN, Neb. – (October 2, 2024) -&nbsp;Visit Nebraska is excited to announce the stops for the third edition of the Nebraska Holiday Passport. This holiday-themed, miniature-sized version of the popular summer Passport will again showcase some of the best shopping, dining, activities and holiday-ing in the state.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the upcoming holiday season with this special Passport," said Madison Johnson, Passport program coordinator. "Travelers will find so much festive fun at each of this year's destinations, and they're sure to bring home plenty of gifts and treasures from their adventures."

The 2024 Passport will again showcase 20 attractions from across the state, each with a holiday emphasis. Passporters will have from November 15, 2024 through January 7, 2025 to visit the attractions and collect their stamps.

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) encourages residents to get their flu shots and COVID-19 shot updates to protect against respiratory illnesses this winter. SWNPHD has seen an increase of COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks, following the late summer wave of infections seen across most of the country.

Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are caused by viruses that are always changing. This means that as our immune systems fight off one infection, the viruses adapt to avoid being targeted again. When large numbers of people are infected at the same time as happens with flu and COVID, the viruses change more quickly. This is why researchers work to provide updated shots each year, to better protect against the more recent strains of flu and COVID-19 that are going around.

Influenza (flu) is a potentially fatal, contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Flu vaccines make it less likely that you will get the flu; if you do get the flu, it keeps your symptoms from becoming serious, lowering the risk of needing medical care or hospitalization.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most people infected with this virus experience mild illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some people become seriously ill and need medical attention. The COVID vaccines really reduce the risk of developing severe complications, hospitalization, long COVID symptoms, or death.

Everyone ages 6 months and older are recommended to get the updated flu shots and COVID shots.&nbsp;Flu shots are available at local clinics, and COVID shots are at pharmacies and the SWNPHD offices in McCook and Ogallala.&nbsp;For those who have had a COVID shot over the summer, they will need to wait two months after their last dose before getting the 2024-2025 update.

According to the CDC, it is safe and acceptable to receive COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same appointment. These are separate shots and are not combined into one shot. Check with your healthcare provider if you have questions about getting multiple vaccinations at one time.

However, when there is too much cholesterol it can begin to build up on your artery walls. This build up can lead to heart disease which is one of the leading causes of death in southwest Nebraska, along with cancer.

LINCOLN — Two big digital scoreboards that a Nebraska school district purchased with funds from a student nutrition fund and installed in a school gym were not an appropriate spend, a Nebraska Department of Education spokesman said Monday.

Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley last week issued a scathing letter to the Chase County public school district in southwest Nebraska, calling out its use of about $125,000 from a nonprofit school food account for the pair of “massive video scoreboards.”

The school district, in response, said that it was confident that it “appropriately and transparently” bought the video display boards after consulting with the Nebraska Department of Education.

A law firm representing the district told Foley’s audit team in a letter that while the boards are used for sports, they also display nutritional information. The firm said the district has a longstanding practice in which students line up on the walking track of the gym, where the boards communicate nutrition information to students on their way to the cafeteria.

The law firm added, however, that the district was ready to take corrective action if directed to do so by either the State Department of Education or the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Monday, spokesman David Jespersen, in response to a query by the Nebraska Examiner, said the State Department of Education will require the Chase County school district to provide quotes on three display monitors and notify the department of its choice. The department must approve.&nbsp;

“And the school nutrition program fund will be paid back less the approved amount based on the cost of the approved menu display,” Jespersen said in a statement.

“The original expense does not meet funding requirements for approval,” he said.

State maintenance forces will be performing a mill and hot mix overlay from reference post 12.15 to reference post 12.95, one mile south of Trenton. The work is anticipated to take 12 days. Traffic will be maintained with an automatic flagger assistance device and a pilot car and flaggers.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up, and put phones down.

Work Underway on N-25, South of Sutherland

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that John Hernandez, a/k/a “Hboy,” age 36, last of Lincoln, Nebraska, but formerly of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced September 26, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln for distribution of 5 grams or more of actual methamphetamine. United States District Judge Susan M. Bazis sentenced Hernandez to a total of 145 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Hernandez’s release from prison, he will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

Beginning in 2021, the FBI and CODE Drug Task Force opened an investigation into drug trafficking in the North Platte, Nebraska area. In March of 2022, law enforcement set up a controlled buy over Facebook with a third party. In the course of the buy, Hernandez was observed approaching the buy location. He was also heard on the recorded audio associated with the buy. Through surveillance and debriefings, law enforcement learned that Hernandez was the source of the meth that was sold during the controlled buy.

Law enforcement knew Hernandez to be a major source of both meth and fentanyl in the North Platte area. Law enforcement had taken reports from other drug users, concerned about Hernandez selling drugs, particularly fentanyl to young people.

In February of 2023, law enforcement responded to Hernandez’s residence and observed an 11-year-old who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. In April of 2023, they recovered a Colorado runaway who had been staying at Hernandez’s house and reported using fentanyl there. The runaway was also in possession of paraphernalia frequently used to ingest fentanyl.

Hernandez’s house was the subject of a search warrant executed in May of 2023. During the execution of that warrant, Hernandez gave a&nbsp;Mirandized&nbsp;statement to officers, advising them that he was working to gather funds and planned to travel to Julesburg, Colorado to re-up his drug supply. He stated he planned on purchasing four ounces of meth and at least 100 fentanyl pills.

After being arrested in this case in Lincoln, Hernandez again gave a&nbsp;Mirandized&nbsp;statement to law enforcement. He identified himself as being the biggest meth dealer in North Platte. In talking about his various sources, Hernandez advised that he had purchased and sold at least 100 ounces of meth and approximately 2400 fentanyl pills while dealing in North Platte.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Bazis noted that Hernandez had a lengthy criminal history, which included domestic assault convictions. She surmised that Hernandez, when using drugs, is a violent and dangerous person. She also noted that investigation revealed multiple children were living in the home with Hernandez while he was dealing drugs, and he exposed them to hazardous, if not outright lethal, substances, concluding that “you have got to protect kids.”

This case was investigated by the CODE Task Force which is made up of law enforcement agencies throughout a 22-county area in west-central/southwest Nebraska and includes the North Platte Police Department, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Office, Frontier County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The Lincoln Police Department’s Safe Streets Taskforce also assisted in the arrest of Hernandez.

Former North Platte Man Sentenced for Methamphetamine Distribution

KEARNEY – Peyton Neff is an unquestioned leader for the University of Nebraska at Kearney volleyball team.

One of the most experienced players on this year’s roster, the North Platte native has learned to embrace her role as a team captain.

“Being a setter, I feel like that leadership aspect is important, no matter what age you are,” Neff said. “That’s something that Maddie helped me recognize early on.”

Maddie Squiers is an assistant coach for the third-ranked Lopers, someone who’s built a trusting relationship with Neff over the past three years and played a key part in her development.

“Whenever coach (Rick) Squiers really wants something out of Peyton, he kind of goes through me,” Squiers said of her father, who’s led the UNK volleyball program since 1999. “He gives me a lot of feedback to give to Peyton. And Peyton feels comfortable coming to me with questions.”

A three-time all-conference performer and two-time all-state selection, Neff was a do-it-all player for North Platte, finishing her high school career with more than 2,200 assists, 700 digs, 400 kills and 100 aces.

The 2018 North Platte Telegraph Player of the Year committed to UNK in fall 2020, following in the footsteps of multiple family members. Her mother, Pam (Sis) Jorgensen, played basketball for the Lopers and her father, P.D., was on the baseball team. Neff’s aunt, Tam (Sis) Kuenle, was an all-conference volleyball player for Kearney State College who still ranks in the top 10 in program history in solo blocks, total blocks and sets played.

That family connection is really cool – “There’s a picture of my mom in the Health and Sports Center with her crazy hairdo from back in the day,” Neff said with a laugh – but it’s not the main reason why she chose UNK.

“I liked that it was close to home and it was such a successful program,” she explained. “I knew that I was coming to a program that wanted to win.”

However, that success comes with increased pressure.

Neff admits she was “very scared” when she arrived on campus as a freshman. Fortunately, there was someone here to calm those nerves.

Squiers played club volleyball with Neff’s older sister, Alex, before starting her college career at Bellevue University, where she was a two-time NAIA All-American.

She transferred to UNK in 2018 and redshirted that year, then joined the starting rotation in 2019, when the Lopers put together one of the best seasons in program history. They went 38-1 and reached the NCAA Division II national championship match for just the second time.

When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 season, Squiers received another year of eligibility, allowing her to come back as a sixth-year senior in 2021.

“That whole year was just really unique,” she said. “We still joke about it. The freshmen who came in during my sixth year, they were in seventh grade when I was a senior in high school. So it was a really interesting dynamic having teammates who were so much younger than me.”

The odd situation ended up being a major benefit for Neff, who learned from the veteran setter during her redshirt year.

“It was really valuable to have somebody ahead of me who was super experienced, knew volleyball so well and was so dedicated to the program,” Neff said.

“Even playing on the other side during practice, it was frustrating, but also fun to get to play against her,” she added with a smile.

The Lopers went 26-7 that season and qualified for the Division II national tournament for the 22nd straight year. Squiers led the team with 1,338 assists and a program-record 53 aces while playing in all 115 sets. She was named a Division II All-American and All-MIAA First Team selection for the second time.

“I knew my last year that Peyton was going to be the setter after me, so I really felt like I had the mindset of taking her under my wing, teaching her and giving her feedback,” said Squiers, who continues to provide this mentorship as an assistant coach.

When Squiers transitioned from the court to the bench, that wasn’t the only change she wanted to see.

She encouraged Neff to develop her own identity and do things her way.

“You have to have your own style, your own leadership style, your own way of running things,” Squiers said. “And it’s been really cool to see that evolve. She’s grown so much from her freshman year to where she is now.”

The Lopers are 69-12 since Neff became the starting setter in 2022, including a perfect 12-0 record to start this season. She’s played in all but three sets during that time, earning All-MIAA First Team honors in both 2022 and 2023. Neff was also selected as a Division II All-American and First Team All-Region performer last year.

She’s been equally successful in the classroom, receiving the MIAA Excellence Award for a perfect 4.0 GPA the past three years. Neff graduated summa cum laude in May with a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/psychology/index.php">bachelor’s degree in psychology</a>&nbsp;and she’s currently enrolled in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.unk.edu/academics/csp/school_psychology.php">school psychology graduate program</a>.

The MIAA Setter of the Week twice this season, she ranks ninth in program history with 3,114 career assists – one spot ahead of Squiers. But that’s not a stat either of them cares about.

Like any good leader, they’re both focused team goals: a conference championship and 25th consecutive trip to the national tournament.

“Looking back at the last few years, we’ve made it to the conference championship but didn’t win, so I would really like to make it to the championship again and win this year,” Neff said. “There were so many championships before I got here, so it’d be cool to be able to win one.”

She’s grown so much from her freshman year to where she is now.”The Lopers are 69-12 since Neff became the starting setter in 2022, including a perfect 12-0 record to start this season. She’s played in all but three sets during that time, earning All-MIAA First Team honors in both 2022 and 2023. Neff was also selected as a Division II All-American and First Team All-Region performer last year.She’s been equally successful in the classroom, receiving the MIAA Excellence Award for a perfect 4.0 GPA the past three years. But that’s not a stat either of them cares about.Like any good leader, they’re both focused team goals: a conference championship and 25th consecutive trip to the national tournament.“Looking back at the last few years, we’ve made it to the conference championship but didn’t win, so I would really like to make it to the championship again and win this year,” Neff said. “There were so many championships before I got here, so it’d be cool to be able to win one.”<figure>

City of North Platte and Municipal Light says beware of utility scam

United States Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Nikki Guerra, age 46, of North Platte, Nebraska, was sentenced on September 26, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska for one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Guerra to a total of 31 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After Guerra’s release from prison, she will begin a 5-year term of supervised release.

On October 15, 2023, officers with the North Platte Police Department stopped a vehicle owned by Guerra as it entered North Platte for at traffic violation. From prior intel, officers suspected the vehicle had been involved in the distribution of narcotics and suspected narcotics were currently in the vehicle at the time of the stop.

Both Guerra and the driver were asked to step back to patrol cars while officers checked their identification, and a drug dog was deployed while the traffic stop was in progress. The dog alerted to the presence of narcotics and officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. In a XL men’s sized jacket pocket, officers located a pound of meth. The jacket was located on the floor of the passenger’s side seat where Guerra was sitting at the time of the stop.

The recovered meth was sent to the state crime lab where it was tested and confirmed to meth, with a purity of 95.7% for a total of 400 grams actual meth.

In sentencing Ms. Guerra, Judge Gerrard complimented the work she had done since being arrested to address her substance abuse issues.&nbsp;

This case was investigated by the North Platte Police Department.

The National Weather Service in North Platte (NWS) has expanded the Red Warning Effect to Southwest Nebraska and parts of North Central Nebraska. Much of the listening area has been affect&nbsp;since late last week. The effect expires this evening at 8:00pm (MT)/9:00pm (CT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The NWS states any fire started can quickly spread with a wind gust and can be difficult to control. Temperatures for the coverage area range anywhere from the 60s to the near 80s. Winds will be strongest in Western Sandhills and Northern Nebraska. Check your local area to see if a fire ban is in effect before making any types of controlled fires.&nbsp;
