Spring and summer are shaping up to be busy seasons for the Ogallala YMCA, with new programs, events and facility improvements underway, according to Executive Director Melissa Ewert and CEO Conrad Bostron.
One of the first upcoming events is the YMCA’s triathlon, scheduled for May 2. Organizers say participation numbers will determine whether the event moves forward, as it requires a significant number of volunteers and staff to operate. As of now, registration remains low, and a final decision is expected by the end of the week. The event would include an indoor swim at the YMCA, a bike route to Roscoe and back, and a run along East 4th Street. A 5K is also planned for the same day.
In addition to the triathlon, the YMCA is preparing for its summer swim lesson season. Registration will open soon and run through late April, with multiple scheduling options available to accommodate families. Staff emphasize the importance of water safety, especially during the busy summer months when children are more likely to be around pools and lakes.
The organization is also expanding its role in the community through a new after-school program in partnership with Ogallala Public Schools. Registration for the program recently opened to help determine staffing needs and overall interest. The program will serve students from preschool through fifth grade and will run from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. on regular school days. While the service will be free during the school year, separate programming is being planned for non-school days and breaks.
Bostron says the YMCA is modeling the program after a successful version already operating in another Nebraska community, with expectations that it will bring similar benefits to Ogallala families.
Facility improvements are also in progress as the YMCA prepares for increased summer use. Work is underway on locker room updates, wellness center touch-ups and outdoor pool enhancements, including new seating and shade features at the Oasis. Membership at the facility has grown significantly over the past year, and new equipment has been added to meet demand.
Community events continue to expand as well. A new Mother-Son Dance is scheduled for May 1 at the YMCA, with tickets going on sale soon and limited availability. Organizers say the event is part of an effort to offer more inclusive programming for families. Plans are also already in place for the annual Daddy-Daughter Dance later this summer.
YMCA leaders say they are encouraged by strong community support and are focused on continuing to grow programs that bring new opportunities and activities to the Ogallala area.
