Mid-Plains Community College’s Ogallala Campus is gearing up for a busy spring, offering a mix of hands-on learning, creative classes, and opportunities for students to plan ahead.
Ogallala Campus Administrator Jeni Soper says the college is already looking toward the future while wrapping up spring activities.
“We’re talking about spring and we are also talking about fall here at the college. We have opened registration and we’re registering students for fall already,” Soper said.
One of the key upcoming events is a “Make Your Schedule” day designed for high school students interested in early entry classes. The event will take place May 22 from 3 to 6 p.m. and will feature advisors on-site to help students register for summer and fall courses.
“Walk-ins are welcome… if anybody’s interested in signing up for either summer or fall classes, that’s a great time to come out. We’ll have lots of people here to visit with,” Soper said.
The campus is also celebrating student achievement with an open house highlighting a recently completed tiny home project. Three Paxton High School students built the home in just 12 weeks as part of the Ready to Work Building Construction program.
The project will benefit the community, as the home is being donated to Lincoln County Connection to house an unhoused veteran.
“They’ve really got to experience the building process from start to finish,” Soper said, noting students gained hands-on experience in flooring, electrical, plumbing, and more.
For those looking to get creative, the Ogallala Campus will host a Spring Wreath Class with instructor Tammy Higgins on April 8. The class teaches participants how to create a decorative mesh wreath and build skills they can use year-round.
“It is a pretty intricate process, but once you kind of learn that process, you can take those skills home and make a seasonal wreath… for any season that you want,” Soper said.
Participants are encouraged to preregister to ensure enough materials are available.
Additionally, MPCC has announced a schedule change for its “Getting Retirement Right” class with instructor Mark Mayfield. Originally planned for March 25, the class has been rescheduled to April 8 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Soper says the campus remains committed to serving the community through accessible programming and support.
“If you’re ever interested in anything at all, give us a call. Stop out. We are always here to help the community,” she said.
