A severe thunderstorm recently swept through the area, producing 50–70 mph winds. There is still storm debris—including fallen limbs—in many areas. Crews are hard at work cleaning up, but visitors should remain cautious.

All four docks at Lake McConaughy were pulled on May 15 due to sustained high winds and forecasts. Docks will remain out any time gusts are expected to exceed 30–40 mph for safety. Keep an eye on the weather before heading out, and be prepared for sudden changes.

Don’t forget—Saturday, May 17 is Free Park Entry Day in Nebraska. No park entry permit is required at any state park. Fishing is also free, although all other regulations still apply. It’s a perfect time to explore the great outdoors without breaking the bank.

KEITH COUNTY, Neb. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the start of a new sign-up period for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and Nebraska Game and Parks is jumping in with a suite of incentives aimed at encouraging landowners to enroll.

The general and continuous CRP sign-up began Monday and will run through June 6. Biologist Addie Piernicky with Nebraska Game and Parks says this year’s sign-up is especially important for boosting habitat in key areas across the state.

“We’ve been waiting for this year,” Piernicky said in an interview. “We have a bunch of incentives through the Nebraska Game and Park Commission, especially in areas we’ve identified as critical pheasant habitat.”

CRP is a voluntary program that compensates agricultural producers for removing environmentally sensitive land from production and planting species that improve environmental health. Nebraska Game and Parks is working to sweeten the deal for landowners, offering targeted incentive payments in counties like Keith, Perkins, and across Southwest Nebraska.

“If you enroll in CRP and agree to five years of public access through the Open Fields and Waters program, you could qualify for a $75 per-acre signing incentive payment through our pheasant plan,” Piernicky said.

The incentives aren’t limited to public access participants. Game and Parks offers additional support for seeding and land preparation, even for those not participating in access programs.

“We have incentives just to say thank you for enrolling in CRP,” Piernicky added.

The state’s conservation push also includes the Nebraska Community Access Partnership program, which provides a one-time bonus for landowners opening their CRP or rangeland to walk-in public access. Eligible landowners in Keith, Garden,&nbsp;Deuel, and Arthur counties can receive up to $100 per acre in total bonuses, depending on land type and location.

“We tell people, ‘farm the best and conserve the rest,’” Piernicky said. “We know where those acres are that just aren’t producing for you. With CRP, you can make them work for wildlife and for your bottom line.”

Game and Parks also offers technical assistance. A team of biologists, including Madison Fell and new farm bill biologist Hayley in Sidney, are available to help landowners navigate the programs.

A notable new CRP practice gaining traction is the “prairie strips” initiative, which allows producers to convert marginal areas like pivot corners into diverse plantings of grasses and wildflowers. These strips are not only habitat-friendly but also producer-friendly: they’re driveable during harvest and can qualify for up to a 20% increase in annual CRP payments.

With high sand content in many soils across Nebraska, Piernicky said the prairie strips program has resulted in a significant boost in payments for participants.

“People are really seeing a bump in what they’re earning annually,” she said.

Water conditions remain favorable heading into mid-May. The current water level at Lake McConaughy sits at 3,239.2 feet elevation, equating to 1,069,200 acre-feet, or roughly 61.3% of the reservoir’s total capacity.&nbsp;

Shower houses are now in service at several major recreation areas, including Cedar View, Arthur Bay, and Lake Ogallala. Additional facilities at Lone Eagle, Little Thunder, and Martin Bay are expected to open soon, pending water quality test results.&nbsp;

All fish cleaning stations around the lake are open for use, and docks have been installed at multiple ramps including Diver’s Bay, Martin Bay (low water), Lemoyne, Cedar View, and both north and south ramps at Lake Ogallala.&nbsp;

Lake Mac Report for Weekend of April 25th, 2025

OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — April 24, 2025 — The Ogallala Goodall YMCA is preparing for a busy summer, with swim lessons, youth programs, a global peace event, and an urgent call for lifeguards to help staff its large community pool.

Melissa Ewert with the YMCA told the Post that swim lessons will begin in May and continue through June. Levels five and six will run May 19-30. Levels one through four are scheduled for June 16–27. Additionally, classes for toddlers and infants, including preschool-level instruction, are set for the week of June 16.

In addition to aquatic activities, the YMCA is also gearing up to host a special event on Friday centered around a newly installed Peace Pole — a monument inscribed with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages. The pole, an international symbol of peace, was installed by the Ogallala Rotary Club and placed in a public space to promote unity and understanding.

“There’s people from all over the world that are going to be there, which is pretty cool,” said Ewert. A ceremony celebrating the installation is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday.

Ewert also emphasized the need for lifeguards this summer, citing the size and activity level of the YMCA pool. “It takes eight guards during the day and another seven at night on a busy day,” she said, noting the organization is flexible with students’ schedules and eager to provide young people with their first job experience.

In addition, the YMCA has brought back its “Rugrats” program, a weekly activity for children ages 2 to 5. Held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., the program is designed to keep toddlers active for 30 to 40 minutes through fun, engaging activities — with the added hope that they’ll be ready for a nap afterward.

The first race is expected to start around 9:30 a.m., according to Rally Director Bob Collins, a longtime organizer who’s been with the Wild West Soap Box Derby for more than 25 years.

“We’ll try to get all the cars weighed in, get everybody registered, and get their wheels checked — they can’t run their own wheels, they run ours,” Collins said. “Then we’ll get the cars scaled and the first race hopefully around 9:30. It should be a pretty full day.”

The theme is superhero's so runners are encouraged to wear their best superhero costume. &nbsp;

Ogallala, Ne - The next 100+ Women Who Care Keith County will meet this Monday, April 14 at Front Street Steakhouse. Every quarter women from Keith County meet and bring $100 with them that they will eventually donate that evening to a local organization. The meeting begins at 6pm sharp (Mountain Time). This quarter the women will be hearing from "Teammates", "Outy Obsession" and "The Ogallala Tree Board"

After each of these organizations presents, the women in the room will vote on who will recieve that quarters financial donation of $100 from each woman/business in attendance. Of course that's $10,000 or more. Since its inception in 2020, the group has donated $202,225 locally.

OGALLALA, Neb. &nbsp;— The Ogallala City Council held its regular bi-monthly meeting Tuesday evening, recognizing longtime city employees, proclaiming National Library Week, April 6–12. Mayor Steven Krajewski recognized&nbsp;Jason Curtis &amp; Tracy Hood&nbsp;for 25 years of service to the City of Ogallala in the Street Department.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The city is also preparing for the city’s first-ever drone show this Fourth of July weekend.&nbsp;

In light of anticipated fire restrictions this summer, the city has opted to replace its traditional Fourth of July fireworks display with a drone show. City Administrator Kevin Wilkins said there is an estimated 95% chance a fire ban will be in place by early July, based on consultations with local fire officials.&nbsp;

“We needed to make a decision,” Wilkins said. “We’re also about $7,000 short in fundraising for a fireworks show, and the council is prepared to underwrite that if needed.”&nbsp;

Instead, the city has contracted Fantasy Drone Shows of Norfolk for a performance on Saturday, July 5. The company is scheduled to perform a show in Colorado the night before and will return through Ogallala, reducing the cost of the typically $80,000 production to $25,000. The show will take place near the Soap Box Derby Track and the Western Diamond Baseball/Softball Complex.&nbsp;

In other business, the council reviewed a funding request from the Keith County Area Housing Development Corporation regarding the former Ogallala Middle School building, and Auditorium. Vacant for several years, the property is slated for redevelopment into a 44-unit apartment complex through an adaptive reuse project.&nbsp;

The corporation is seeking $460,000 in Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act (LB840) funds to address environmental issues, including asbestos, and to begin demolition work. Wilkins said once the building is abated and cleared, it will be transferred to a private developer for construction.&nbsp;

“We’re hoping to start demolition by late summer and move toward acquisition by midwinter,” Wilkins said, adding that the projected construction timeline is about 12 months.&nbsp;

The city and housing development corporation are also pursuing historic district designation for the site as part of the revitalization effort.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department is back again for its annual Free Will donation Spaghetti Dinner at the Hershey School Cafeteria. The event takes place from 11 am to 2 pm with all-you-can-eat spaghetti with meat sauce, Homemade buns, and deserts with a free-will donation.

Perkins County hosting Rock Concert at 2025 Fair with Eve 6

Ogallala, Ne - The Ogallala City Council held their regular March meeting on Tuesday (March 25). The Council approved adding Jeffrey Lampmann to the Ogallala Tree Board. It's a two-year term.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Council had a discussion with the public on the speed limit heading west on highway 30 towards the sale barn. City Manager Kevin Wilkins said "we had a citizen address the speed limits on Highway 30 as it goes towards the sale barn. I think they made a credible case for the State of Nebraska to examine the speed zone changes as it migrates out towards the intersection of Highway 30 and the bypass." The speed limit increases to 50mph right before the sale barn. "We will ask the State to take a look at that" Wilkins said.&nbsp;

Action items heard by the council included an amendment to the agreement for consulting services with the Airport Improvement Program Project. Wilkens said this was just housekeeping to approve a 3rd party FAA requirement for payment to an engineering firm who already had worked on the Searle Field master layout plan. The council approved the item.&nbsp;

Also, the council talked about amending section 31.07 of the Municipal Code Regulating Historic Preservation Commision. "We amended a section of the municipal code related to the historic preservation commission a year ago," according to Wilkins. "I was trying to streamline the commission, so I took out some language the State preferred; in addition, we're adding some additional language that allows for historic overlays." He said, "you have a historic structure that may be zoned residential or commercial. You could put an overlay over that zoning designation for historic purposes. What that does is set you up for some additional tax credits or funding." Wilkins told the POST, "right now the primary intent of this is a proposed project at the Ogallala Middle School for 44 units of mixed to low-income housing there." Wilkins says "this helps facilitate moving that project forward. It gives that project additional points for the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority application. It could potentially get that area a Historic Preservation tax credit." Wilkens went on to say, "we're anticipating doing a historic overlay on that particular block where the Middle school sits and then incorporating the auditorium into that." The Council passed the motion.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Council also approved the installation of two automated license plate readers in Ogallala. One permanent reader on the viaduct and a mobile license plate reader. The readers can scan a license plate and automatically relay plates that are in the system for BOLO or Amber Alerts to law enforcement officials in the city and county. This is a statewide system already in place in other cities around Nebraska including North Platte and Kearney.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - People's Health in North Platte is back again to education young adults with their focus this time around on high school students with the annual Wild Night. This event is taking place Friday at Wild Bills from 4:00pm - 6:00pm.

Students have the opportunity to attend the event and earn a passport card and attend all the different agencies to learn. The event is geared around health. After students complete their passport, they will get a card and that card can get them free laser tag, bowling and pizza. Their will be raffles and giveaways. Students are asked to bring their HS ID with them

Ogallala, Ne - The Ogallala Regional Arts Council is hosting another concert this Sunday, this time at the new Willow &amp; Oak Event Center at 801 Diamond Springs Trail on the north side of Ogallala. According to ORAC's Barb Jeffries, three members of the Council drove to Red Cloud a year ago to see The Wildwoods and said "they fell in love with their music". Jeffries and Elisha McBride joined Derek Beck on Thursday's Sandhills Spotlight on Z93.5 Country to talk about the show.

The Wildwoods have become a force in the folk scene, boasting accolades like being finalists at the FreshGrass Music Festival Band competition and Gems on VHS "Gems in the Rough" competition in 2023. Their songwriting prowess is underscored by semi-final placements in the International Songwriting competition, with tracks like "Untitled" and "Way of Train." Recognized consistently at the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards, they were crowned "Best Band" by the Lincoln Journal Star’s Lincoln Choice Awards in 2022.

The doors will open for the concert at 3:00pm Mountain time, at Willow and Oak. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.The Ogallala Regional Arts Council is able to bring entertainment to the area with the support of the Nebraska Arts Council, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and through the sale of tickets and&nbsp;memberships. Now a new Nebraska Agriculture Acadamy has entered the picture over the last few years. It started with former public school teachers Breann Zimmer, and Ann Dvorak in 2022 and they ave since been joined by Katie Shadbolt who are all Nebraska Certified Agriculture Educators. The three teamed up to create an online agriculture education academy for homeschool students.

Zimmer, who joined Derek Beck this week on Sandhills Spotlight on Z 93.5 Country says, "The Nebraska Agriculture Academy provides hybrid education to students grades 7-12. Our goal is to make it possible for homeschool students across Nebraska to participate in FFA and learn about agriculture."

<p>North Platte, Ne - March is National Agriculture Month, and Eagle Media is spotlighting businesses and organizations giving back to agriculure this month. For years, homeschool students either had to take a minimum number of classes at public schools to participate in Future Farmers of America, or missed out entirely. The spring semester is here and People's Health is once again making their way over to NPCC for this semester STD and Tacos. The event is for college students only and runs from 11:00am - 1:00pm in the NPCC Health Building room #25. 

Students can get tested for STD's, learn educational facts about sexual activity and more. West Central District Health Department will be on location to provide vaccines.
