Kearney, Neb. - The University of Nebraska at Kearney sports communication majors received news that the group has been nominated in three categories for this year's IBS awards in New York City. &nbsp;

Amongst the students is North Platte native Kade Mohr who has been nominated for the second year and this year is a finalist with seniors Jon Willis and Ethan McCormick for "Best Sports Talk Show". All sporting events and talk show aired on 91.1 KLPR the student run radio station during the 2024 year. This marks another year where UNK students have been nominated for the IBS awards in New York City.&nbsp;

The holiday season is underway, and the Mid-Plains United Way reminds listeners that the giving tree is at FNBO at the downtown location. The tree started off with around 45 gift ideas but around 15 remain. Also, the united way will be at this year's Ladies Night Out on December 19th.&nbsp;

North Platte, Neb. - The Salvation Army is gearing up for the next few weeks as the group heads into their busy time of the month with Christmas quickly approaching. The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to ring at different locations throughout North Platte and if you have time this week, it is supposed to be a very nice week to get out and ring. Last week was the Thanksgiving box distribution for families who signed up and this year the group doubled the number of boxes compared to last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We were able to give out almost 300 boxes of food. Each food box had a turkey, and it was like a full bird turkey, they had stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, you know, some cranberries, whatever, whatever you can really think of that would go on. You would see on the Thanksgiving table.  We were able to help out almost 300 families this year," said Camon Landry. "I think last year we were around 160,170ish. So yeah, pretty close to doubling what we were able to do last year."&nbsp;

North Platte, Ne - The Lincoln, Logan, McPherson County Extension Office recently announced the formation of a "First Lego Robotics League". According to Extension Educator Caitlyn Jacobson, the league programs and codes robots to go through obsicle courses. Jacobson said "theres a team of young people that programs and codes a robot to go through an obstacle course. Every year the state has a competition in Lincoln along with competitions around the state; but there's a different obstacle every year and you just kinda work towards as a team figuring out how to program your robot to successfully go through this obstacle course."

Nick Newland, a local 12 year old recently signed up for the team joined Jacobson in the Eagle Media Studio to talk about the new program, Nick says, "I really like doing Legos and my mom told me about 4-H and that they have a robotics class and I was really excited because I'm really into coding and doing robotics and Legos and she told me that was for Legos too, and I was really excited when she said she could sign up."

Many think 4H is all about arts, crafts and animals, but according to Jacobson, "our main wheel-house is about finding out what our youth are interested in and how we can essentially get them to where we want them to go, and to grow in a positive way and be able to thrive in today's world. You know there's a whole lot of jobs in that realm that haven't even been invented yet and this is a great way for you to get their toes in and be prepared when they step out post high school when they leave and they go to college or whatever they're gonna do post high school. Then they have that experience a little little bit already so they're just that much more prepared to take whatever life throws at them. A lot of people pointed out that technology is incorporated into any job that you were going into and that's really kind of where our focus is,&nbsp; just looking at the big picture and seeing how we can help prepare our youth for right now that will help them in their future".&nbsp;

Over 30 drop off locations throughout North Platte for those who wish to donate a toy. Toys need to be unopened when donating. The GOC will be collecting toys until December 7th. The 2024 North Platte Elks Hoop Shoot is back on December 8th at Adams Middle School. The event is for boys and girls ages 8-13 and students will shoot 25 free throws. Students who win each division will move the ranks to compete for a chance to go to Chicago for the finals. The girls shoot at 1:00pm and boys shoot at 2:00pm. The event is free for those who want to participate.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NE – December 12, 2024 – The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing for over three months. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

A string of drawings without a jackpot winner has grown the estimated Mega Millions jackpot to its highest level since September. There have been 26 consecutive drawings since September 13 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Friday, December 13 drawing to $670 million or $317.8 million with the cash option selected. This is the 8th largest jackpot in the history of the game.

Record Mega Millions® Jackpot to Win on Friday the 13th

KEARNEY, NEB. – Delegates representing farm and ranch families from all 93 Nebraska counties outlined key agricultural policy priorities and elected new leaders for Nebraska Farm Bureau (NEFB) as part of the organization’s 107th Annual Meeting and Convention held Dec. 8-10 in Kearney. Delegates discussed a broad spectrum of agricultural policy issues to provide direction for the organization.

The demand for energy is increasing at an unprecedented rate. The agricultural sector in Nebraska serves as both a current and potential energy resource. While delegates adopted policy to support updating the electrical transmission infrastructure, they opposed the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Interest Electric Corridors (NIETC). Biofuels, especially ethanol, have played a crucial role in reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources for transportation and will continue to do so in the future. Delegates adopted policy to support the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Nebraska.

“As the demand for renewable fuels increases, producers have the opportunity to access new markets, which will enhance the resilience and profitability of the agricultural economy while fostering a sustainable future for generations. We advocate for the use of domestically grown products in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel. However, it is essential to avoid imposing specific conservation practices as a requirement for feedstocks to qualify for SAF production,” said Mark McHargue, NEFB President.

Nebraska Farm Bureau has long been a supporter of beginning and young farmers and ranchers. Delegates advanced national policy to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Meeting and Convention in January aimed at making U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans more accessible.

“Today’s beginning and young farmers and ranchers face challenges including access to land, capital, affordable housing, and federal programs. To secure the future of agriculture, we must empower the next generation of farmers and ranchers with the resources they need to succeed. By making USDA loans more accessible and flexible, we open doors for beginning farmers and ranchers to start and grow their operations, ensuring a sustainable agricultural industry for years to come,” said McHargue.

Delegates also reaffirmed their support for Nebraska’s livestock industry, consumer choice, and proper food labeling surrounding the discussion of lab-produced protein, which involves the production of protein products from animal cells grown in a laboratory setting.

“Our delegates reiterated how vitally important Nebraska’s livestock industry is to our state’s agricultural complex, and voted to ensure no state tax dollars should be used to purchase or research lab produced protein for human consumption. At the same time, they overwhelmingly voted to ensure consumers have the opportunity to choose what they are feeding themselves and their families. Nebraska Farm Bureau also firmly believes in the importance of clear and accurate labeling for lab-produced protein products,” said McHargue

The lack of rural veterinarians, particularly those focused on large animal care, has been an ongoing concern for farmers and ranchers in Nebraska. NEFB has supported efforts to encourage large animal veterinarians to locate to underserved areas in Nebraska. Delegates this year adopted policy to support the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian program. The program is a scholarship program for Nebraska students aimed at increasing the number of new veterinarians practicing in production animal practices in rural Nebraska

“Our representatives addressed various concerns that significantly impact the lives of farmers, ranchers, and all residents of Nebraska. Their effective leadership is essential for advancing agriculture and ensuring the overall prosperity of our state,” said McHargue.

In addition to setting state and making national policy recommendations, delegates also held elections for positions on the Nebraska Farm Bureau board of directors.

Katie Olson, a Holt County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the First Vice President of the organization. Olson and her husband, James, have a cow/calf operation and grow irrigated corn and soybeans near Atkinson.

Matt Jedlicka, a Colfax County Farm Bureau member, was re-elected to serve as the Central Region representative. Jedlicka and his wife, Sharee, partner with his family to grow row crops and operate a cattle feed yard near Schuyler.

Jim Stewart, a Lancaster County Farm Bureau member, was elected to serve as the Southeast Region representative. Stewart farms and has a cash grain operation near Lincoln.

Nebraska Farm Bureau Members Set Policy on Key Issues and Elect Leaders at Annual Meeting and Convention

KEARNEY, NEB. – Grant Jones was named recipient of the 2024 Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&amp;R) Achievement in Agriculture Award. The award was announced Dec. 10 at the Member Appreciation luncheon during Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 107th&nbsp;Annual Meeting and Convention in Kearney.

Jones is a Chase County Farm Bureau member and was selected based on performance in farm or ranch management, setting and achieving goals, overcoming obstacles, and service to his community and Farm Bureau.

As the fourth generation on his family’s operation, Jones always knew he belonged on the ranch. After graduating in 2014 from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln with his bachelor’s degree in animal science, Jones returned home to find his place on the operation. Jones, alongside his parents, owns and operates Chundy Land and Cattle and Chundy Aquaculture.

From cows to row crops to shrimp, Jones saw immense opportunity in diversification. Today, Chundy Land and Cattle encompasses a registered SimAngus seedstock herd, a backgrounding lot, custom grazing, hay, and a row crop operation. Chundy Aquaculture is a direct-to-consumer shrimp farm.

Jones serves as the Southwest Region YF&amp;R committee member and is an active Chase County Farm Bureau board member. Jones serves on NEFB’s State Legislative Policy Committee (SLPC). Outside of his extensive Farm Bureau involvement, Jones serves on the Nebraska Angus Board and the zoning board in Chase County.

Farm Bureau members ages 18 to 35 can apply for the Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement in Agriculture Award. As the Nebraska winner, Jones will receive $500 and an all-expense paid trip to the 2025 American Farm Bureau Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas in January to compete with other state winners at the national level.

Grant Jones of Chase County Named Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Achievement Award Winner

Imperial, Neb. - The Imperial Police Department is searching for a suspicious individual who was reported entering a garage on Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to a post made to social media, the Imperial Police Department (IPD), were notified and responded to a report of a suspicious individual on Tuesday. While investigating the incident, IPD says that a male subject entered an open garage and trespassed.&nbsp;

A local neighbor spotted the Indvidual and scared him off the scene. The IPD states the suspect has been identified as Ryan Powell and charges will be pursued. Powell is wanted for questioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This incident is a reminder to citizens that it's importance of being aware of your surroundings and locking doors to vehicles, houses, sheds, etc. IPD says while the suspects intentions are unclear, the community's involvement was crucial in identifying him.&nbsp;

Community members are encouraged to report any signs of Powell or his vehicle. The vehicle looks to be an SUV potential a 2nd generation Chevrolet Equinox (2010-2017) and appears to be a light color.

KEARNEY, NEB. -- Ten farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness professionals from across Nebraska have been selected for Nebraska Farm Bureau’s (NEFB) 2025 Leadership Academy.&nbsp;They will begin a year-long program starting in January.

“The goal of Leadership Academy is to equip the future leaders of Farm Bureau with the tools they need to successfully advocate for agriculture, connect with members, and embody the grassroots mission. The opportunities to serve in leadership roles in Farm Bureau and our state are vast and Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to develop the skills needed to step into those roles&nbsp;and push Farm Bureau and their communities forward,” said Audrey Schipporeit, NEFB’s director of generational engagement and facilitator of the 2025 Leadership Academy.

Academy members will participate in sessions&nbsp;<a>focused on leadership development, understanding the county, state, and national structure of Farm Bureau and its grassroots network, policy work on agricultural issues, and the importance of agricultural literacy. The group will also travel to the Capitols in Lincoln and Washington, D.C. to visit with elected officials and agenc</a>y representatives.

“We are eager to work with this group of diverse individuals and are excited to support their passion, ambition, and commitment to agriculture. We cannot wait to see the rippling impact they will have on their communities, state, and world. Congratulations to the NEFB Leadership Academy Class of 2025,” said Schipporeit.

Kris Rut is the president of Arthur County Farm Bureau and resides near Arthur, Neb., where she ranches alongside her husband, Tom. Together, they have four children. In addition to her work on the ranch, Kris is the agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor at Arthur County Schools. Kris was named Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation’s FFA Advisor of the Year in 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hannah Pearson is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau. She grew up on a commercial cow-calf operation and was actively involved in showing Hereford cattle at the state and national level. She attended Texas Tech University and competed on the meat and livestock judging teams. Hannah returned home to Nebraska and works at Custer County Feeders while working to establish her own cattle herd.&nbsp;

Chad Nienhueser is a member of Adams/Webster County Farm Bureau. He grew up on his family’s farm near Kenesaw and attended Central Community College in Hastings. Chad currently holds the position of president of the Adams/Webster County Board. Chad is married and has two children, ages 12 and 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lisa Bousquet is a member of Dakota County Farm Bureau. Lisa and her family farm in rural Dakota County where they have a diversified livestock and crop operation. She manages the Dakota/Thurston County Fair and is involved in many community organizations, including Dakota County 4-H where she serves as a leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Teagan Thode is a member of Keith County Farm Bureau and is a lifelong resident of Ogallala. Teagan is a sales agronomist and has been actively involved in agriculture his entire life. He began his journey with the Collegiate Farm Bureau and is eager to expand his engagement through the Leadership Academy.&nbsp;

Bruce Williams, a member of Saunders County Farm Bureau, grew up on a Saunders County crop and livestock farm. After college, he worked as a Territory Manager for John Deere for 14 years across Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. He married Amy, completed his MBA, and began part-time farming before fully transitioning back to Northern Saunders County. Together with Amy and their four children, they raise corn, seed soybeans, alfalfa, and chickens.

Matt Eggleston is a member of Custer County Farm Bureau and grew up on a small farming/ranching operation. After returning home, Matt focused on revitalizing the pastureland through managed grazing practices. He has been a member of the Custer County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for two years and currently serves as president. Matt and his wife have four children and enjoy life in a small town.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Halie Groth is a member of Buffalo County Farm Bureau and resides in Kearney. She was raised on a farming and feedlot operation in Boone County and attended the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Leadership. Halie works as a Crop Protection Territory Manager for Corteva Agriscience and enjoys spending her free time with her family and watching Husker volleyball.&nbsp;

Joni Titus is a member of Cherry County Farm Bureau. She is the fifth generation on her family’s ranch where they raise black Angus cattle. Joni holds an MBA and works as a supervisor for Intuit (QuickBooks). She is involved in her community, serving as chair for the local youth wrestling club. Joni looks forward to better understanding the agriculture industry and growing as a leader through the Leadership Academy program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nick Birdsley is a member of Douglas County Farm Bureau and is an Agriculture Educator at Ralston High School. A graduate from the Urban Ag Academy, his passion for teaching urban youth about where their food comes from and preparing them for careers within the ag industry is apparent. Nick has served in other programs focused on advocacy and education including the&nbsp;Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council and the Nebraska Children's and Families Foundation. He continuously advocates to his students the importance of leadership and&nbsp; serviceship&nbsp;in their community.&nbsp;

PUEBLO, Colo. – Chadron State men's basketball rode a dominant first half and withstood a furious second-half rally to earn a 66-62 road win over the 7-1 CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves in Pueblo Thursday night. 

The Eagles (5-5, 2-1 RMAC) built up a 16-point halftime lead and stayed ahead the entire second half, although the ThunderWolves cut the lead to a basket on two separate occasions and missed a potential game-tying jumper with 10 seconds left. 

Senior guard Zy Wright scored an NCAA career-high 24 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6 of 12 from the field and a perfect 10 of 10 from the line, including the final two free throws to ice the game with seven seconds to play. 

Julio Phipps scored 17 points while Jalen Thomas had 10 points plus four steals for the Eagles, who committed just six turnovers over the game's 40 minutes. The Eagles shot 36 percent from the field and 90 percent from the line (18-20). 

Wright scored 11 of the team's first 17 points, including going 6-for-6 at the free throw line and hitting a deep three on a broken play as the shot clock wound down. 

Moments later, Julio Phipps recorded back-to-back layups off of steals, one of his own and another steal by Zach Smith, leading Pueblo to call timeout with CSC up 21-16. 

That was only the start of a 16-2 run to make it 33-18, with four more points apiece coming from Wright and Thomas during that scoring run.

During the Eagles' first half, they forced 10 CSU Pueblo turnovers while committing just one, had seven steals while Pueblo had zero and shot 42 percent from the floor compared to the hosts 27.6 percent while leading the ThunderWolves 38-22 at halftime.

CSU Pueblo began the second half on a 7-0 run before Treyson Neff put the Eagles on the board with a jumper. Pueblo hit a three, but the Eagles responded immediately with a three of their own from Wright and a transition pull-up jumper from Jalen Thomas to go back up by 13 at 45-32. 

The ThunderWolves continued to chip away at the lead, however, as Chadron State went without a field goal for over five minutes of game time. CSUP guard Brevin Walter went on a personal 5-0 run with two free throws and a transition three to cut Chadron State's lead to two points at 62-60, but the Eagles found Julio Phipps for a dunk at the other end. 

Rebounds loomed large down the stretch. When CSC missed a jumper with 44 seconds left, an offensive board by Phipps extended the play and allowed the Eagles to run more clock. Pueblo had a chance to tie with under 10 seconds left, but Walter's jump shot rattled off the rim and Zy Wright out-leaped post players to pull in the rebound and calmly hit two free throws to give the Eagles a four-point lead and see out the game. 

After defeating CSU Pueblo, who entered ranked No. 5 in the D2CSC regional rankings, the Eagles will move on to facing UCCS (5-4, 1-2 RMAC), who are ranked No. 10 in the same rankings. The Mountain Lions lost 95-89 in overtime to Black Hills State Thursday.

Wright leads Eagles to road win over regionally-ranked CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – Led by 23 points from All-American Alisha Little, CSU Pueblo led for the final 33 minutes of game time and defeated Chadron State women's basketball 72-61 at Massari Arena in Thursday night RMAC hoops. 

Kylie Krise finished with 11 points and seven rebounds to lead Chadron State in both categories. Kyra Tanabe finished with nine points as she and Krise each hit three three-pointers apiece for the Eagles. 

The Eagles shot 29.9 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three. They continued to shoot well at the free-throw line, making 11 of 12 attempts for a percentage of 91.7. 

CSU Pueblo, which had two other scorers in double figures with Landri Hudson's 13 and Tomia Johnson's 11, shot 36.8 percent from the floor, 26.9 percent from three and 74 percent from the line. 

Chadron State competed on the boards, outrebounding CSU Pueblo 52-36 and grabbing 21 offensive rebounds as a team. Behind Krise's seven, the Eagles got six rebounds apiece from Camren Morris and Ashayla Powers, who played just 14 minutes and scored four points before fouling out. 

The Eagles also enjoyed a return to the court from Liberty Line, who made 23 starts for Chadron State last season but had been out all year due to injury prior to Thursday's game. Line played 11 minutes and finished with five points on 2-for-6 shooting and five rebounds.

Chadron struck first on a three by Camren Morris, who scored seven of CSC's first nine points as the visitors built an early 9-8 lead in the first four minutes of game time. The two teams continued to battle throughout the period as the scoring margin was never more than three points in either direction during the opening quarter. 

In the second period, Pueblo began to take control by feeding Little and forcing turnovers. The Eagles committed 22 turnovers in the game, 14 of which came in the first half. CSU Pueblo outscored Chadron State 19-10 in the second period on its way to a 39-27 lead at halftime.

The Eagles came out with urgency in the second half, beginning on an 8-2 run featuring back-to-back three-pointers by Krise. The ThunderWolves responded immediately, however, reeling off a 12-1 run over five minutes of game time before CSC snapped the streak with a backdoor cut feed from McKenzi Petersen to Liberty Line for a layup.

CSU Pueblo closed the third period with another 10-3 run, including three made three-pointers in four attempts, to lead 63-43 after three quarters. The Eagles did outscore CSU Pueblo 18-9 over the final period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

The Eagles are 2-7 overall and 1-2 in RMAC play. They will take the court next against UCCS (4-4, 2-1 RMAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m. UCCS fell to Black Hills State 72-44 on Thursday.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Danny Woodhead officially became the first Chadron State player inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame with his inclusion in the 2024 class at the National Football Foundation (NFF) Awards Dinner on December 10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.&nbsp;

Woodhead, a two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner with the Eagles in 2006 and 2007, was part of a group of 19 former college football players and three coaches to join the Hall of Fame ranks.&nbsp;

"I don't see it as myself going in the Hall," Woodhead said. "I feel like there's 100 other dudes coming in with me. My lineman, my receivers, the defense that got us the ball back. None of the 8,000 yards is possible without good teammates and good coaches around you. I'm blessed to represent Chadron."&nbsp;

The North Platte, Nebraska native ended his career as college football's all-time leading rusher across all divisions and to this day holds the career rushing record for Division II. In four years in a Chadron State College uniform, Woodhead racked up 7,962 career rushing yards and 9,480 all-purpose yards while adding 109 career touchdowns, including a streak of 38 straight games scoring a TD.

"I always wanted to be as good as I could be," Woodhead said. "I had a lot of confidence in my abilities, but it was never about thinking 'this week, I hope I get five touchdowns.' I never thought that way. I wanted to be the best player I could be to help the team succeed."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chadron State went 35-11 during Woodhead's career as an Eagle, a tally that included back-to-back RMAC Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007.&nbsp;

"I wanted to win a national championship," Woodhead said. "That didn't end up happening, but we still had two of the best teams in Chadron State history."&nbsp;

Woodhead is in plenty of exclusive company with his induction. According to the College Football Hall of Fame, less than two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of the individuals who have played or coached college football have earned Hall of Fame induction.

A former National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete during his playing career, Woodhead is now one of only 44 NFF Scholar-Athlete recipients to go on to be inducted into the NFF Hall of Fame. Woodhead credited his parents for establishing his academic and overall work ethic.&nbsp;

"My dad was a teacher, and I was homeschooled kindergarten through eighth grade, so my mom was a teacher, too," Woodhead said. "They obviously instilled in me that getting good grades and doing the right thing was important."

While Woodhead's induction Tuesday focused solely on his collegiate achievements, he went on to have a successful 10-year career in the NFL, proving the ability of Division II players to compete at the next level.&nbsp;

"I would recommend the Division II experience all day," Woodhead said.

Woodhead played with the Jets, Patriots, Chargers and Ravens, accumulating 2,238 NFL rushing yards and 2,698 NFL receiving yards, including a touchdown reception from Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLVI in 2012.

Previously, Woodhead was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Chadron State College Hall of Fame in 2023.

Lincoln&nbsp;- Freshman Britt Prince pumped in a game-high 19 points to lead No. 24 Nebraska to a low-scoring 63-50 women's basketball win over Tarleton State on Wednesday evening at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.&nbsp;

The Huskers improved to 9-1 despite struggling through their worst shooting performance of the season, hitting just 17-of-57 field goal attempts (.298). Nebraska entered the game as the Big Ten's best team in both field goal and three-point field goal percentage while ranking among the top 10 teams in the nation. The Big Red extended its home winning streak to 11 games while improving to 8-0 at PBA on the year.

Nebraska did manage to knock down 7-of-22 three-pointers (.318), including three by Prince, who added five rebounds, two assists and a steal on the night.

Fellow freshman Amiah Hargrove was the most efficient Husker on the night, going 5-of-6 from the field including a three-pointer on her way to a career-high 13 points. Hargrove also contributed three rebounds and a steal.

Senior Alexis Markowski put three Huskers in double figures with 15 points and six rebounds. The All-America candidate scored 10 points in the first half to reach 1,500 in her career, becoming just the fourth Nebraska player in history to achieve the combined career totals of 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds, joining first-team All-Americans Karen Jennings, Kelsey Griffin and Jordan Hooper.&nbsp;

While those three Huskers combined for 47 points, the rest of the Big Red managed just 16 total points. But Nebraska's defense made the total stand by forcing 21 Tarleton State turnovers and holding the Texans to 38.5 percent shooting (20-52). The Huskers also won the rebounding battle, 38-36, including a 14-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Tarleton State, which fell to 5-6, was committed to making everything difficult for Nebraska, committing 23 fouls compared to 10 for the Huskers on the night. The Big Red cashed in by outscoring the Texans 22-2 at the free throw line.

The teams were tied at 13 after a low-scoring first quarter, but Nebraska built a 33-26 lead at halftime. The Huskers took control with a 13-2 surge midway through the third quarter to claim a 48-30 lead after a Kendall Moriarty free throw with 2:13 left. Hargrove scored seven straight points during the burst.

Tarleton State refused to give up, cutting the margin to 49-35 at the end of the third, before holding Nebraska without a field goal for nearly the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. The Texans trimmed the lead to 50-44, before Hargrove, Markowski, Moriarty and Callin Hake combined on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach at 58-44 with 2:53 left.

Karyn Sanford led Tarleton State with a career-high 14 points, including four three-pointers, while grabbing four rebounds. Faith Acker added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Nebraska finishes its five-game home stand by playing host to Chattanooga on Sunday, Dec. 15, at Noon (CT). Tickets are available now at Huskers.com. Husker Defense shows grit in Win over Texans

Kearney, Neb. –&nbsp;The Nebraska Kearney volleyball team has placed four players on the 2024&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.avca.org/award/2024-avca-division-ii-womens-all-america-teams/">American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American</a>&nbsp;team and one on the&nbsp;Division II Commissioners Association (D2 CCA) All-American&nbsp;squad.

A panel of head coaches from around the country select the AVCA team with the D2CCA chosen by College Sports Communications (CSC). For both, a player must first make their respective all-region team.

UNK's four AVCA selections tie the program record (2004) for the most in one season. They are setter&nbsp;Peyton Neff&nbsp;(first team), middle&nbsp;Mia Berg&nbsp;(third team), libero&nbsp;Alli Wiese&nbsp;(third team) and outside hitter&nbsp;Asha Regier&nbsp;(honorable mention). Wiese is now a three-time AVCA All-American (2022 and 2023 h.m.) with Neff a two-timer (2023 h.m.). These are the first honors for both Berg and Regier.

Next, Wiese becomes the 11th Loper to earn CCA (previously Daktronics) All-American honors and the first in five years. This is her first time making the squad. Finally, since&nbsp;Rick Squiers&nbsp;took over the program in 1999, UNK has had 29 different players earn a total of 43 All-American honors.

Neff finished her third year as a starter averaging 12.4 assists, 2.5 digs, 0.7 blocks, and 0.5 kills per set while serving up 17 aces. One of three Lopers that appeared in all 112 sets, she guided an offense that averaged 14.6 kps and hit .258. Finally, Neff (North Platte) was one of five Lopers with at least 10 solo blocks and one of six with a double-digit ace total.

In her lone year in Kearney, Wiese (Mattawan, Mich.) averaged 5.5 digs per set with a team-best 34 aces, 92 assists and a .970 serve receive percentage. Playing in all 112 sets, her dig average is the second highest 29 years, and she completes a five-year career with 2,887 digs and 227 aces.

Next, Berg was UNK's top scorer (398.0 points) as she ranked second on the team in kills (3.1 per set) and first in blocks (1.2 per set). Hitting .318, she played in 104 sets and managed team-bests in both solo (26) and assisted (94) blocks. Offensively, Berg (Eureka, Mo.) was one of three Lopers to reach 300 kills.

That trio included Regier (Newton, Kan.) who led UNK in both kills (354) and kps (3.4). She finished the year strong once again, reaching at least 10 kills in the final 11 matches. That included a career-high 20 in the NCAA Tournament loss to Washburn. Also supplying 44 blocks, 87 digs, 12 assists and two aces, the multi-year starter ends a four-year career with 916 kills.

UNK (30-3) won the 2024 MIAA regular season title, was MIAA tourney runners up for a third straight season and made the NCAA's for a 25th consecutive fall.

North Platte native Peyton Neff Honored As All-American

Norfolk, Neb.- The NSAA Board of Directors have voted 5-3 in favor of Hastings hosting the softball state tournament with the state championship games being held at UNL Bowlin Stadium through 2026. The state championship games have been played the past two years at Connie Claussen Field located at the UNO campus. 

Championship games were moved to a different venue so the games can be televised on Nebraska Public Media.

Atlanta, GA - The State of Nebraska had two legends inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night in Atlanta, Georgia. Former Husker Football coach Frank Solich, and North Platte native Danny Woodhead.

Solich led the Huskers to the 2002 BCS National Championship game. Solich served as an assistant at Nebraska from 1979-97, coaching the running backs, before becoming the head coach. As an assistant to Hall of Fame coach Tom Osborne, Solich was part of the coaching staff on three national championship teams (1994, 1995, 1997), and he recruited and coached Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Mike Rozier .Solich is the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history with 115 overall wins, Solich led the Bobcats to four MAC East titles (2006, 2009, 2011, 2016), and his 77 conference wins rank second only behind College Football Hall of Fame coach Herb Deromedi, who posted 90 victories during his career at Central Michigan. The Cleveland, Ohio, product became the first inductee ever from Ohio and the seventh coach from Nebraska to enter the Hall.

Woodhead, a North Platte High legend, finished his career at Chadron State as college football's all-time leading rusher before a near 10 year run in the NFL including a super bowl appearance with the New England Patriots..

Woodhead is Chadron State's first-ever College Football Hall of Fame inductee.

 He was A three-time First Team All-American (2004, 2006-07), Woodhead twice claimed the Harlon Hill Trophy as the most valuable player in Division II (2006, 2007). A four-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) First Team selection, he was the RMAC Offensive Player of the Year three times after being selected as the RMAC Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2004. He was named the most valuable player for Chadron State all four years in college, and he was also named the All-Century Offensive Player by the RMAC.

 Woodhead finished his Chadron State career as college football's all-time rushing leader with 7,962 yards, and he owned 21 NCAA Division II records when he graduated. The records included most consecutive games rushing 100 or more yards (16), games rushing 200 or more yards (19), most consecutive games scoring a touchdown (38) and most yards rushing in a season (2,756 in 2006).

Woodhead currently is the co-CEO of Arise Venture, a business consulting firm in Nebraska. A scratch golfer, Woodhead made a run at becoming a professional golfer, falling just short of qualifying for the U.S. Open. He was inducted into the Chadron State College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger testified Wednesday that more than 700 threats against members of Congress were made during the last month alone, with at least 50 cases of people making false 911 calls in an attempt to get police teams to respond to lawmakers’ homes, often called “swatting.”

Manger, who took over the police department following the Jan. 6 attack, said the agency has done a relatively good job bolstering security at the Capitol building during the last few years, but needs more officers and money to address lawmakers’ security when they are back home or at offsite events.

Manger pointed to the dignitary protection division, which is responsible for keeping congressional leadership safe wherever they go, as “woefully understaffed.”

“We provide the protection at the level it needs to be. But you do that through officers working double shifts and averaging … 50 hours of overtime every pay period,” Manger said.

The division that protects leadership currently holds about 250 officers, but Manger pressed for that to be doubled to at least 500.
